SHIPS DAVIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,318, dated December 23, 1890.
Application filed May 13, 1h89. Serial No. 310,523. (No modeh) To all whom t may concern.-
.Be it known that I, JAMES A. HAEGAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chester,Delawarecounty,Pennsylvania,have invented certain Improvements in Ships Davits, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the construction of davits to be applied to the side of a vessel for launching the small boats.
The main object of my invention is to construct mechanism by which the boat can be swung from its blocks to a position at the side of the vessel and lowered evenly into the watcr by simply turning the cranks and operatingclntching mechanism,as fully described hereinafter. i
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal View of my improved davit with the boat in.position, showing a portion of the deck and rail of the vessel. Fig. 2 is an end view of the device with the vessel in section. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view on the line l 2, Fig. 2. Fig. 4t is a detached view of the lower portion ofthe davit-crane.V Fig. 5 is a longitudinal view of a modified form of the device. Referring to Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, AA are the daVit-cranes pivoted at a ,to the frames B, secured in any suitable manner to the deck of the vessel. The cranes are in the present instance straight bars; but they may be of different shapes, as circumstances require. To the lower arm of each crane is secured a segmental rack A', having teeth a', which engage with a pinion c on a sleeve C, loose on a shaft D. The sleeve C is provided with a disk c', having on its rear side a series of slots c2, as shown in Fig. l, and in the bearing is a slot b. The sleeve can be fixed to the bearing by simply placing` apin b in one or the other of the slots c2 and in the slots b in the frame, when it is required to lower the boat, or, in place of the slots, orifices may be made in the disk c and apininserted therein and into an oriiice in thebearingB, as shown in Fig. 3. bearing B to the other, and has bearings therein, and is provided at each outer end with a gear-wheel D which meshes with a The shaft D extends from one.

On the side of the gear-wheel D ou the shaft D is a band-wheel s, to which is applied a friction-band s', connected to a foot-lever S, on depressing which the band will be tightened upon the wheel, thus placing sufficient friction on the shaft D to hold it in any position required.
At each end of the shaft D is a clutch E, constructed as shown in Fig. 3, having two clutch portions e e', the shanks of which are threaded, and adapted to these threaded Shanks is a sleeve ehaving a suitable wheel e3, by which it is turned. This sleeve c2 is confined longitudinally to the shaft by a collar 6*; but the shaft and collar eL are free to turn in the sleeve e2. By turning the sleeve e2 in one direction by hand the clutch-face e will be thrown into gear with the clutch-face of -the sleeve C, thereby imparting movement to the pinion c and davit-craneA; but if the clutchsleeve is reversed the clutch-face e will be moved away from the clutch-face of the sleeve C, and the clutch-sleeve e will be thrown into gear with a clutch-face f on a drum F, around which is passed the rope or chain oc, forming part of the hoisting mechanism by which the boat is lowered into the water or raised therefrom, so that it will be seen that by turning the crank-handles d and moving the clutches into gear with one or other of the clutch-faces the davit-cranes will be moved or the hoisting-tackle will be operated. Each rope or chain is attached at one end to a cleat a," on the vessel, and passes through pulley-blocks y y', each pulley-block y being attached to the upper portion of each crane A, and the lower pulley-block is provided with a hook y2, which is passed through a ring on the boat.
rlhe shaft D is supported by intermediate bearings di, and by duplicating the operating mechanism two or more persons can operate the davit, or the davit can be operated at either end, as circumstances require. The
davit-cranes are connected together at their upper ends by spans a2, and have guys a3 at each end, passing to points on the vessel.
As shown in Fig. 2, the davit mechanism is IOO so constructed that two boats can be placed side by side on the vessel and the davit swung so as to remove either of the boats without disturbing the other.
To remove the boats from the vesseldsay, for instance, the boat l l', Fig. 2-the davit is swung to the dotted line u', and the hoistingtackle is then attached Ato the rings on the boat and the boat is lifted so as to clear the boat lV when it swings. When it is lifted to this position, the clutch is thrown in, so that on turning the handles d the cranes will swi ng to the position shown by the dotted line Il", Fig. i, which would be sufficient for the boat to clear the side of the vessel, the clutch being then reversed and the boat lowered into the water. The same is the case when lowering the boat XV, except that in this case the hinged portions n. of the cradle U are let down, and the boat can be swung out toa position clear of the vessel without first lifting the same.
In Figs. 5, (3, and 7, instead of having the mechanism for turning the shaft I) at each end, I place this mechanism in the middle, and secure to the shaft a worm-wheel D, which lneshes with a worm D" on a sha-ft D5. This shaft is provided with a handle di", which is supported at its outer end by a standard di, both handle and standard being portable. The handle is of sufficient length to allow two or more men to turn the crank. The segment on the davit-crane in this instance is shorter than that shown in the former figures, and only swings from the vertical position to the position shown by the dotted line a".
In Figs. 5, G, and 7 I have shown the mechanism simply adapted for turning the crane, thehoistiug-rope being operated by ind ependent mechanism, although it will be understood that the rope can be wound around the drum on the shaft, and the mechanism described with reference to Fi gs. l and i can be utilized in this connection.
The segment may be made, as shown in Fig. S, above the pivot a of the crane.
I claim as my inventionl. The combination of the swinging crane of a davit, a clutch-disk geared to said crane, the boat hoisting and lowering mechanism, a clutch-disk connected thereto, a shaft, a
clutch thereon adapted to engage with either the clutch-disk of the daVit-crane or the clutch-disk of t-he boat hoistingand lowering mechanism, substantially as specified.
2. rlhe combination of the opposite frame B B, the davit-cra-nes A A, pivoted thereto, each having a segment-gear at its lower end, with a shaft D, having its bearings in both frames, pinions c c, meshing with the segmentgears, with a crane-shaft geared to said shaft I), whereby the davit-cranes can be moved, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of the frame l, a davitcrane A, pivoted thereto, carrying a segmentgear at its lower end, a shaft D, a pinion c, meshing with the segment-gear, a gear-wheel on said shaft, a crank-shaft, and a pinion b, mounted thereon, substantially as described.
l. The combination of the driven shaft having thereon a clutch, with a drum adapted to engage with said clutch, and around winch passes the rope or chain of the hoisting meehanism, a sleeve on said shaft adapted to engage with the clutch, a pinion on said sleeve gearing with a segmental rack on the davltcranes, Vhe clutch being so arranged that 011 moving it in one direction the davit-cranes will be thrown into gear and on moving it 1n the opposite direction thedrum will be thrown into gear, substantially as decribed.
5. The combination of the shaft, a hoistingdrum loose thereon, a loose sleeve carrying a pinion, said hoisting-drum being connected to the mechanism for raising the boat, and the pinion geared to the segmental rack on the davit-cranes, with clutch-faces on the drum and pinion, with clutch portions e c on the clutch proper, having screw-threads on their Shanks, and a screw-threaded sleeve engagin g with said screw-threaded shank, so that on turning said sleeve one or other ot the clutch-faces will be thrown into gear with either the pinion, sleeve, or drum, substantially as specified.
