FOUNTAIN-BRUSH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,120, dated July 20, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANDREW J AOKSON FRENCH, of Kittery, of the county of York and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fountain-Brushes; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, of an article containing my invention, the nature of which is defined in the claims hereinafter presented.

In the drawings, A denotes a long tubular handle or case, open at one end and terminating at the other in a duplex conical mouthpiece, B, formed of two tubular conic frustums, a b, arranged as shown. The said case is slotted, as represented at c, and within it, just above the slot, is an annular shoulder, d. The said case is provided with a stopper, B, which fits into the case at its month, has a slot, (2, in one side of it, and extends nearly to the said shoulder (1.

Within the case is a brush, G, having a long rod or shank, D, projecting from it, and provided with a fing'enrest, E, adapted to extend through the slots of the case and its stopper to a short distance beyond such.

Fitting closely upon the shank D, and arranged concentrically therewith, are two disks, F G, of india-rubber or other suitable yielding or elastic material. The lesser disk, F, has a diameter larger than that of the brushhead g, and is held in close contiguity therewith by a pin, h, which goes diametrically through the shank. The larger disk, G, is faced on its opposite sides by two metallic disks, i It, which are connected by rivets Z, going through them and the elastic disk. The disk G thus re-enforced fits closely to the bore of the case, and when in place therein is held against the annular shoulder thereof by the stopper B.

Suppose the case, or that part thereof between its mouth and the disk G, to be supplied with a liquid-as mucilage, for instance- I can, by holding the case upright and drawing the brush down within it, charge such brush with the liquid. Having done this I am next to force the brush forward, so as to cause it to project out of the mouth of the case until the lesser disk may be carried into contact with and estop the said mouth in a mannerto prevent the liquid from escaping through such, on the brush-case being inverted or turned upside down, to enable the brush to be used in applying its liquid contents to a letterenvelope or other article.

The larger or re-enforced disk serves to prevent leakage of the fluid from the case when the brush is either in or out of it and such disk is in place within the case. The move ment of the brush, either into or out from the case, is to be effected by the hand of a person applied to the rest or part E.

The upper tubular 'frustum, a, serves not only to interrupt any superfluous mucilage that may escape from the brush when it may be in a vertical position and out of and above the case, but to convey such surplus back into the case, and thereby prevent such mucilage from running down upon the outer surface of the case.

When the brush is within the case the mouth of the latter may be estopped by a cork or stopper introduced therein.

What I claim as my invention is as follows, v12:

1. The combination of a case, A, provided with a duplex conical mouth-piece, B, as explained, with a brush, 0, its shank D, and an elastic disk, F, all arranged and to operate substantially as explained.

2. The combination of the conical-mouthed and slotted and shouldered case and its slotted stopper, as described, with the brush and its shank and the two elastic disks applied thereto, all being arranged, constructed, and to operate essentially as specified and represented.
