This invention relates to a package and display device and more particularly to such an article adapted to contain a mop or other article of analogous non-rigid character.

A primary object of this invention is the provision of a package for mops or the like which will permit the display and support of such articles in an advantageous manner and which will be of the utmost simplicity in construction, readily lending itself to manufacture andassembly.

Applicant is aware that in the past various methods of packaging and displaying mops have been devised. The instant invention, however, comprises an improvement over the prior art in providing a display package which, while retaining all the advantages of such prior art, may be constructed with a minimum of material and labor, and which, by virtue of its externally' disposed position may be assembled with respect to its contents in a minimum of time and with a minimum of operations.

Other objects will in part be obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.

The invention accordingly consists in the combinations of elements, arrangements of parts and features of construction, all as will be more fully pointed out hereinafter and shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a top plan view of one form of package illustrative of this inventive concept, in association with a mop;

Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the device of Figure l, certain parts thereof being broken away and certain others being shown in dotted lines;

Figure 3 is a perspective view of one portion of the package prior to assembly with a mop;

Figure 4 is a plan View of the blank from which the device of Flgure 3 is formed;

Figure-5 Yis a top plan view of a modified form of package containing a different type of mop;

Figure 6 is a side elevational view of the device of Figure 5, certain portions thereof being broken away, and certain other parts being shown in dotted lines;

Having reference now particularly to Figures 1 and 2, there is generally indicated at 2li a mop headcomposed of a top plate 2l in substantially the shape of an equilateraltriangle, having a raised ridge 22 thereon, to which is secured as by means of a suitable pivot pin 23 a handle socket 24. Handle socket 24 is split and provided with depending opposed ears 25 throughV suitable registering apertures, in which is passed a screw 26 onto which, exteriorly of ears 25, is fitted a Wing nut 21. Thus a handle (not-shown) may be fitted into socket 24 and held in place by tightening nut 2l. 1

Plate 2l is provided with' a depending peripheral flange (not shown) to which is secured as by means of rivetsy 28, or other suitable fastening means, a band 29 of cloth or analogous material, comprising a double folded portion, stitched as at 30, between the folds of which are secured the strands 3l of the mop. (The mop perse is known to the art and disclosed more fully in Patents Numbers 1,609,295 and 1,916,213, both owned by applicants assignee.)

Other types of mops, such as an open-headed type, having no top plate but utilizing a heartshaped, or triangular metal band, to which the strands may be secured,`may of course be utilized in conjunction with the instant invention.

Having reference nowv to Figures 3 and 4, the package for mop head 20 is shown in detail. In Figure 4 there is generally indicated at 35 a blank from which the mop supporting portion of the package is formed. Blank 35, which may be stamped out or otherwise formed from 'a sheet ofany suitable material, such as cardboard, is

it should be noted, is of materially greater strength than would be a unilateral or flat sup- When the blank of Figure 4 is folded into the position shown in Figure 3, it will be noted that portion 36a overlies portion 36h, or vice versa, substantially the entire length of the adjacent side of mop head 20.

These portions may be securely fastened in related assembly in any desired manner, as by strips 42 of gummed paper or analogous material, or suitable staples (not shown) may be utilized if desired.

It may here be pointed out that package portion 35 is so dimensioned with respect to a mop of any given size, that the upper edge of strip 36 engages the outside lower edge of folded band 29 of mop head 28 (see Figure 2) to form a seat or support therefor, whereby the mop, once positioned, is secured against relative vertical disassembly with respect to the package.

In assembling the package and mop any desired method may be used. Blank 35 may be folded `around the mop and then sealed in the manner heretofore described, or it may be first folded and sealed and either drawn upwardly over the mop, or the mop may be inserted therein from the top of portion 35.

After assembly by any of the previously mentioned methods, the mop and package are wrapped in 'a transparent wrapper 45 which may be folded thereabout and sealed or otherwise secured in any suitable manner to completely enclose the mop and its supporting member 35.

Either -or both package 35 and wrapper 45 may of course carry any suitable printed matter or decoration as desired.

Having reference now to Figures 5 to 8, inclusive, there is disclosed a modified form of the invention. It may here be pointed out that at the present time mops are customarily made in triangular form, either in the form of an equalateral triangle as previously disclosed, or in the form of an isosceles triangle having a relatively wide base as shown in Fig. 6. In the latter case the angle at the apex is comparatively great and it is therefore necessary that the package take a form to accommodate this angle in a vsimplified manner, resulting in the use of less material and fewer manufacturing and assembly operations.

Referring particularly to Figures 5 and 6, there is disclosed a mop generally indicated at |20, the head of which is in the form of an obtuse angled isosceles triangle. Mop head is comprised of a top plate |2| formed with a centrally disposed groove |22 to the depending flanges of which is secured as by a pin |23, a handle socket |24. Socket |24, as in the preceding illustration, is split and provided with oppose-d ears |25 through registering apertures in which passes a screw |26 provided with a wing nut |21 whereby a handle (not shown) may be secured therein. Likewise rivets |28 holda folded Vcloth band |29 in related assembly with the peripheral depending iiange of plate 2|, and a line of stitching |38 secures the strands |3| of the mop within the `fold of band |29.

Projections |31 and |39 are divided into three equal sections by fold lines |40 so that when assembled they take the form of trilateral supporting members as shown in Figure 8.

Projection |38, which in the illustration is shown as of lesser width than projections |31 and |39, though this need not of necessity be the case, is provided with a single fold line 40a; whereby when the package is in assembled position, projection |38 forms a bilateral supporting member.

Projection |38 thus may be readily folded to an obtuse angle, relatively closely engaging the obtuse apex angle of triangular mop head |20 and thus a saving of material and a manufacturing and an assembly operation is effected.

As `in the foregoing illustrations portions |3Ba and |3617 are held in related assembly in any desired manner as by means of staples |42, though it will again be understood that other means, as for example, interlocking slits, (not shown) in portions |36a and |361) may befemployed if desired. Also the assembled mop head |20 and package |35 are wrapped in any suitable transparent wrapper, |45.

While in the foregoing illustrations three projections have been shown, serving as bilateral or trilateral supports for a mop, it will be understood that more projections may be utilized in the case of multilateral mops, and that any or all of those projections may be bilateral, trilateral, or by the formation of additional scoring lines of a shape adapted to accommodate a corner of any configuration.

It will therefore be seen that there is herein provided a support and display package for mops, which embodies all the objects of this invention including many advantages of lgreat practical utility, including particularly, the use of a relatively small quantity of material, and` great ease of manufacture and assembly.

v./-ls many embodiments may be made of thisv 'inventive concept and as many modifications may be made in the embodiments herein described and shown it is to be understood'that all matter hereinbefore set out or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

What I claim is:

l. In a display assembly, 4a mop or the like, having flexible strands and a band to which said strands are secured, an extending strip folded into multilateral form, said strip being disposed at the exterior of the strands in engagement with said band of said mop to support the band in elevated position with the strands depending therefrom, spaced projections extending at substantially right angles from said strip and of approximately the length of said strands, to form a support for said band, and 'hence said mop, in display position and fold lines extending longitudinally of said projections and across said strip whereby said projections form supports at the corners of said multilateral form.

2. In a display assembly, a mop or the like, having flexible strands and a band to which ysaid strands are secured, an extending strip folded into multilateral form, said strip being disposed at the exterior of the strands in engagement with said band of said mop to support the band in elevated position with the strands depending therefrom, spaced projections extending at substantially right angles to said strip and of a length in excess of the length of said strands, to form a support for said band, and hence said mop, in dis- `play position, and a pair of parallel fold lines extending longitudinally of each of said projections and across said strip whereby said projections form tri-lateral supports at the corners ofy said multilateral form.

3. In a display assembly, a mop or the like, having flexible strands and a band to which said strands are secured, an extending strip folded into triangular form, said strip being disposed at the exterior of the strands in engagement with said band of said mop to support the band in elevated position with the strands depending therefrom, spaced projections extending at substantially right angles to said strip and of a length in excess of the length of said strands, to form a support for said band, and hence said mop in display position, two of said projections being provided with a pair of parallel fold lines extending longitudinally thereof and across said strip whereby said two projections form trilateral supports at two angles of said triangular form, and the third of said projections being provided with a single fold line whereby to form a bilateral support at the third angle of said triangle.

4. In a display assembly, a mop or the like, having flexible strands and a band to which said strands are secured, an extending strip folded into multilateral form, said strip being disposed at the exterior of the strands in engagement with said band of said mop to support the band in elevated position with the strands depending therefrom, spaced projections extending at substantially right angles to said strip to form a support for said band, and hence said mop, in display position and fold lines extending longitudinally of said projections and across said strip whereby said projections form supports at the corners of said multilateral form.

5. In a display assembly, a mop or the like, having flexible strands and a band to which said strands are secured, an extending strip folded into multilateral form, said strip being disposed at the exterior of the strands in engagement with said band of said mop to support the band in elevate-d position with the strands depending therefrom, spaced projections extending at substantially right angles to said strip to form a support for said band, and hence said mop, in display position, and a pair of parallel fold lines extending through each of said projections and across said strip whereby said projections form ytri-lateral supports at the corners of said multilateral form.

6. In a display assembly, a mop or the like, having flexible strands and a band to which said strands are secured, an extending strip folded into triangular form, said strip being disposed at the exterior of the strands in engagement with said band of said mop to support the band in elevated position with the strands depending therefrom, spaced projections extending at substantially right angles to said strip to form a support for said band, and hence said mop in display position, two of said projections being provided with a pair of fold lines extending through said strip whereby said two projections form trilateral supports at two angles of sai-d triangular form, and the third of said projections being provided with a single longitudinally extending fold line whereby to form a bilateral support at the third angle of said triangle.

7. In a display assembly, a mop or the like, having flexible strands and a band to which said strands are secured, an extending strip folded into multilateral form, said strip being disposed at the exterior of the strands in engagement with 'I said band of said mop to support the band in elevated position with the strands depending there--y from, spaced projections extending 'at substantially right angles to said strip to form a support for said band, and hence said mop, in display position and fold lines extending longitudinally o1' said projections and across said strip whereby said projections form supports at the corners of said multilateral form, and means securing said strip in said multilateral form.
