Description

(Pct. 13, 1942. K. SCHMIDT COMBINATION PURSE AND BILLFOLD Filed Oct. 11, 1941 INVENTOI. MEL ScHM/D 7 14 TTO/P/VE Y5 Patented Oct. 13, 1942 COMBINATION PURSE AND BILLFOLD Karl Schmidt, Brooklyn, N. Y., assignor to Marioness & Company Inc., New York, N. Y.
Application October 11, 1941, Serial No. 414,571
Claims.
This invention relates to a combination purse and billfold.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a combined purse and billfold which will retain the contents securely and still permit ready access thereto.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combined purse and billfold that will hold the bills securely against dislodgernent when the purse is opened and which will permit immediate inspection of the denominations of the bills without having to withdraw them from the blllfold.
Still a further object is to provide a combined purse and billfold which may be partially unfolded to disclose the adjacent ends of the bills contained therein, while still frictionally holding these bills within the billfold in folded condition, so that the user may, by engaging one or more of the adjacent ends of the bills, pull the same from the billfold without disturbing the remaining bills contained therein and without the necessity of opening the billfold completely and, consequently, without exposing the contents of the purse.
Other objects and advantages inherent in the invention will become apparent from the following description which is taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the inventive concept.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the combined purse and billfold, according to the invention, in folded condition.
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the combined purse and billfold in open position so that access may be had to the coin compartment as well as the bill section of the device.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the device in completely unfolded condition and in such position that access may be had to the bills contained therein while the coin compartment remains closed.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal section of the billfold in its unfolded condition showing the coin compartment in opened position.
Throughout the drawing the same reference characters indicate the same or analagous parts.
The invention comprises a pair of superimposed, elongated strips l0 and II. These. strips are preferably rectangular in shape and made of flexible material, such as leather, textile fabric or other suitable fabric. The strips l0 and II are joined together along the bottom edge 12 and along the longitudinal side l3, leaving the longitudinal sides It detached from one another. In this manner a compartment is formed open at the top and at one side for the insertion of the bills 15.
It will be understood, however, that instead of having two superimposed strips, the compartment or billfold may be formed of a single strip folded to form the bottom edge I2 and then attached along one of the longitudinal sides.
The length of the strips Ill and II should be slightly in excess of the paper money bills so as to permit them to lie smoothly between the superimposed strips when at full length. The superimposed strips ill and II may be folded along the transverse line IE to form a front section I1 and a rear section l8. Slightly above the folded line IS the strip III is divided into two branches l9 and 20, branch 20 being a continuationof and in alignment with strip ID. A triangular insert 2l is interposed between the branches l9 and 20. The base of the triangular insert is of such a width that it will permit the frame members 22 and 23, which are pivoted at 24 to open a sufficient distance to permit access to the coin compartment formed by the branches l9 and 20 and the triangular inserts 2|.
The triangular inserts 2| become folded when the frame members 22 and 23 are clasped together, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawing.
The frame members may be provided with a clamping device 25 to maintain the same in closed position.
Thus the coin compartment is constitutedby the branches l9 and 20 and the foldable triangular gussets 2|. Thev branch 20 is attached to the strip ll only at its upper corners leaving a slot between the strip II and the branch 20. The edges of the bills l5 are accommodated in this slot. The upper edge of the branch 20 is provided with a flexible flap 26 which may be folded down so as to permit inspection of the edges of the bills.
The strip Ill, if desired, may be provided with pockets 21 and 28.
A flap 29 may be secured to the frame member 23. The flap 29 is provided with a male fastener 30 on its interior surface and which is adapted to engage the female fastener 3| on the exterior surface of the strip H. In this manner, the billfold formed by the strips l0 and II and the branch 20 may be maintained in folded condition.
In operation, the bills are placed inside the compartment, flat against the strip I I. The billfold is then folded and fastening members 30 and 3| snapped together.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that access may be had to the coin compartment formed by the branch members It and 20 and the triangular insert 2| without disclosing the bills in the bill compartment and vice versa. The edges of the bills may be disclosed to view simply by folding down the flap 26 and thus the bills may be counted without removing them from the billfold. If it is desired to remove one of the bills a strong pull on the selected bill will dis lodge it from its neighbor.
It will be understood that this disclosure is given by way of example only and not by way of limitation. The invention may find a variety of expressions within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
