UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM S. WINTERBOTTOM, OF PHILADELPHIA, AND JOHN MURRAY, OF
CONSHOHOGKEN, PENNSYLVANIA.
SAW-CLAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,851, dated July 13, 1880. Application filed January 16, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, WILLIAM S. WINTER- BOTTOM, of the cityjand county of Philadelphia, and JOHN MURRAY, of Oonshohocken, in the county of Montgomery, both in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Saw-Clamps, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and'accompanying drawings; in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a section in line x m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters .of reference. indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Our invention consists of a clamp for firmly securing the blade and handle of a saw, con structed of a yoke, a connecting screw or pin, and a tightening-screw, as will be hereinafter set forth.
Referring to, the drawings, A represents the blade of a saw, and B the handle,- which, excepting as far as relates to our invention, may be of usual form and construction.
0 represents a yoke, consisting of a threesided or bifurcated piece, the limbs a a of which are adapted to embrace the sides of the handle, and the top or transverse piece, I), of which to overhang the upper face of the handle and back of the blade. The lower ends of the limbs areperforated for the passage of a connecting screw or pin, D, and the piece b has fitted to it a tightening-screw, E, adapted to bear against the back of the blade A.
The blade and handle are pierced at coincident places for the reception of the bolt or pin D, the head of which bears against the limb a of the yoke O, the end or point screwing into the other limb, a, or projecting be- 40 yond the same, and having a nut which tightens against said limb a, either case preventing disengagement or disconnection of the screw or pin D.
When the yoke O and screw or pin D are 5 in position the screw E is tightened against the back of the blade, the blade and handle being thus immovably and securely clamped together.
If desired, a small notch or groove may be formed in the back of the blade to receive the point of the screw E.
It will be seen that the blade and handle need only be pierced for the passage of the screw D, thus avoiding more than one perforation therein and. weakening of the parts, and when the blade or handle breaks or requires separation the screw E is loosened and the screw or pin D removed. The clamp being thus no longer connected to the blade and han- 6o dle permits the blade to be released from the handle simply by drawing one from the other.
It will also be seen that the clamp is simple, inexpensive, and reliable.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a saw blade and han dle, of a clamp consisting of the yoke 0, connecting screw or pin D, and tightening-screw E, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
