Definitions

  • the oscillatory circuits are formed of so-called concentrated capacities and inductances, because the wave-lengths are too small to allow of arranging a concentrated capacity or condenser. Also, in the case of very short wavelengths the self-capacities of the coils and the self-inductances of the condensers as well as of the leads thereto are particulars that require consideration in certain respects. Therefore, the oscillatory circuits are formed as Lecher wire systems. that is to say, systems comprising two wires which are parallel to each other. The length of such circuits is a multiple of M4, where A is the operative wavelength. Since the Lecher wire system has to be tuned it has previously been necessary to provide for varying the effective length 01' the Lecher wires to effect the tuning.
  • the Lecher wire system is not altered in this way, thus being left constant in length.
  • the free ends of the Lecher wires are bent into a. semicircular shape and a disc or plate is arranged to be inserted into the interspace of the wire ends so shaped.
  • This disc which to such end may be rotatable or slidable, has a dielectric constant e greater than that of air, a fact which may be expressed by the relation 1.
  • the arrangement is such that the disc does not contact with the Lecher wires.
  • the disc ma for instance, be of a ceramic material of the kind. having a high e-value and small losses, or may consist of polystyrolene or the like.
  • the invention provides a number of semicircular wire stages each comprising semicircular wiresandadiscadaptedtobeinsertedinto the interspace thereof to tune such stages in the aforesaid manner.
  • FIG. 1 is a diagrammatic viewshowing an elementary form of systems as provided by the invention
  • Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic representation illustrating a number of such ele entary forms, these constituting stages adapted to be interconnected,
  • Fig. 3 is a di arammatic view showing a modiflcation of the arrangement represented in Fig. l.
  • L denotes Lecher wires which in Figs. 1 and 2 are shown to be semicircular at their free ends.
  • a rotatable disc H is arranged to be turned into the interspace of these wire ends without contacting therewith.
  • switches S, Fig. 2 may be arranged to allow of selectively elongating or shortening the wires L by either adding or disconnecting emicircular divisions L. Each such division has a disc H for tuning it.
  • Figs. 1 and 2 are susceptible of many variations.
  • a plate as shown in Fig. 3 may be provided, which is composed of two parts A, B each having an e-value diiierent from that of the other part. This plate, adapted to be moved indifferent directions as indicated by the arrows, enables the effective e-value to be continually increased.
  • a Lecher wire system comprising a pair of Lecher wires and means for eilecting continuous tuning of said Lecher wires by varying the capacity per unit length of said wires from one end thereof comprising a body having a dielectric constant greater than unity mounted for selective adjustable insertion between said wires from one end thereof and along the length thereof, said member being in insulated relation with respect to said wires.
  • a system comprising a pair of Lecher wires
