UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB BOYERS, OF BRIMFIELD, INDIANA.
SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,085, dated June 22, 1880.
' Application filed January 16, 1880. 7
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J A0013 BOYERS, of Brimfleld, in the county of Noble and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Bed-Bottoms and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to theaccompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a-plan view. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
Thisinventionrelates to spring bed-bottoms; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the annexed drawings, A represents a rectangular frame, the sides of which are provided with staples B B, forming bearings for rods O G. 1) l) are springs coiled upon said rods in such a manner that their endsE shall bear against the sides and ends of frame A, while their central portions form loops F, which are so disposed as to point toward the inside of the frame. G G are pulleys journaled in blocks or staples H H, attached to the loops F of the springs D, as shown. Upon the ends of frame A the pulleys G G are placed close together, but upon the sides they are arranged some distance apart and near the middle of the said sides.
Upon the pulleys G, which are placed horizontally, as shown,is stretched a rope,I. Gommencing at one corner of the frame, the said rope is first passed over the pulleys at the ends of the frame, it being stretched from end to end, forward and. backward, asshown. The
last pulley being reached, (at the corner diagonally opposite to the starting-point,) the rope is passed from thence to one of the pulleys at the side of the frame, across the latter, and back, and so on, always under the cords first stretched lengthwise, which are thus supported until the last pulley is reached, from which the end of the cord is passed back to the starting-point and tied.
J J are bails or staples of wire, the legs of V which are interwoven with the cords stretched lengthwise in the frame and hooked over the outer ones, which are thereby connected and prevented from being displaced.
From the foregoing description, taken in connect-ion with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. It is simple in construction, inexpensive, and durable, and, owing to the springs upon which the pulleys G G are supported, it makes an elastic and comfortable bed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a bed-bottom, the combination of the frame A, provided at its sides and ends with rods 0, having loops F, blocks H, and pulleys Gr, connected thereto by springs D, with the cord or rope I, traversing said frame longitudinally and also transyersely near its middle portion, and the wire bails J, interwoven with the cords, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my'own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JACOB BOYERS.
