Description

A. B STEVENS. Childs Chair No. 229,061. Patented June 22,1880.
Wflqesses.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ASHER B. STEVENS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THOMPSON, EERLEY & WAITE, OF BALDWINSVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
CHILDS CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,061, dated June 22, 1880.
Application filed October 1, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AsHEaB. STEVENS, of Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Ohildrens Ohairs, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to a childs chair and carriage, and has for its object such a construction and combination of parts thereof as will enable the same to be readily converted into a high-chair or carriage, and I have also so constructed the parts that I may also produce from the same parts a rocking-chair.
Figure 1 represents, in side elevation, a childs chair containing my invention, the ta ble being shown as suspended back of the chair Fig. 2, a side elevation thereof, the seat being lowered by turning the wheel-carrying 2o legs under it to convert the chair into a carriage, and the table being placed to serve as a top for the carriage; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section, showing one set of legs turned under to form rockers, the same set of legs in Fig.
2 5 2 serving as the pushing-handle for the carwage.
The seat a has side arms, a, and back a, all as usual, and at the front of the seat are short pieces a, rigidly connected therewith,
0 which support the foot-board b, all as usual.
At the lower ends of the pieces a are hinged or pivoted, at 2, the movable parts 0 of the front legs, the said parts at each side of the seat being provided at each end with rollers 3 5 or Wheels 0 0 to rest upon the floor or ground When the legs a are turned under the seat, as at Fig. 2.
Thecurved rear legs, (I, are pivoted at 3 upon links 0, adjustably connected with braces f,
attached at 4 to the legs 0, the legs and braces being pivotally connected by links 9.
When a high chair is desired, as in Fig. 1, the connecting-round 6, joining the upper free ends of the legs cl, (shown in Fig. 3,) is en- 5 gaged by a fastening device, 7, shown as a hook attached to the chair-seat. (See Fig. 3.)
If a carriage is desired, the legs d are freed from the fastening device, the legs 0 are turned back under the seat, and the legs (I are brought 0 up againstthe back of the seat until the round 8,
joiningthe braces f, (see Fig. 3,) is placed in position to be engaged by the fastening device 7. In this position the stopping devices h, connected with the braces f, rest against the short arms 10 of the legs d, preventing them from turning farther in that direction about the points 3, and the links 6, slotted at e and notched at 6 are then so moved along the braces f, as in Fig. 2, that the forked parts of the said links embrace the pins 6 keeping legs 01 up at the rear of the seat to serve as a pushing-handle for the carriage.
To form a canopy-top, the table 1', pivoted upon the ends of the links j, jointed at 12 to the arms a, may be elevated and reversed, as in Fig. 2, and the table-rim 13 be hooked over the top of the back a Projections 14 on arms a, receive the links j when the table is in position at the front of the chair, as in Fig. 3, and projections 15 0t the table then rest against the under side of the links j, thereby preventing the table from dropping at its outer end beyond the pivotal points 16.
For a rocking-chair, draw the links 0 and legs 61 so that the notched parts 6' are removed from the pins 6 turn the said links 6 on the pins e into theposition shown in Fig. 3, and the legs 01 on the pivotal points 3 and under the seat and legs 0 until the ends of the parts a rest on the concaved edges of the legs d, when the convexcd edges of the said legs serve as rockers.
A suitable connecting device, 1), (shown dotted in Fig. 3,) may connect the foot-rest b with the round 6.
I claim 1. In a chair, a seat and its portions a, the pivoted legs provided with two sets of rollers,
c 0 the braces f, and connected back legs, removably attached at their upper ends with the seat, whereby the said parts may be used as a high chair or be changed in position, as shown and described, to form a carriage.
2. The curved legs 01 and slotted and notched 5 links 0, combined with the braces f and front legs, to adapt the said legs at to serve as a handle for the carriage or for rockers, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof Ihave signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ASHEB B. STEVENS.
