This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a twin slide fastener mattress for a studio couch, sofa bed, etc.
More specifically, the invention proposes the construction of a means arranged in connection with an article having a minimum of two separate mattresses for connecting together the adjacent edges of the mattresses in a manner to form an integral unit of the sections.
More specifically, it is proposed to apply the invention to the mattresses of a studio couch, sofa bed, love seat, chair bed, day bed, or similar extendable article having two or more separate mattresses.
Still further it is proposed to characterize each mattress by a narrow pocket extended along one side thereof and having a stringer of slide fasteners mounted within the pocket and extendable therefrom to be engaged with a stringer of like slide fastener elements mounted upon the adjacent edge of an adjacent mattress.
Still further it is proposed to provide the open top of the pocket with cooperative fasteners for holding the pocket closed.
A further object of the invention proposes to provide the stringers of slide fastener elements with openings at points along the length thereof and through which the cooperative fasteners are adapted to be engaged for closing the pocket in the extended position of the stringers.
Still further a modification of the invention proposes the provision of a means for retaining the pocket in its retracted position at all times.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a studio couch constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is an open plan view of the studio couch with the adjacent edges of its mattresses connected together.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to a portion of Fig. 3 but illustrating the stringer in its retracted position.
Fig. 5 is a vertical line 55 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a love seat constructed in accordance with this invention.
sectional view sectional View taken on the through the openings M for also retaining the Fig. 7 is a plan view position.
Fig. 8 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on the line 88 of Fig. 7.
The twin slide fastener mattress for studio couches, sofa beds and the like, according to this invention, is shown applied to a studio couch H] comprising a base section m having an integral mattress and upon which a separable mattress Hl is positioned. The base section l0 is characterized by the fact that it includes a frame, not shown on the drawing, which is eXtendable from the back thereof and upon which the mattress HP is adapted to be rested for transforming the studio couch into a double bed. Details of this frame and its association with the base section Ill are not given as it forms no part of the invention and its construction is obvious to those skilled in the art.
The open position of the studio couch is shown in Fig. 2 and the adjacent edges of the base Ill and the mattress I9 are connected together by means of adjacent stringers of slide fasteners ll mounted upon the adjacent edges of these sections. The slide fasteners I l are of the separable type and when the control slide H is moved to separate these fasteners the stringers are completely separated, permitting the mattress Ill to of the love seat in its open be positioned on the base section It, as shown in Fig. 1.
Both the base section I9 are provided with a narrow pocket I?! extending along one side thereof. The stringers of slide fasteners are mounted within the pockets l2 and are retained in position by means of stitches l3. When the studio couch is in the position as shown in Fig. l the stringers of slide fasteners are normally positioned within the pocket as shown in Fig. 4, and are extendable therefrom as shown in Fig. 3 to permit the fasteners to be engaged with each other. At spaced points along their lengths the stringers of slide fasteners are formed with openings 14.
and the mattress Ill A means is provided for closing the open top of the pockets l2. This means comprises cooperative snap fastener elements l5 mounted upon the adjacent faces of the open top of each of the pockets and engageahle with each other in the retracted posltion of the stringers of slide fasteners for retaining the same in their retracted positions. When the stringers of slide fasteners are extended from the openingsof the pockets the cooperative snap fastener elements l5 are adapted to be engaged with each other pockets in their closed positions when the stringers are extended. The pockets 12 are to be open only when the stringers are being removed therefrom or engaged therein. These snap fastener elements 15 are of the type which tightly frictionally engage each other so as to maintain their engaged positions to hold the pocket closed unless manual pulling power is applied thereto to separate the same.
The operation of this form of the invention is as follows:
Normally the studio couch is in the position illustrated in Fig. 1. To convert the same into a double bed having its mattresses joined'together to form an integral unit the studio couch is pulled from the wall permittingthe supporting frame to be projected from the back thereof. Th mattress 19 is then rolled over upon its rear edge to rest upon the supporting frame. This exposes the pockets l2 in positions adjacent to each other and the pockets are opened and the stringers of slide fasteners extended therefrom to be engaged with each other as shown in Fig. 2. The snap fasteners l5 are again engaged with each other through the openings M for retaining the pockets in their closed positions to maintain the base section it and mattress lo in positions immediately adjacent each other.
In Figs. 6 to 8 a modification of the invention is shown applied to a love seat It! consisting of a base section Ii! and a horizontal mattress 10 and a vertical mattress 10. The base section Ill of the love seat houses an extendable frame upon which the mattress sections 10 and 3 are adapted to be placed for converting the love seat into a bed. The adjacent edges of the base section I9 and the mattresses lil and ID are provided with the means previously described for connecting the adjacent edges of these sections to form an integral unit thereof.
This form of the invention distinguishes from that previously described in that it is provided with a means for retaining th pockets 12in their retracted positions within the mattress sections at all times. This means comprises strips of elastic material It substantially equal in length to the length of the pockets l2. One edge of the strips I6 is attached to an adjacent por-' tion of the pockets l2 by means of stitches H. The other edge of the strip l are stitched to an adjacent portion of the body of th mattress for holding the pockets retracted. The latter stitches are indicated by reference numeral l8.
In other respects this form of the invention is identical to the previous form and like parts are indicated by like reference numerals.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secur by United States Letters Patent is:
