Description

July 7, 1942- A. J. MATTER 2,289,136
PAINTERS MASKING DEVICE Filed Dec. 20, 1940 Patented July 7, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PAINTERS MASKING DEVICE Albert J. Matter, Park Ridge, Ill.
Application December 20, 1940, Serial No. 371,033
8 Claims. f (Cl. Ill- 65) My invention relates to a device to be used in painting one of two adjacent surfaces, such as for example and more especially, the sash members of window sashes, for the protecting of the surface not to be painted, as for example, the panes of glass of the sashes, against access thereto of paint in the painting operation. More especially it relates to a device for the purpose set forth provided as a tool which the painter. by the use of one hand, applies to operative position, holding it in place while he paints with the other hand, shifting the device into successive positions along the article to be painted as the painting proceeds.
One of my objects is to provide a device for the purpose set forth, particularly for the painting of window sashes, by the use of which the possibility of paint becoming deposited on the part to be protected in the painting operation and the smearing of paint on such part in the` manipulating of the device, particularly out of operative position, will be avoided.
Another object is to provide such a device which will not require, for the accomplishment of the object above mentioned, great care in the manipulation thereof into and out of operative position, and successive positionings thereof may be quickly effected without depositing or smearing paint on the part to be protected; and other objects as will be manifest from the following :I
description.
Referring to the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved device.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view in section of a window sash to be painted showing my improved device in section applied to operative position thereon, the section through the device being taken at the line 2 on Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrow; and
Figure 3, a similar view of the structure and device shown in Fig. 2, illustrating the manner of operating the device out of operative position, the section through the device being taken at the line 3 on Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrow.
Referring to the illustrated embodiment of my invention, the device comprises a blade portion 4 preferably of Very thin sheet material as for example and preferably spring steel of about 26 gage, having an obliquely disposed flange portion 5 at its rear edge to which a handle 6 by which the device may be manipulated and shown as upwardly and rearwardly inclined, is attached, as for example by means of a rigid plate I secured to the flange portion 5 midway between its ends in any suitable way as for instance by welding it thereto.
Located at the underside of the flange portion 5 at different points therealong, are members 8 in the form of buttons of material of such character that it tends to cling to a surface, such as for example a pane of glass, to which it is applied and thus prevent slipping of the device on such surface, such a material for example being soft rubber.
The buttons 8 which are secured to the flange portion 5 in any suitable way, as for example by means of headed studs 9 integral therewith and located in holes Sla in the flange portion 5 through which they are crowded in assembling them with the flange portion, are of rounded contour at their undersides, as represented at I0 at which rounded portions, which form a rocker surface, the device is adapted to be seated in use against the surface to be protected in the painting operation, as for example the glass pane II of a window sash I2 with the forward terminal edge of the blade proper 4 seated in the interior langle I3 between the sash member I4 and the glass pane II, as represented in Fig. 2.
Upon finishing the painting of that portion of the sash member I4 which is in registration with the device, the device is removed from operative position and re-positioned at the end of the painted portion of the sash member to perform its protecting function and the painting of that portion of the sash member which is opposite the 11e-positioned device continued, these alternate operations being repeated until the painting of the sash is completed; or the device may be slid along from one position to the next.
As will be noted, the blade 4, when the device is in operative position, inclines forwardly toward the glass pane I I which is to be protected, presenting a thin edge where it extends into the interior angle I3, and the parts of the device are so related as shown, that a wide clearance between the handle 6 and the glass pane II is provided, adapting the device in removing it from operative position, to be rocked on such part at the rocker surface I0 as shown in Fig. 3, whereby the front edge of the blade portion 4 moves in an arc away from the glass pane II, as represented by the curved line I5 and in the direction of the arrow associated therewith, thus moving out of the interior angle I3 in which it is positioned in use, without rubbing against the painted sash member I4; the provision of the anti-slip surface at which the device engages the glass pane II preventing the blade 4 from sliding on the pane and thereby preventing accidental smearing of paint on the pane.
While I have illustrated and described a particular construction embodying my invention I do not wish to be understood as intending to limit it thereto as the same may be variously modified and altered and the invention embodied in other forms of structure without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A masking device comprising a blade portion to extend at its forward edge into the angle between a part to be painted and a part to be protected against access of paint thereto in painting the other part, the device having portions spaced rearwardly from said edge and spaced apart along the blade and which bear against the part to be protected and on which the device is rocked out of operative position.
2. A masking device comprising a blade portion to extend at its forward edge into the angle between a part to be painted and a part to be protected against access of paint thereto in painting the other part, the device having portions spaced rearwardly from said edge and located adjacent the ends of said blade and spaced apart along the blade for bearing against the part to be protected and on which the device is rocked out of operative position.
3. A masking device comprising a blade portion to extend at its forward edge into the angle between a part to be painted and a part to be protected against access of paint thereto in painting the other part, the device having rocker portions spaced rearwardly from said edge and spaced apart along the blade which bear against the part to be protected and on which the device is rocked out of operative position.
4. A masking device comprising a blade portion to extend at its forward edge into the angle between a part to be painted and a part to be protected against access of paint thereto in painting the other part, the device having rocker portions spaced rearwardly from said edge and located adjacent the ends of said blade and spaced apart for bearing against the part to be protected and on which the device is rocked out of operative position.
5. A masking device comprising a blade portion to extend at its forward edge into the angle between a part to be painted and a part to be protected against access of paint thereto in painting the other part, the device having nonslip portions spaced rearwardly from said edge and spaced apart along the blade which bear against the part to be protected and on which the device is rocked out of operative position.
6. A masking device comprising a blade portion to extend at its forward edge into the angle between a part to be painted and a part to be protected against access of paint thereto in painting the other part, the device having nonslip portions spaced rearwardly from said edge and located adjacent the ends of said blade and spaced apart for bearing against the part to be protected and on which the device is rocked out of operative position.
7. A masking device comprising a blade portion to extend at its forward edge into the angle between a part to be painted and a part to be protected against access of paint thereto in painting the other part, the device having non-slip rocker portions spaced rearwardly from said edge and spaced apart along the blade adjacent its rear edge which bear against the part to be protected and on which the device is rocked out of operative position.
8. A masking device comprising a blade portion to extend at its forward edge into the angle between a part to be painted and a part to be protected against access of paint thereto in painting the other part, the device having nonslip rocker portions spaced rearwardly from said edge and located adjacent the ends of said blade and spaced apart for bearing against the part to be protected and on which the device is rocked out of operative position.
