EDGER ATTACHMENT FOR PAINT BRUSHES Filed Aug. 5, 196s /3 l5 0 INVENTOR. /z ARTHUR RoGHoLT ATTORNEYS United States Patent Office 3,210,791 Patented Oct. 12, 1965 3,210,791 EDGER ATTACHMENT FOR PAINT BRUSHES Arthur Rogholt, RR. 2, Cass Lake, Minn. Filed Aug. 5, 1963, Ser. No. 299,774 2 Claims. (Cl. 15-248) This invention relates generally to painting tools and equipment, and more particularly, it relates to an edger attachment for paint brushes.
The edger attachment of the present invention generally includes a shielding plate pivotally mounted on a paint brush for movements between an operative position for guiding the bristle end portions of the brush and an inoperative position away from the bristles of the brush.
An important object of the present invention is the provision of an edger attachment for paint brushes which is particularly useful in trimming or edging along the margin of a surface to be painted so as to prevent the overlapping of the paint upon the adjacent surfaces.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of an edger attachment for paint brushes which is particularly useful in painting the inside corners of walls and ceilings and which is also extremely usefull for painting casings and window sash where it is desirable to prevent the overlapping of paint onto the adjacent surfaces.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of an edger attachment for paint brushes which is provided with adjustable mounting means so as to permit the attachment of the shielding plate in the desired position.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of an edger attachment for paint brushes in which the shielding plate thereof is disposed and arranged so that the guiding edge portion is spaced above the bristle end portions of the normally straight bristles whereby the edge portion of the shielding plate generally coincides with the bristle end portions when the bristles of the brush are flexed for painting.
A still further object of the present invention resides in the provision of an edger attachment for paint brushes in which the shielding plate may be quickly and easily moved to an inoperative position to permit dipping of the brush in a paint container, and in which the shielding plate of the attachment is mounted for quick and easy removal for cleaning purposes.
Other objects of the present invention reside in the provision of an edger attachment for paint brushes which permits extremely accurate painting along edges of marginal surfaces, which is easy to use without the possession or attainment of extraordinary skill, and which lends itself to economical manufacture.
The above and still further objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from a consideration of the following detailed specification, attached drawings and appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate like parts or elements throughout the several views:
FIG. l is a View in perspective showing the novel paint brush edger attachment of the present invention in its operative position;
FIG. 2 is a View in perspective showing the edger attachment in its inoperative position for dipping of the brush into a paint container;
FIG. 3 is an enlarged plan View, showing by broken lines the alternative brushing or flexed position of the bristles of the brush;
FIG. 4 is a view in section taken on the line 4w-4 of FIG. 3, and showing the brush and attachment in an operative painting position; and
FIG. 5 is an enlarged view in section taken on the line 5-5 of FIG. 3.
. Referring more particularly to the drawings, the reference numeral 1 represents av paint brush in its entirety to which my novel edger attachment is secured. The paint brush 1 includes a handle 2 extending from the head 3 of the paint brush 1. The reference numeral 4 represents the bristles of the paint brush which are secured in the usual manner by a binder 5 to the paint brush head 3 by means of an annular band 6.
The novel edger attachment provided in accordance with the present invention includes a mounting bracket, represented generally by the reference numeral 7, comprising a back plate portion 8 having a pair of laterally spaced slots or apertures 9 therein. The mounting bracket 7 is secured to the head 3 of the paint brush 1 adjacent one side thereof by means of a pair of screws 10 or the like which project through the apertures 9, as shown particularly in FIGS. 3 and 4. The mounting bracket 7 further comprises a pair of axially spaced and aligned end journals 11 for pivotal mounting purposes, as will be particularly described hereinafter.
The edger attachment further comprises a generally at shielding plate 12 formed from generally rigid sheet material, such as sheet metal or plastic. The heel portion 13 of the shielding plate 12 is formed to define a generally tubular journal 14 adapted to t between the spaced journals 11 of the mounting bracket 7, as shown particularly in FIG. 3 of the drawings. The shielding plate 12 is removably mounted by means of an elongated connecting pin 15 which extends through the aligned journals 11, 14. The shielding plate 12 is thereby mounted for pivotal swinging movements between an operative shielding or guiding position shown particularly in FIGS. l and 4 wherein the shielding plate 12 is disposed adjacent the bristles of the brush and an inoperative position away from the brush, shown particularly in FIG. 2. It is noted that the connecting pin 15 is frictionally engaged within the journals 11, 14 so that the same may be removed to permit removal of the shielding plate 12 from the brush 1 for cleaning purposes or for normal painting use of the brush 1. Accordingly, the connecting pin 15 defines at one end thereof a handle portion 16.
As shown particularly in FIGS. 3 and 4, the shielding plate 12 of the edger attachment defines the lower edge portion 17 which is flat and generally straight and which is adapted to guide and lineate the bristle end portions 18 of the brush 1, in the manner shown particularly in FIGS. 1 and 4 of the drawings. It is noted that the shielding plate 12 is of a length designed to dispose the lower edge portion 17 thereof in spaced relation above the bristle end portions 18 of the brush 1 when the bristles 4 are in their normally straight condition. However, with this arrangement, when the bristles 4 of the brush 1 are flexed or placed in their condition for painting, as shown by the broken lines in FIG. 3, the lower edge portion 17 of the shielding plate 12 will coincide generally with the bristle end portions 18.
In accordance with the present invention, the lower edge portion 17 of the shielding plate 12 is formed to extend in general parallelism with the plane of the brush 1 when the shielding plate 12 is in its operative condition, as shown in FIG. 4, whereby to guide and lineate the bristle end portions 18 of the brush 1 and prevent the overlapping of paint onto the adjacent surfaces which are not to be painted. Another feature of the present invention is illustrated particularly in FIGS. l and 3, wherein it will be noted that the shielding plate 12, and particularly the generally flat lower edge portion 17 thereof is wider than the width of the brush 1 to which the edger attachment is adapted for securement so that when the bristles 4 of the brush 1 are flexed, as shown in FIGS. l and 3, the bristle end portions 18 will still be guided and directed by the shielding plate 12. With this arrangement, it is assured that the bristles 4 of the brush 1 will be guided at all times during painting strokes so as to prevent the overlapping of paint onto the adjacent surfaces.
It will be noted that the heel portion 13 of the shielding plate 12 is narrower than the main body portion thereof .and the shielding plate therefore denes outwardly diverging angle edge portions 19 which connect with the generally parallel lateral edge portions 20 of the shielding plate 12.
As shown particularly in FIG. 4, the shielding plate 12 is formed to dene a tab 21 which extends generally laterally outwardly from the journal 14 thereof for manual engagement by the users thumb, as shown particularly in FIG. 2, for moving the shielding plate 12 to its inoperative position, shown in FIG. 2. Also, the tab 21 may be conveniently engaged by the users thumb when the paint brush 1 and edger attachment are -being used in the operative position, as shown in FIG. l, for holding the shielding plate 12 against the bristles for the brush 1.
This invention has been thoroughly tested and found to be completely satisfactory for the accomplishment of the above objects; and while I have shown and described above a preferred embodiment thereof in which the principles of the present invention have been incorporated, I wish it to be specifically understood that the same may be modified without departure from the scope and spirit of 4the appended claims.
