Description

July 17, 1956 L. CRAWFORD PAINTERS GUIDE Filed Sept. 22. 1953 George L. Crawford INVENTOR.
Media. BY mm United States Patent PAINTERS GUIDE George L. Crawford, Conneaut Lake, Pa. Application September 22, 1953, Serial No. 381,693 1 Claim. (Cl. 118--504) This invention relates to a painters guide and more specifically provides a guide wherein painters may apply paint in a straight line.
An object of this invention is to provide a painters guide used in making a straight line wherever desired such as on windows, base boards and other trim work.
Another object of this invention is to provide a novel painters guide which may be easily handled, engages the painted surface in a substantial line of contact and further provides a non-smear guide.
A further object of this invention is to provide a painters guide in making a straight line when applying paint which is simple in construction, easy to manipulate, inexpensive to manufacture and efficiently performs its necessary functions.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the painters guide of this invention in operative position on a window for painting a window sash wherein the sash is being painted and paint is being prevented from contacting the window pane.
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical section taken substantially along section line 22 of Figure 1 showing details of the specific structure of the painters guide.
Referring now more specifically to the drawings, it will be seen that the numeral generally designates the painters guide of this invention and as shown in the specific embodiment used in conjunction with a window sash 12 having a window pane 14 held therein by suitable putty, or the like, 16.
The painters guide 10 is composed of an integral piece of sheet material such as sheet metal and as best seen in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings the painters guide 10 has a guide plate 18 with an angularly disposed portion 20 depending beneath the guide plate 18 for engaging the surface of the window 14 in a substantial line contact adjacent the edge of the sash 12 and putty 16 which is to be painted. The angularly disposed portion 20 is along one edge of the plate 18 and the other edge of the plate 18 is return bent at 22 and a second plate 24 is formed parallel to and engaging the upper surface of the plate 18 and the plate 24 in turn is return bent at portion 26 forming a third plate 28 which is parallel to and overlying the plate 24 and in mutually reinforcing engagement therewith over all of its area. Portion 26 is positioned on top of and at the junction of plate 18 and angularly disposed portion 20. At the edge of the plate 28 which is parallel to the return bent portion 22 the plate 28 is formed with a right angularly upstanding portion 30, a return bent 32 and a second upstanding plate 34 which is substantially parallel to the upstanding 2,754,799 Fatented July 17, 1956 plate 30 and terminates at the right angle junction between plate 28 and plate 30. As best seen in Figure l the uppermost fiat plate 28 has projecting wing-like portions 36 bent downwardly over the side edges of the plates 24 and 18 and the rear portion of the wing member 36 has a right angularly extending portion 38 and a return bent portion 48 which terminates at the junction of the portion 38 and the wing member 36 thereby forming a return bend leg which supports the plates along a line which is coincident with the return bend portion 22 and the upstanding plates 30 and 34. It will be obvious that the upstanding plates 30 and 34 form a hand grip which runs substantially the entire length of the painters guide 10 and the return bent legs 38 and 40 form supporting legs which are parallel to the hand grip and project outwardly from the side edges of the plate members 18, 24 and 28. The rear surface of the various plates and the legs are substantially Hush and the return legs 40 space the rear edge of the plates from the supporting surface 14 thereby assuring a line contact of the angularly extending portion 20.
The operation of the device will be readily understood. When it is desired to make a straight line while painting, the painters guide 10 is placed on the surface with the legs 40 against a supporting surface and the angularly off-set portion making a line contact therewith, the paint brush with paint thereon is moved along the angularly extending portion 20 and contacting the surface to be painted in an obvious manner thereby making a straight line of paint. Obviously, this device may be used in painting window sash as shown in this specific embodiment and also may be used in painting straight lines on walls, framework and various other trim work. Obviously the device may be made of any desirable length depending upon the size of the particular job in which this is used, and any suitable material such as paper, plastic, and sheet metal may be employed in its construction and other minor structural changes may be made as desired.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device, will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A painters guide comprising a sheet of material having a downwardly inclined guide plate at its front edge, an upwardly projecting flange folded upon itself and forming a hand grip at the rear edge of the sheet of material and positioned parallel to the guide plate, the central portion of the sheet of material between the guide plate and the flange being folded upon itself to form multiple mutually reinforcing layers of material throughout the entire area of said central portion and said multiple layers having a rounded front edge portion on top of and at the junction of the guide plate with said central portion of the sheet of material, and legs extending downwardly at the rear portion of the sheet of material and supporting the central portion thereof spaced from the surface of work against which the guide is placed.
