' Another object is to construct the device so I that the same may. be equally well adapted for use, as above stated, either upon a fiat surface, as for instance .in blocking out to im-' itate tile work and other decorative work, or for use in angles between surfaces such as between a window pane and sash, where the former must be covered while the adjacent faces of the sash are beingpainted,

A further object is to provide a device of this character which may be cheaply. manu factured of sheet metal by stamping out a suitable blank therefrom and bending the parts and securing them into form as by soldering the same, and providing means for preventing dripping or splashing of any excess paint or other coating over the back or sides of the device during the operation of applying said paint or coating.

A full and complete understanding of the invention may be obtained from a consideration of the following detailed description, taken in connectionwith the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification; it being understood that while the.

From the foregoing the merits of the invention will be appreciated, and itwill be seen that a simple, cheap and durable device has been provided as a guard to be used by painterswhich will greatly facilitate their work and prevent spoiling adjacent surfaces when painting.

What I claim is 1. A paint guard comprising a member having a bottom wall and opposite side walls arising therefrom and extending throughout the length of said bottom wall, the front edges of the said walls sloping rearwardly with relation to the bottom, said walls defining a paint brush receiving space, and forming three guarding walls for said brush to protect adjacent surfaces when painting, and means for raising the bottom wall to cause the front edges of the said walls to assume a vertical position when the device is resting upon a support.

2. A paint guard comprising a member having a bottom, a. handle, and opposite side walls extending upwardly from the bottom and converging toward one end, whereby the member is less in width at one end than the other, said side walls and bottom wall constituting three guarding walls between the paint brush and the surface to be protected, and means projecting from the member at the smaller end and equally from each side thereof, so as to support either side wall in rear of the larger end away from the surface to be protected.

3. A paint guard comprising a member having a bottom. an end wall. a handle, and opposite side walls arising from the bottom and extending forwardly from the end wall, the space between the side walls at the other end being open, said side walls terminating at the open end of the member, whereby the ends of the side walls and bottom at said open end are caused to bear against the surface being painted, and means for elevating the bottom above the protected surface ex cept at the open end of the member.

4. A paint guard comprising a member having a bottom, one end wall. a handle, and oppoiste side walls extending upwardly from the bottom and forwardly from the end wall, the space between the side walls at the other end being open, and a heel provided on the bottom at the closed end of the member to elevate the main portion of the bottom from the surface being protected.

5. A paint guard comprising a member having a bottomwall, an end wall and opposite side walls, the other end being open,

said member tapering toward the closed end, and a heel provided on the bottom wall at said closed end, said heel being equal in length to the widest portion of said member.

7. A paint guard comprising a bottom plate having its side edges converging from front to back, perpendicular side walls rising from the said edges, a back wall connected to the narrow end of the bottom plate and joined to the back ends of the side walls and of even height therewith, a heel member secured transversely to the underside of the bottom member at the narrow end thereof, and a handle connected to' said back wall.

8. A paint guard comprising a bottom plate with rearwardly tapering side edges and parallelfront and rear edges, perpendicular walls rising ,rom the side and rear edges thereof and ioined at their meeting edges, the front ends of the side walls sloping rearwardly with relation to the bottom, a transverselv disposed heel member car- -ried by the bottom plate and adapted to raise the back end thereof and cause the said sloping front edges of the side walls to assume a vertical position when the device is resting upon a support, and a handle connected to the back wall.

9. A paint uard comprisin a bottom plate having rearwardlv tapered side edges provided with substantially perpendicular walls. a back wall ioined to the rear narrow end of the bottom plate and also to the adiacent ed es of the side walls, a rearwardlv extending handlesocket carried by the back wall. and an anmilar heel member secured transversel to the under side of the bottom member at the narrower end ther of. said heel member being of a len th canal to the width of th front end of the bottom and extending eouallv from each side thereof.
