This invention relates .to a guide and guard especially adapted to be attached to paint brushes and the like, and has for its object the production of a simple and eicient guide and guard which may be attached to the handle of a paint brush so as to facilitate the striping or lining of a surface, so as to permit the operator of the brush to draw or paint a straight and accurate line upon a surface through ther medium of the specially designed guard and guide which is attached to the brush. l
Another object vof this invention is the production of a simple and efiicient guide which is attached to the side of a brush so as to shield thev adjacentsurface and permit the brush to only contact With the desired surface which is to be painted.
Another object of this invention is the production of a simple and eicient roller or guide which will permit the brush to be held in a steady position and drawn over a surface in order to paint straight and accurate lines.
A still further object of this invention is the Vproduction of a simple and eicient guard which may overhang the edge of a surface to be painted and permit the brush tov only contact with the desired surface Whichis to receive the paint.
' With these and other objects in View, this invention consists of certain novel ionstruction, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
-Figure 1Av is a side elevation of a brush showing the guide and guard attached thereto;
Figure 2 is an edge elevation of the brush r shown in Figure l, a portion of the brush and guide as well as guard being shown in section;
Figure 3 is a side elevation of a modified form of my invention;
Figure 4 is an edge elevation partly in section of the structure shown in Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a side elevation of a further modified form of the invention, and
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a still further modied form.
Figure '7 is a perspective view of a modied form of the invention showing the projecting ends of the guard plate rolled to overhang the side edges of the bristles of a brush.
By referring to the drawing, it will be seen that l designates the handle of the brush provided with the usual bristles 2, which are carried by the head 3 of the brush. The guide which is used in connection with the present invention preferably consists of an elongated metallic neck 4 having the end thereof turned over or overlapped as indicated at 5 through which a pin'or other suitable fastening element 6 passes for the purpose of connecting the elongated metallic neck 4 to the brush. This elongated neck 4 preferably terminates at its lower end in va flared or widened guard 7, these parts preferably being formed of sheet metal for the purpose of lightness of structure and reduction in cost of manufacture. This guard 7 is of suitable or desired width to suit the'eonvenience of the operator and is adapted to guard or shield the bristles 2 of the brush and hold theA same against lateral spreading over and 'beyond the surface rwhich is to be painted.
A wheel or protecting disc, constituting a 'guiding wheel, 8, is pivotally mounted as at9 upon the guard 7,- and preferably projects beyond the lower edge 10 ofthe guard` '7 as Vclearly shown in Figure 1, so as to permit the wheel 8 to travel over the surface which is to be painted and constitutes a support and steadying meansfor facilitating the drawing of the brush over the surface in a straight line. This disc also acts as a supplemental guard toprotect adjacent surfaces.' For instance,v in painting a floor board or trim the disc "1s run along vthe joint between the board or trim and the Wall with' the brush projecting against the edge of the board or trim andthe paint may be applied to the board in this manner without being spread onto the adjacent wall surface.
From the foregoing description it will be seen handle of the brush as well as the head 3,;and also grip the neck 4 of the guard in-order to hold the same in a proper'position so as to cause the Wheel 8 to contact with the surface over which the brush is to be drawn. Then by the operator drawing the brush over the surface, the WheelS will readily roll over or travel upon the surface and permit the bristles 2 of the brush to contact with the surface and only paint that portion of the surface over which the bristles willl be drawn. By means of this device, a very simple and eiiicient means has been produced to permit that-a very simple and eflicient meansjhas been produced whereby the operator, may gripk the an ordinary layman or unskilled Workman to draw a very accurate and straight line for the purpose of lining or' striping a painted surface.
The contact of the lwheel' with the surface over hold the samein a proper straight relation in order to insure the marking of a straight line through the medium of the bristles carrying the paint.
In Figures 3 and Ll'there is shown a modified form of the invention wherein the brush handle 11 carries the usual head 12, the head 12 supporting the usual bristles 13. A strap 14 is piv otally connected at 1.5 near the bottom of the handle 11 and extends over the head 12, and to the lower end of this strap or link 14 is pivotally connected a guard plate 16, which guard plate projects well beyond the sides of the bristles. 13. and may be swung when desiredto4 Contactv with. a surface or overhang the edge of a surface to permit a proper striping or lining` of the surface through the medium of the bristles 13. A rotatably mounted wheel 1'7v is rotatablyconnected to` the lower end or" the link or strap 14 asindicated at 18, and this wheel 17 projects beyondthe lower surface 195 of the guard plate 16. The
lower corner edges. of: the guard plate 12 are curvedv as indicated at 20. to. permit the guard plate to easily slide over a surface shouldv the plate 16 become swung uponl itsl pivot and come in contact; with the surface over'which the brush is moved. L
In Figure 5' thereis shown a further. modified I iormof the inventionwhereinxthe guardi com,-
prises van elongated neck 21: which is pivotally connectedv as; indicated?` at 22, 'tothehandle 23 of the brush'. The head-.24 of the` brush` carries a pin or other suitable fastening means 25 which piny passes through a slot 26 formed in the elongated neck of the guard' 21. Withthis form of` the. device, .the pivotal-connection 22 may, if desired, be omitted and the guard swung or supported; on the pivot or screwl 25. Thislpermits the adjustment of theguard longitudinally of the brushin order to. regulate the distance which` the bristles'project beyond the guard. This guard 21 isprovided with a laterally iiared lower endf2'1,
one end- .thereof ,alongI the. lower edge being off-set Y as-indioated at 28 to constituteasliding. shoe to grip or engage the surface over whichv the brush is, drawn' and this lower edge 28v ispreferably on a'linewith thelower edge 29 of the guide,v Ywheel 30;. This guide wheel 30r is pivotallyniounted upon a suitablepiny 31. The guard, at its. lower ared ends 27, is extended beyond the sides` of the bristles of theV brush asy clearly illustrated in v Figure. 5.
In- F-igur.e. 6 there is shown a further modified lfor-.rrr ot the invention, the brushI being shown in dotted lines This. guard as illustrated comprises an elongated. strap 32I which is provided with an aperture 33. at the upper endy for the purposey of permitting the `attachment or the strap 32 to the handle of the brush. A suitable notch 34 is formed intermediate. the ends of the strap 32'and isadapted to receive a pin for locking the strapV 32 ina set position. against swinging movement upon the. brush.. The lower end of the strap 32 carries alaterally extending guard plate 35 which is pivotally connected tothe lower end` of the strap 32 and is provided with. projecting ends 3.6 whichy are adapted to project .beyond the sides of. the4 bristles of the. brush. A` guide wheel 37 ispivotally. secured upon the pin 38 which also passes through thegguard plate 35,- andthe lower portion 39 ci the guide wheel 37 projects. prefera-bly below the ,lower edge of the guard plate 35;. TlflerguardY plate 35 however, may be swung to engagetheside edge of the surface over'Wh-ich the brush mayl be;A drawn,
.i'lyf painted through the medium of the device illustrated. As, shown in Figure 4 a special guide may be placed upon either side of the brush and inv allthe structures illustrated,l the guide and guard maybe duplicated so as to mount one on each side of the brush so as to cause the bristles to passi between a pair of parallel guards and guide wheels.- It should further be understood that certain detail changes'. in; the-f mechanical construction. may be: employed without departingv from. the spirit' offthe; invention. so long as these` changes fall within the. scope ci the. ap.- pended claims..
As-.shownin Figurey '7; the. ends 40. off the guard plate 41 may be bent'. around' the sides1ofthe bristles: of' the. brush, and` the. guard plate-may be. so constructed as to. havev onev or both@ of: its
ends bent so as to overhangtheside. e'd'gesiot the bristles. n
