UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
WARREN T. REASER, OF MADISON, WISCONSIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,6?8, dated June 8, 1880.
Application tiled April 22, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WARREN T. REAsEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Madison, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I do h'ereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suoli as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l represents a longitudinal section of my improved buckle and double-looped strap to which it is attached; Fig. 2, a top plan of the same. Fig. 3 is a top or plan of the buckle with the strap removed. Y
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the class of harnessbuckles having the tongue reversed in position or pivoted to one of the end bars ot' the buckle-frame, and more particularly to improvements upon my former patent, dated April 11, 1876, and numbered 176,053, and in which a central cross-bar is provided with a stud, which constitutes the means for securin g one end ot' the strap to which the buckle is applied, and also supporting the free end of the tongue which passes through the free end of the strap.
The object of my present invention is to provide a buckle by which I can form a loop at each end of the buckle from a single strap without sewing, and have the strain come on the base or root of the tongue, while the free end of the tongue will press directly on the two parts of the strap and hold them trmly on the stud which secures them to the buckle; and to this end the invention consists in a novel construction of buckle, all as will be hereinafter fully described.
In the drawings, A represents the frame of the buckle, and B the reversed tongue pivoted to one of the end bars, a, of the buckle-frame.
C represents a cross-bar arranged near the center, but dropped below the main portion of the buckle-frame, and which is provided with an upwardly-projecting stud, E, having a vertical slot, c, therein, opening toward and receiving the free end of the pivoted tongue B.
The two ends of the strap F are passed between the bar C and the end bars, a, and are seemed by the stud E, which passes through a hole in both ends ofthe strap. The tongue B passes through the outer end portioinf, ot' the strap, while theinner end portion,g, thereof only extends around the inside of the looped portion G, or around inside ot' the snap-hook,
so that the wear from said hook comes on the end portion g, instead of the main portion ot' the strap.
By the above described construction of buckle the strain ot' the strap comes on the root or base of the tongue, so that the free end ofthe tongue rests or presses directly on the two ends or parts ot' the strap, thus holding them rmly in position, and thereby preventing them from slipping off' the stud.
Having thus fullyr described 1nyinventio1'1,I do not wish to be understood as claiming, broadly, anything shown in my former patent before referred to 5 but What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described buckle, having a ccntral cross-bar, O, provided with an upwardlyprojecting stud, E, having a slot, c, in its end and a reverse tongue, B, pvoted to one of the end bars of the buckle-frame, with its free end fitting in said slotted stud, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
In testimony whcreof I afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
E. A. HAYES, l JAY O. HAYES.
