Description

June 16, 1942. E. WALLACE HAIR TRIMMIN'G: GUIDE FOR DRY SHAVEHS' Filed April 9 1941 IHIIHHHHIIIlllllllllllll' INVENTOR. LEWIS E. WALLACE BY Patented June 16, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HAIR TRIMMING GUIDE FOR DRY SHAVERS Lewis E. Wallace, Whittier, Calif.
Application April 9, 1941, Serial No. 387,557
9 Claims.
This invention relates to hair trimming guides for dry shavers.
The general object of the invention is to provide a novel attachment for a dry shaver which will enable an operator to neatly trim his hair.
Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment for a dry shaver including a supporting member and spaced loop members which are adapted to engage the head to thereby hold the cutting member in spaced relation to the head.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hair trimming guide for a dry shaver wherein the guide includes a pair of members each of which is movable from an operative to an inoperative position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a dry shaver having a chamber at each end of the cutting member and with a closure for the chamber and wherein each chamber includes a a hair trimming guide movable from an inoperative position within the chamber to an operative position without the chamber.
Other objects and the advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary plan view showing a dry shaver with my invention applied thereto:
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary central sectional view showing the device in two positions;
Fig. 3 is an end view of the shaver with the end closure in open position and with the guide in raised position;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 with the guide in lowered position;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view showing a modification;
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary side elevation showing the modification; and
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary end view similar to Fig. 3 showing a modified guide member.
Referring to the drawing by reference characters, I have shown my invention as embodied in a dry shaver which is indicated generally at I 0. As shown, the dry shaver includes a-body H having a cutter head [2 mounted thereon. The cutter head may be of any suitable character and may be operated as by a motor (not shown) in the body ll.
At each end the body is provided with a closure I3 which is mounted on a pintle pin l4. Each pintle pin is supported on a bracket l5 which includes an aperture l6 through which a fastening screw l1 extends. A look nut I8 serves to hold the parts assembled.
The closures l3 are hollow and form pockets with the adjacent ends of the body ll. Each bracket I5 includes an ear l9 engageable by a pin 20 on the associated closure to thus hold the closure in closed position.
The closures I3 and their securing means form no part of the present invention.
Mounted on each of the screws I1 I show a guide support 2| which forms a part of my invention. Each support 2| includes a slot 22 which receives the shank of the screw I! so that the support may be adjusted along the screw and will be held in place when the screw is tightened.
Each support 2| includes 'a loop portion 23 at its upper end and this loop portion receives the ends 24 of my hair trimming guides 25. Each of theseguides includes the ends 24, previously mentioned, sides 26 and a circular loop portion 21; The hair trimming guides are moveable from the lowered position shown in Fig. 4 and at the left in Fig. 2 to the raised position shown in Fig. 3 and at the right in Fig. 2. When the guides are lowered, they are adapted to be covered by the closures l3 and thus held out of service position.
In assembly, the supports H are arranged in the correct position and the screws I! are tightened. For ordinary shaving operation, the dry shaver is operated with the guides within the closures l3. When the operator desires to use the shaver for trimming the hair, the closures are opened and the guides are moved outwardly after which the closures are moved to closed position. When the shaver is moved, for instance, over the back of the neck, the loop portions 21 of the guides 25 will engage the head and thus hold the cutting head l2 away from the persons head. The distance the cutting head is spaced from the head determines the length of the hair which is out.
When the dry shaver is held with its longitudinal axis perpendicular to the persons head the cutting portion of the cutting head I2 is held at a maximum from the persons head and thus the hair is cut to a maximum length. At the dry shaver is tilted so that its longitudinal axis moves from the perpendicular, the sides of the loop 21 will engage the persons head. The distance from the sides of the loops 21 to the cutting head is less in this position, and as a result the hair will be cut shorter than when the dry shaver is held perpendicular to the persons head. This tilting action is performed by the hand of the operator and is guided by the eye.
In Figs. and 6 I show a modification of my invention wherein the shaver indicated generally at 30 is of a slightly different type from that previously described. The shaver includes a cutting head 3! having grooves 32 at opposite sides thereof. A guide member indicated generally at 33 includes a pair of parallel, elongated, base members 34 with a loop 35 at each end thereof and integral therewith. The loops are perpendicular to the plane passing through the axes of the base members. The guide member 33 is made of somewhat resilient material so that the base members may be sprung slightly apart and inserted in the grooves 32 and after release they will hold their position.
In Fig. 7 I show a modification of my inven tion wherein the shaver, indicated generally at 40, is shown as of the type as disclosed-in; Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive and includes a body 4| having end closures 42 mounted similar to the manner in which the closures I3, previously described, are mounted. Each mounting in the further modification includes a" screw 43 which engages man'- aperture'in a flat support member 44; The support member has a rolled bead 45' at each edge thereof which is hollow and which receives arms 46 on a guide member indicated generally at 47. The arms 46 of the guide members are connected by' a loop-48;
In the use'ofthe further modification the loop' member may bemoved from a lowered to a raised operative position by sliding the arms M5 inthe beads 35 until the loop assumes the correct position.
From the foregoing description it would be apparent that I have invented a novel hair trimming guide for dry shavers which can be economically manufactured'and which is highly efiicient for its intended purpose.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1-. In a device of the'class described, a shaver including a bodyhaving. a cutting head and having a hair cutting guide member at each end of the cutting head, each. of said guide members including a circular loop extending laterally beyond' the sides of" the cutting head, the axes of said'loops being disposed above the cutting head, each guide member including an' attaching portion: remote from the loop and means to secure said attachingportions to' the shaver body.
2. In a device'of the class described, a shaver including a body having a" cutting head, a support adjustably secured-at each end of the head, a guide member pivoted to each support, each guidemember including a loop, saidloops being moveable to locations above and at opposite ends of the cutting head;
3.
