June 2, 1942. A. A. BUREAU I LAGGING FOR REEDSl Filed sept. 12, 1940 Arm/wir Patented June 2,y 1942 I LAGGING FOR REELS Arthur A. Bureau, Chicago, Ill., assignor to Western Electric Company, Incorporated, New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York i Application september 12, 1940, serial No. 356,446
` claims. `(c1. 20s-59) This invention relates to lagging for reels, and particularly to lagging for reels used for storing and transporting heavy material, such as lead covered cable.
An object of the present invention is the provision of lagging whichis of the required structural strength, economical to manufacture, and durable in service. i
In accordance with theabove object, one embodiment of the invention contemplates metal lagging lcomprising a series of sheet metal channel box-like lags placed side by side across the outer peripheries or rims ofspaced metal reel heads to form a complete enclosure `of the cable storage space of the reel. Each individual lag is formed from a suitably shaped integral blank subsequently pressed' into Va box-like structure having two thicknesses of metal throughout the width and'length of the side arms, the metal of the arms being bent `inwardly and provided with rounded edges which rest upon the peripheral surfaces of the spaced head rims and extend from one outer peripheral edge to the other of the rims. The edges' of the inner thicknesses of metal of the side arms abut the inner surface of the web i connecting the side arms. The ends of the web are provided with bent over portions welded to the inner end edges `of the side arms which serve toclose up the ends ofthe channel and freely extend slightly within the peripheral surfaces of n be wound thereon. The cable reel itself may be the rims at their outer edges, thus preventingY longitudinal shifting of the lag when positioned on the reel heads. Tensioned steel retaining bands extending around the enclosing lags and retained under tension serve to secure the lagging to the reel.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will more fully appear from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a fragmentary View in side elevation of a metal cable reel provided with the improved lagging of this invention;
Fig. 2 is an .enlarged vertical section taken on the line 2--2 of Fig. l;
of any suitable construction, although a welded all-metal construction is preferred. In the construction illustrated, the heads each comprise an inner annular channel member I3, an outer annular rim I4 concentric therewith, channel spokes.
I5 extending between the inner annular member and the rim and welded thereto, and an annular metallicV disc or head sheet I6 welded to the spokes on the side'facing the drum.
The spokes are notched at their outer ends, as
shown in Fig. 2, to receive outwardly turned outer fianges I1 of the head' sheets, which may be welded to the under side'of the rims I 4. The spokes 'are also notched at their inner ends to receive the ends of the drum il and outwardly turned'inner flanges 2| of the head sheets, which together Vwith the drum, may be welded to the annular channel I3. The improved metal lagging embodying the invention comprises a plurality of channel boxlike type lags 25 of uniform size and construction and sufficient in number so that when placed side by side on the rims i4 and lengthwise across the width of the reel, as shown in Figs. l and 2, a complete covering or enclosure is provided for the cable storage space of `the reel. To form the lag 25 a suitably shaped blank is firstv punched from sheet metal and then formed in a number of pressing operations into a channel box-like type' structure shown` in perspective in Fig. 4 and in detail in Figs. 2 and 3.
Each lag 25 comprises a at webV portion 26 interconnecting depending side arms or flanges 21 each having two thicknesses of metal throughout their width and length. The inner thickness of metal in each side armis formed by providing extensions of sufficient depth in the side arm portions of the blank and then bending such extension inwardly along a line substantially midway of its depth until it lies flat against the outer thickness of metal and abuts the inner surface of the web 26. An outer rounded edge 28 is thus formed along the bending line of the two thicknesses of metal in the side arms 21 which edges at their opposite ends rest upon the peripheral surfaces of the spaced reel head rims I4. End walls 30 for the channel box-like lag 25 are formed by providing extensions of sufficient length at the ends of the web portion of the blank and then bending such extensions inwardly to abut the end edges of the side arms 21after which they are welded, as indicated at 3|, t0 the inner end edges of the side arms 21, thus connecting the side arms and increasing the rigidity of the lag. The end walls 30 are of such depth that they extend past the rounded edges 28 of the side arms 21 which rest upon the peripheral surfaces of the reel head rims I4 and slightly within the latter surfaces, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 at 32. The extensions of the end walls 30 at'32 serve to prevent longitudinal shifting of the lag when positioned on the reel heads. To retain the improved reel lags in place on and encircling the reel metallic bands 33 are provided which are suitably tensioned and tied by a member 34 secured to overlapping ends of the bands.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specic embodiment herein illustrated and described except insofar as is defined by the appended claims.
