In accordance with an important feature of the present invention, the strength of the lags 25 and their resistance to impact stresses are increased substantially without increasing materially the weight of the lags. This is accomplished by reinforcing the rim engaging end portions of the lags by increasing the wall thickness thereof, preferably by inserting and welding within the end portions a filler or gusset 30 in the form of a short metallic channel member of a cross-section conforming to the cross-section of the notched end portions of the lags. Each reinforcing gusset or channel member 30 comprises a web portion 3| and a pair of depending side arms or flanges 32, 32. The dimensions are such that the reinforcing channel fits fairly snugly Within the notched end portions of the lags, where it may be secured, for example, by spot welding, as indicated at 34 (Fig. 3). It will be noted that the bottom edges of the flanges 32 of the reinforcing channels are flush with the bottom edges of the notched end portions of the lag anges. Thus, the durability and strength of the lags are materially increased and their resistance to impact stresses, such as are encountered in normal service, is substantially increased, particularly at the rim engaging portions of the lags where the greatest strength is required.
Each of the reinforcing channels 3U may be formed with a vertical wall portion 33, preferably formed integral with the web portion 3| and depending therefrom, as illustrated in the draw- This vertical wall 33 serves as a closure for preventing cinders, stones, etc., from entering the cable storage space of the reel through the otherwise open ends of the lags. In order that the lag flanges may not be restrained from spreading slightly when under pressure so as to distribute the load over a plurality of lags, the vertical wall portion 33 of the reinforcing channel is preferably not secured to the lag anges along their adjoining edges. Also, in the preferred construction, shown in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, the height of the wall portion 33 is slightly less than the fianges 32 of the reinforcing channel so that sufficient clearance is provided between the rims of the reel heads and the bottom edge of the wall portion 33 to permit a free spreading movement of the lag flanges.
In the alternative construction shown in Fig. 6. the lag projects slightly beyond the outside edge of the rim I4, so that the vertical wall portion 33 of the reinforcing channel 30 can be extended inwardly beyond the peripheral surface of the rim on the outer end surface thereof, as shown.
The improved lags are adapted t be held in place on the reel by metallic bands 36 which are received in transverse retaining notches 35 formed in the outer surfaces of the lags.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific embodiments thereof herein illustrated and described except insofar as is defined by the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
l. A cable reel comprising spaced heads, a drum connected therebetween, and a plurality of sheet metal lags of channel cross-section extending between said heads and having the free edges of their flanges in contact with the peripheral surfaces of said heads, each of said lags having a metallic reinforcing member of channel crosssection welded within each end thereof with the web and ange portions of the reinforcing members in contact with the web and flange portions, respectively, of the lags, each of said reinforcing members having a flap portion depending from its web portion for closing the ends of the lags.
2. A lag for a cable reel having spaced heads, comprising a sheet metal channel member adapted to span said heads and attachable thereto with the free edges of the flange portions at one end of said channel member in contact with the peripheral surface of one of said heads, and reinforcing means secured within said end of said channel member, said reinforcing means comprising a sheet metal liner of channel cross section having a web portion contacting and welded to the web portion of the channel member and ange portions contacting and welded to the corresponding flange portions of the channel member, the said liner having a flap portion depending from its web portion for closing the said end of the channel member.
