Description

Nov. 20, 1934. A. A. BUREAU El AL RE EL Filed Aug. 9, 1930 a W W; W {AW Patented Nov. 20, 1934 UNITED STATES REEL" Arthur A. Bureau and Ralph W. Clemmons, Chicago, Ill., assignors, by direct and mesne assignments, to Western Electric Company, Incorporated, New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application August 9, 1930, Serial No. 474,103
4 Claims.
This invention relates to reels, and more particularly to cable reels provided with enclosing elements.
An object of the invention is the provision of a durable reel having the greatest degree of strength commensurate with its weight, and provided with enclosing means for protecting material supported by the reel.
In accordance with one embodiment, the invention contemplates the provision of a metallic reel comprised of spaced heads and a flanged drum positioned between and secured to the heads, and a metallic enclosing member comprised of a plurality of arcuate metallic sections having circumferentially extending corrugations, the sections being depressed intermediate their edges to position the corrugations thereof inwardly of the periphery of the heads when they are secured in place upon the heads. The sections of the metallic enclosing member are bolted to the heads and when so positioned the reel is supported by the peripheries of the heads rather than upon the metallic enclosing members.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a consideration of the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, wherein Fig. 1 is a fragmentary side elevational view of a cable reel embodying the features of the invention;
Fig. 2 is an end view of the reel shown in Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows 2-2 shown in Fig. l, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 showing the metallic enclosing members in detail.
Referring now to drawing wherein like reference characters designate the same parts throughout the several views, the reel, designated generally by the numeral 1, is composed of a pair of heads 2 and 3, spaced apart by a drum 4, each head being made up of a metallic disk 5 to which are secured, as by welding, a suitable number of reinforcing ribs 6 which extend radially from the hub 7, and which are rigidly held in position adjacent their outer ends by reinforcing angle bars or trusses 8 interposed between adjacent ribs. A circular channel member 9 is secured to the outer ends of the ribs 6, reinforcing angle bars or trusses 8, and the disks 5. A reel of the type briefly described above, which is the preferred type for use with the enclosing members to be described later, forms the subject matter of copending application of Arthur A. Bureau, Serial No. 474,102, filed Aug.
9, 1930, and is described in detail in said application.
The reel 1 is provided with enclosing members or sectional lags 12 of which, in the particular embodiment being described herein, there are four of equal length. The lags or enclosing members 12 are formed of sheet metal circumferentially corrugated as shown in Fig. 3 and formed in arcuate sections as shown in Fig. 1 on diameters approximating that of the reel to be enclosed. A plurality of equally spaced apertures 13 are formed in the lags 12 and are adapted to receive bolts 14 which pass through the circular channel members 9 and the reinforcing angle bars 8, being secured in place by means of nuts 15. The lags are arcuately shaped and corrugated as shown in Fig. 3 in the direction of their length, the corrugations being depressed below the outer periph- I eral surface of the heads so as to prevent the weight of the reel from resting upon the lags, thereby preventing damage thereto while the reel rests or is rolled upon a substantially even surface. However, the lags provide adequate protection for the material, such as a cable 1'7, positioned upon and supported by the reel when any inequalities occur in the surface upon which the reel rests or is rolled, particularly because the lags completely enclose the cable, being overlapped as shown at 18 (Figs. 1 and 2).
The circumferentially extending corrugations in the enclosing members 12 are provided so that during transportation of a disassembled reel the lagging will not be deformed. The circular formation of the lags will prevent their bending when a. stress is applied thereto in one direction and the circumferentially extending corrugations will prevent the deforming of them when stress is applied to them in another direction.
Although a particular and specific embodiment of the invention has been described hereinbefore, it will be understood that the scope thereof is to be limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In a reel, a pair of spaced heads, a drum positioned therebetween, a plurality of enclosing members secured to the peripheral surfaces of the heads, said members being provided with corrugations extending in the direction of their length, and nut and bolt assemblies serving to secure the members to the peripheral surfaces of the heads.
2. In a reel having a pair of spaced heads comprised of radially extending ribs, a circular shaped channel member fixed to the outer ends of the 1 4. A reel comprising spaced heads, a drum interconnecting said heads, and an enclosure comprising a plurality of curved sheet metal sections supported by the heads and being corrugated in the direction of the circumference of the reel,the body portion of each of said sections being depressed below the edges which rest on the heads.
