This invention relates to reels, and more particularly to all metallic reels for. supporting material susceptible of being wound thereon.
An object of this invention is to provide a strong and durable metallic reel of a simple and efficient design having the least possible weight consistent with its strength.
In accordance with one embodiment, the invention contemplates the provision of a reel composed of a pair of metallic heads formed with the surfaces thereof fluted or channeled radially across their entire width, a drum secured between the heads by bolts extending between the heads and passing through apertures in the flanges of the drum, and a pair of circular channel members having their flanges extending outwardly and inwardly, respectively, welded to the inner "and outer edges of the fluted heads. Small channel members are welded to the heads in the radial channels thereof at the points where the bolts pass therethrough to reinforce the heads.
Other novel features and advantages of the invention will become apparent in the V in conjunction with the accompanyingdraw following detailed description when taken ings, wherein Fig. 1 is a side elevational View of a reel to form them 1nto the segments. After the segments have beenso channeled or fluted,

A pair of annular channel members 16 and 17 are welded to the inner and outer peripheral surfaces of the annular disks as shown at 18 and 19, respectively, with their flanges extending outwardly and inwardly, respectively. The depressed-portions 12 are bent slightly out of their normal alignment at their inner and outer edges as shown at 20 and 21, respectively, so. that when the 'channel members 16 and 17 are welded in place thereon the inner surfaces of the heads will present a smooth surface.
- After the channel members 16 and 17 have been so welded to the heads, short channel members {23 are. welded in the depressed portions 12 adjacent their inner edges as shown at 24 to act as reinforcing members for bolts 26 which are passed through apertures 27, 28, and 29 formed in the short channel members 23, the depressed portion 12, and in a flange 30 of a flanged drum 31, respectively. The flanged drum 31 extends between the heads and serves to space them apart a predetermined distance and is attached to both of. the heads in the manner shown in Fig. 2. The bolts 26 extend between the heads and serve to compress and position the drum 31 therebetween. The drum is provided with a suitable aperture 34 for receiving the forward end of a cable to be wound thereon.
Referring now to Figs. 4 and 5 wherein a modified embodiment of the invention is shown, the numeral 32 indicates one of a pair of annular angle members which are secured to the heads by means of bolt and nut assemblies 33 and which support a drum 36, which in this particular embodiment is not provided with flanges such as those indicated by the numeral 30 in the preferred embodiment of the invention. The angle members 32 in this embodiment of the invention described support the drum 36 and prevent lateral movement thereof. The heads of the reel in this embodiment of the invention are spaced apart by the drum, and bolts 37,.similar to the bolts 26 shown in Fig. 2, compress the drum between the heads.
Fig. 6 shows a further modification ofthe invention wherein the angle members 32 are welded at 38 and 39 to the annular channel member 16 and to the depressed portions 12 of the head. The drum 36 in this embodiment of the invention is held in position by bolts 37. which compress the drum between the heads in the same manner as described in connection with the other embodiments of the invention.
, In some instances it is desirable to mount reels of this type upon reel stands so that cable wound thereon may be drawn therefrom for insertion in cable conduits. This necessity of unwinding material from the reel, sometimes occurs in the field and at such times the reels are rotated about their axis and the cable fed from the reel directly into conduits.
In order to facilitate the removal of material from the reel there is provided a pair of spiders 42 which may be positioned adjacent the reel heads on each side of the drum. These spiders consist of radial arms 43, 44,
'45 and 46 which are formed integral and have a substantially U-shaped cross section. At the junction point 47 of the arms 43, 44, 45, and 46 apertures 48 are formed to receive the rod or shaft of a reel stand about which the reel is to be rotated. The outer ends of the arms are provided with apertures 49 through which the bolts 26 may be passed to hold the spider in place and bent as shown at 50 to engage the reel heads, lugs 55 being provided on the drum to prevent axial movement of-the spiders.
In the modification shown in Fig. 8 the spiders are at the outer ends of the arms provided with L-shaped slots 51 and, bent as shown at 50. This construction permits the bent portions of the arms to engage the inner surface of the heads and the edges of the slots to engage the bolts 26. Thus the spider 42 may be inserted in the reel and held in place by the bolts 26 and the insertion or removal of the spiders may be effected with great ease.
Although the invention has been described specifically, it is to be understood that it is not limited except by the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A reel comprising a plurality of fluted metal sections welded together to form a pair of heads, a flanged drum positioned between the heads, channel members secured to the inner and outer edges of the heads, and a plurality of bolts extending between the heads and passing through apertures in the flanges of the drum to secure the drum in place between the heads.
2. A reel comprising a pair of sheet metal heads channeled radially across their entire width and having apertures formed therein, a flanged drum having apertures therein in a location corresponding to the apertures in the channeled heads, reinforcing channel members positioned in the channels of the head and provided with apertures for association with the apertures in the channel heads, and a plurality of bolts extending between the heads and passing through the apertures in the reinforcing members, the heads, and the flanges of the drum to secure the assembled heads and drum in place.
3. A reel comprising a pair of sheet metal heads channeled radially across their entire Width, channel stiffening members secured to the inner and outer edges of the heads, a plurality of annular reinforcing angle members secured to the heads adjacent their inner edges, a drum positioned between the heads, and a plurality of bolts extending between the heads to secure the heads and the drum in a predetermined relation, and bearing against the reinforcing members.
4. A reel comprising a plurality of metal sections, each section being fluted radially across its entire width and the sections being welded together to form a pair of heads, a plurality of annular angle members secured to the inner surfaces of the heads adjacent their inner edges, a drum supported by the angle members for spacing the heads, and a plurality ofbolts extending through the heads for maintaining the heads in association with the drum.
5. A reel comprising a pair of heads fluted radially across their entire width, a plurality of annular angle members welded to the heads adjacent their inner edges, a drum supported by the angle members for spacing the heads, and a plurality of bolts extending through the heads for positioning the heads and drum in a predetermined relation.
.6. A reel comprising a pair of spaced heads and a drum positioned therebetween, said heads being radially fluted at their peripheries and the inner surfaces of the heads having plane faces provided with indentations adjacent their outer edges, and reinforcing members encircling the outer edges of said faces and having portions seated in the indentations so as to lie flush with said plane faces.
7. A reel comprising a drum, a pair of heads secured to opposite ends thereof and provided with axial openings, and flanged members secured to the inner and outer edges of the heads with their flanges extending radially respectively outwardly and inwardly.
8. A reel comprising a drum, a pair of metallic heads secured to opposite ends thereof and provided with openings therein, said heads being fluted radially, and channel members welded to the inner and outer edges of the heads.
9. A reel comprising a drum, a pair of metallic heads secured to opposite ends thereofand provided with openings therein, said heads being fluted radially across their entire width, and annular reinforcing members contacting with the inner and outer edges of the heads and secured to the fluted portions thereof.
