, 11 claims. (c1. r242-123) The invention pertains to spools or reels of the type embodying a cylindrical body usually constructed of sheet metal and having heads at opposite ends, also preferably constructed of sheet-metal.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a spool of this character in which the heads are secured on the ends of the tubular body in a manner such as to lend strength and rigidity to the connection as well as to present a neat appearance.
A common method of fastening a spool h'ead on the end of a tubular body consists in providing on the end of the body a plurality of lugs or tabs bent into transverse 'relation to the body and engaging with the head to secure it in position on the body. The present invention involves such a method of fastening a head on the body, and a further and more specific object thereof is to provide an improved method of fastening involving the provision on the head of an annulus in the form of a fold adapted to receive the fasteningk lugs in interengaging relation therewith, thereby securing the head rmly in position and at the same timeconcealing the lugs.
The objects of the invention thus generally set forth, together with other and ancillary advantages are attained by the construction and arrangement illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the spool with one end portion shown in longitudinal section to illustrate the construction employed.

The spool comprises a tubular` body 7 having heads 8 secured at opposite ends thereof. 'Ihe lbody 'l is formed from a fiat sheet of metal bent into cylindrical form and cut at opposite ends to form tabs or lugs 9 spaced a short distance apart in a circular series. As shown in Fig. 1, each head preferably includes a pair of circular plates or disks 10 and 11 encircling the body and having their peripheral edge portions interlocked.

Referring rst to the construction shown in Fig. 1, the disk'10 constitutes a backing plate for the disk 11 which thus forms a face plate, and the head further includes an annulus 13 adapted for interengagement with the lugs 9 after pass- 60 ing through the circular series of slots 14 in the backing disk 10.
The annulus 13 is in the form of a fold, one leg of which is formed integral with the face plate 11 and the other` leg of which is ,formed integral with an end closure plate or disk 115 for the body 7. The annulus'thus formed is bent, preferably, radially outwardly together with the lugs 9 engaged therein, into transverse relation to the body, thus serving not only to conceal the lugs but to insure a strong and rigid connection with the body. l
The backing plate 10 may, if desired, be extended inwardly within the body to form an integral reinforcing plate- 16 in underlying rela- 75 tion to the end plate 15, and both of said plates may be centrally apertured to receive the end of a central core 17, which latter is flanged outward- 1y into engagement with the plate 15.
The face plate 11 of the head may be constructed to provide a raised central portion 18 in spaced relation to the backing plate 10 and providing a flat label-receiving surface preferably coplanar with the curl 12 and terminal face of the annulus 13; and the plate 16 Within the body may be formed with an annular depression 19 to form a groove to receive a driving pin (not shown) which may be entered through an aperture 20 formed in the end closureplate 15 in registration with thegroove. y
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4, the backing plate 10' and face plate 11 are both provided With a circular series of slots to permit the passage therethrough of lugs 9', and the 95 plates are held in' spaced relation by means of a spacer ring 21 having notches 22 to receive the lugs 9'. The outer peripheral edges of the plates are interlocked by coacting curls 12.
In this instance the head also includes a separately formed end closure plate 23 with which the annulus 13' is formed integral. The outer free leg of the annulus is clamped between the face plate 11 and the lugs 9' when the annulus, together with the lugs, are bent into transverse relation to the body. The end plate -23 is centrally apertured to receive the end of a central core 17', the latter having an outturned ange engaging with the peripheral edge portionof the end plate.

A spool comprising a tubular body having a pluralityof lugs projecting from one end thereof, and a head for the body comprising a l face plate and a backing plate both encircling the body and projecting radially therefrom, an end closure plate for .the body, a tubular core disposed centrally of the body, said end closure plate being centrally apertured to receive the end of said core, a reinforcing plate formed in- A tegral with the backingplate and also centrally apertured to receive said core, and an annulus formed integral with said end closure plate, said annulus being in the form of a fold adapted to receive said lugs and being bent together with l said lugs into transverse relation to the body.

A spool comprising a tubular body having a plurality of lugs projecting from one end thereof, and a head for the body comprising a face plate and a backing plate both encircling A the body and projecting radially therefrom, an 115 Aend closure plate ior the body, a tubular core disposed centrally of the body, said end closure plate being centrally apertured to receive the end or said core, a reinforcing plate formed integral with the backing plate and also centrally apertured to receive said core, and an'annulus in the form of a fold having opposed legs respectively formed integral with said lace plate and said end closure plate, said lugs being entered between said legs ol the annulus and clamped therebetween.
10., A spool comprising a tubular body having a plurality of lugs projecting from one end thereof, and a head comprising a lace plate and a backing plate encircling the body and having portions projecting radially from the body in spaced relation, said head further comprising a sheet metal annulus in the form of a fold adapted to receive said lugs and bent into interengaging relation with said lugs so as to conceal the same and hold the head against movement axially of the body.

A. spool comprising a tubular body formed oi' sheet metal and having one end cut to provide a plurality of spaced lugs, a head plate having a plurality of slotstherein through which said lugs project, and a clamping device in the form of a'fold into which said lugs are entered, said lugs being bent transversely of -the body Lwith one of the legs of said fold directly engaging 14154 the upper sides of said bent lugsand the other leg of the fold interposed between the lugs andthe head plate and engaging the under sides ,of the lugs.
