2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in presses of the type embodying a crown, a bed and a slide reciprocable toward and away from the bed, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide in a press of this character improved means for guiding the slide in its movement.
In presses of this character as now generally constructed the guiding means for the slide are usually a portion of the uprights and of necessity are limited in height when they are so constructed as they cannot reach beyond the lower surface of the crown.
Furthermore when a hollow frame construction is employed there are certain weaknesses when the gibs are on the hollow uprights.
It is therefore one of the objects of the present invention to provide guiding means for the slide which are located at a considerable distance away from the surface of the slide to which the dies are attached, and in so doing provide guiding means in addition to the usual guiding means. It is well known that the further away the guides can be located from the bottom surface of the slide the more accurate they will be and the parallelism of the slide under off-center pressures will be more easily maintained.
A further object is to provide additional guiding means in the form of gibs that may be readily adjusted and which will not be limited in height.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in substantially the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereiafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings illustrating this invention, and in which Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation, partly broken away and partly in section of a press constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 2-2 Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view on an enlarged scale, partly broken away, and partly in section of one of the adjustable guides or gibs.
Figure 4 is a detail horizontal sectional view taken on line 4-4 Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 55 Figure 6.
Figure 6 is a vertical detail sectional view of the slide.
In the present exemplification of the invention the press is of a sectional construction and consists essentially of a base In having a bed H upon which rests a bed plate l2.
Rising above the base H] are hollow uprights l3 and supported by these. uprights is a crown l4, these parts being tied or fastened together by means of tie rods IE to the ends of which may be secured nuts or collars l6.
Reciprocable between the uprights I3 is a slide IT, to the bottom face of which may be secured an operating die.
The slide may be provided with surfaces [8 which contact and move upon gibs 19 that in turn may be secured in position and upon the uprights 13 by means of suitable fastening bolts 28. In each of the uprights l3 there is provided a space 2| having open sides through which the respective ends or extremities 22 of the slide project and in which space said ends reciprocate.
Any suitable means may be provided for reciprocating the slide, such as a shaft 23 journaled in bearings 24 in the base l0 and which shaft extends across the base. This shaft is provided with eccentric portions 25 one being preferably located in alinement with each of the uprights 13, the shaft being rotated in any suitable manner and from any suitable source of power, preferably through the medium of a drive pulley 25 secured thereto.
Co-operating with each of the eccentrics 25 is a link or eccentric strap 21, the free end of each of which is provided with a bearing 28 in each of which bearings an eccentric 29 operates. The eccentrics 29 are connected with a shaft 30 which is journaled in suitable bearings 3| in the slide Upon rotation of the shaft 23 a reciprocatory movement will be imparted to the slide I! through the medium of the various eccentrics and eccentric straps.
In order to vary the path of movement of the slide I! with respect to the base In while the ex-- tent of reciprocation of the slide remains constant, the shaft 30 may be rotated so as to rotate the eccentrics 29 and thereby vary their position within the respective bearings 23. This may be accomplished in any suitable manner such as by means of a worm gear 32 secured to the shaft 30 and with which worm gear a worm 33 meshes, the worm 33 being carried by a shaft 34 journaled in bearings 35 in the slide.
The end of the shaft 34 may be angular in cross-section, as at 36, for the reception of a crank or other implement; through the medium of which the shaft 34 may be rotated. Upon rotation of this shaft it will be manifest that the clined surface 42 fits within the channel 40 and the inclined surface 42 of the gib contacts the v inclined surface 41* of the channel 40, the sides of the channel serving as a means for-'assi'stihgin preventing lateral displacement of the gibs 4|. means of a screw 43 which is threaded through a flange 44 of the gib and is also threaded, as at 45, into the bracket 39f By rotating'the screw43 it will be manifest thatthegib 4 I will be raised or lowered with re spec't'to'th bracket 39' and if desired and in order to hold the gib in its adjusted position nuts or collars lt'may be employed.
As an additional means for holding the gib in its adjusted position a screw 51 may be employed. This sc'rew'is threaded through the bracket 39' and contacts the edge of the gib'fllfthe' screw being adjustable by means of an angularly shaped head 48.
One of these gibs' 4| is arranged adjacent each of the edges of the extensions 3? on the slide. The gibs 4i contact and move against a Wear plate 49 carried by the extensions'of the slide and secured in position in any suitable manner. These wear plates 49 are preferably recessed into the respective edges of the extentions B'L as at 59.-
With this improved construction it will be manifest that the gibs 4| are not only adjustable to compensatewean but being located at a considerabledistance from "the die carrying surface of theslide 'I'i there'will be provided'guiding means for the slide separate from andin addition to the guiding-means or "gibsi9 which are car- The gibs are adjustably held in'position by ill ried by the uprights beneath the crown, thereby resulting'in the provision of additional guiding means for theslide which is not'only located as crown, the combination of a rigid extension connected to each end of the slide and projecting for asubstantialdjstance above the slide, each of said extensions being of a substantial width in a direction transverse to the longitudinal dimension'of the slide, each extension passing freely through an opening in the crown, and cooperating pairs" of guide members 'individual'to said extensions "and between the members of each "of whieh'pairs one of 'saidex'tensions recipr'ocates, the 'la'st'said' guide members 'being""rigid"an'd mounted upo'nthe crown 'and'projecting iabovef the-top thereof, each of the lateral'edg'es' of each of said extensions having "a freesli'ding engage; ment with one of the last said guidemembersf 2. In a press embodying a crownand "a slide? reci'p'r'ocable between guides "located belowthe crown, the combination of 'a rigid extension con nected to each end of the slide and prbj'ec'ting fora substantial distance above the slide,'ea'ch"of said extensions being-of a substantial width in'a' direction transverse to the longitudinal dimension of the slide; each "exte'nsien passing freely through an opening inthe crown, and 'co'oper at ing pairs of guide members-individual to said extensions and between the members of each 'of Which pairs one of said extensions rec'ipro cates,
the last said guide members v:being rigid and mounted upon the crown and projecting above the top thereof, each of thela't'eral edges of eachof said extensions having afreesliding engage-- ment with one of the'last said guide members,
each-of said extensions filling the'space between the respective members'ofthe pair s'of guides.
