In power presses of the type in which there are provided two co-operating dies,-
one of them is mounted upon the bed of the press and the other is connected to a slide and reciprocable toward and away from the stationary die, the slide being guided in its movement by a frame or guide members.
To cause the dies to register in operation, it has been customary and necessary to provide leader pins secured to one of the dies which enter openings in the other die, and in order to secure accuracy of operation in the registration of the dies, it has also been customary to provide a loose sliding fit between the reciprocable ram or slide and the guide frame.
If the reciprocable slide or ram fits too snugly in the frame or between the guides, considerable friction will be created, which eventually results in wear, causing the slide or ram to become loose, permitting a bodily shifting movement either endwise or sidewise, or both, thereby resulting in the necessity of frequent adjustment.
If the slide or ram is initially loosely fitted in the frame or between the guides the same objection will be present.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to overcome these objections and difficulties and to provide in a metal ,working power press, a frictionless guiding means for the reciprocable ram or slide.
A further object is to provide in a press of this character accurate slide mechanism that will permit of the use of dies from which the 'so-called leader pins will be eliminated.
A further object is to provide a press of this character, in which lost or bodily motion both sidewise and endwise of the slide or ram will be eliminated without interfering in alinement or register without the necessity of frequent adjustment, and the lower face of the slide or ram will be maintained in its originally set position with respect to the work supporting surface, in any position of the ram, throughout the cycle of operation of the press.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful obj ects as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in substantially the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings illustrating this invention, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation, partly broken away and with parts omitted-of one form of power press constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention.-

Figure 4 is a front elevation, partly broken away and with parts omitted, of another type of machine or press constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention.

Referring more particularly to the drawings and to the form of the invention shown in Figures 1 to 3, the numeral 10 designates generally the bed of the press upon which is mounted a work supporting member 11, to which a die 12 is secured.
Projecting above the bed of the press are uprights 13 forming guides or a guide frame upon and between which a reciprocable member or ram 14 operates, a die 15 being secured to the lower face of the ram, the ram being reciprocated by means of links or rods 16 connected to cranks on crank shafts 17.
In the present form of the invention two crank shafts 17 are provided, for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth and the cranks are rotated in any suitable manner such as by means of a driving pinion 18 connected to a drive shaft 19, which latter receives its motion from any suitable source. Connected with the shaft 17 to rotate therewith are gear wheels 20 which mesh with each other, as shown more clearly in Figure 2, the drive pinion 18 meshing with one of the gears 20 to rotate the latter and thereby impart a reciprocatory movement to the ram or slide 14.
In the form of the invention shown in Figures 1 to 3, the links or rods 16 are connected to the respective crank shafts at one end and their other ends are pivotally connected with the ram as at 21 at four points adjacent the corners of the ram or slide, and at points spaced from a central point of the slide or ram and on either side of a central line intermediate and parallel with the front and rear edges of the ram or slide. With this construction the lower face of the ram or slide 14 will always be maintained parallel with the surface of the work support 11 and the face of the bed of the press in every position of the ram. or slide during the cycle of operation of the press. This is advantageous because it renders it possible to place dies in any position under the ram or slide, and the stress exerted by the bringing together of the male and female members of the die so placed will not permit the lower surface of the ram or slide to be tilted or moved out of its originally set position with respect to the work supporting surface.
Secured to or mounted upon the uprights 13 forming the guides or guide frame for the ram or slide and for adjustment with respect thereto, are members 22 which are held in position in any desired or suitable manner, preferably by means of screws 23 connected to the uprights or frame '13 as at 24, in a manner that by the operation of the screws or bolts 23, the supporting members 22 may be bodily adjusted with respect to the uprights 13 by reason of the fact that the screws or bolts 23 will rotate with respect to the uprights 13 and having a threaded connection with the members 22, the rotation of the bolts will adjust the members 22 according to the direction of rotation of the bolts. Lock nuts 25 may be provided for securing the bolts against adjustment.
Journaled upon each of the supporting members 22 are anti-friction rollers 26, any
number of which may be provided according to the size or length of the supports 22 and these supports are so arranged with respect to the ram or slide 14 that the rollers 26 will engage and move upon surfaces 27 carried by the ram or slide. The faces 27 are so arranged that the rollers 26 will hold the ram or slide against bodily movement forwardly and backwardly in a plane substantially parallel with the plane of the upper surface of the work support.
Y In order to hold the ram or slide against such bodily movement in a horizontal plane in a lateral direction or in a direction intersecting the direction of movement of the first recited lateral movement of the ram, ad ditional surfaces 28 are provided on the ram or slide with which surfaces rollers 29 contact and these rollers 29 are j ournaled in adjustable supports 30, suitably mounted upon the uprights or frame 13 for bodily adjustment with respect thereto toward and away from the surfaces 28. A simple and efficient means for effecting such. adjustment of the rollers 29 embodies bolts or screws 31 threaded through a member 32, which latter is secured by means of fastening devices 33 to the uprights 13 and the bolts or screws 31 are connected as at 34 with the members 30 so that by rotating the bolts the members 30 will be moved forwardly or backwardly with respect to the surfaces 28 according to the direction of rotation of the bolts 31. A lock nut or collar 35 may be provided for each of the bolts 31.
The axes of rotation of the rollers 29 are arranged at an angle to the axes of rotation of the rollers 26 so that the ram or slide will be positioned between the rollers, and it will be manifest that the rollers 26 co-operating with the surfaces 27 will hold the ram or slide against bodily lateral movement in one direction while the rollers 29 co-operating with the surfaces 28 will hold the ram or slide against bodily edgewise movement in another direction, with the result that the ram or slide will be maintained in an accurate position with respect to the work supporting surface. The rollers will produce a frictionless guiding means for the ram or slide and after the rollers are once set frequent adjustment thereof will be rendered unnecessary.
Obviously, with a structure of this character it will not be necessary to cause an accurate fit of the slide or ram between the guideways and the amount of machining ordinarily necessary for causing an exact fit between the ram or slide and its guiding means will be reduced to a minimum.
In the form of the invention shown in Figures 4 and 5, the slide 36 is reciprocated by means of an eccentric 37 to which an eccentric arm 38 is connected, and this arm in turn is pivotally connected as at 39 with a supplemental slide 40, which moves between the guideways 41. Rods 42 are rotatably connected with the slide 40 and have a threaded connection 43 with the slide 36, lock nuts or collars 44 being provided for maintaining the proper adjustment.
The upright 45 of this form of machine is preferably hollow and is provided with an opening 46, the walls of the opening being provided with surfaces 47, for a purpose to be set forth. 1
A member 48 is arranged within the upright 45 and projects through the opening 46 to be secured to the slide 36 in any suitable manner, preferably by means of fastening bolts 49, projections being provided on the member 48 to enter openings 51 in the slide 36, for the purpose of positioning the member 48 with respect to the slide.
Rotatably mounted upon the member 48 and Within the upright 45 are anti-friction rollers 52, any number of which may be provided, and the periphery of each of these rollers 52 is spaced from the respective surfaces 47 so as to permit of a gib 53 being inserted between the surface 47 and the periphery of the roller. The surface 47 is preferably inclined as is also the surface 54 of the gib 53, while the surface 55 of the gib is parallel with the axis of the rollers 52 and against which the rollers operate. The inclined surfaces 47 and 54 serve as a means whereby the gib 53 when it is moved inwardly will be forced towards the periphery of the roller to take up wear. The gib 53 is movable forwardly and backwardly in any desired or suitable manner such as by means of a screw 56 threaded into a portion of the upright 45. This screw is provided with a head 57 which engages under a shoulder 58 of the gib 53, with the result that when the screw 56 is rotated the gib 53 will be moved inwardly or outwardly, according to the direction of rotation of the screw.
The gibs 53 may be of any desired length and any desired number of rollers 52 may be provided to operate thereagainst.
The slide 36 has also rotatably mounted thereupon additional rollers 59, the axes of rotation of which intersect the axes of rotation of the rollers 52, and these rollers 59 operate against a surface of members 60, which are secured to and supported by the uprights 45, by means of fastening screws or bolts 61 that extend through slots 62 in the members 60.
These members are movable forwardly and backwardly in directions toward and away from the peripheries of the rollers 59 in any suitable manner, such as by means of screws or bolts 63 that are rotatably connected as at 64 with the respective members 60 and are threaded through a portion of the upright 45. By loosening the bolts 61 and rotating the bolts 63, the members 60 will be correspondingly adjusted, after which the bolts 61 may be tightened and the members 60 held in their adjusted position. Lock nuts or collars 65 may be provided for holding the members 60 in their adjusted position.
By reason of the axes of rotation of the rollers 59 intersecting the axes of rotation of the rollers 52 and as the rollers 52 and rollers 59 engage surfaces carried by the upright 45, it will be manifest that the rollers are so arranged that bodily lateral movement of the slides 36 in a horizontal lane or in a plane substantially parallel wit the plane of the work supporting surface, in any direction, will be prevented, and the slide or ram 36 will be held against such movement.
Furthermore, the rods 42 being connected with the slide 36 at points on opposite sides of the center line of the slide, the latter will be maintained against tilting and in its originally set position with respect to the work supportingsurface during the entire cycle of operation of the press.
While the preferred forms of the invention have been herein shown and described, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, withinthe scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of this invention.
What is claimed as new is 1. In a power press the combination of a press bed, a ram, means for reciprocating the ram in directions towards and away from the bed, a guiding frame for the ram, rollers interposed between the adjacent faces of the ram and frame for maintaining the ram against bodily movement in a horizontal plane at any oint in the cycle of operation of the ram, t e axes of some of the rollers being arranged at an angle to the axes of others of the rollers, and means individual to the rollers for bodily adjusting them with respect to their support.
2. In a power press the combination of a press bed, a ram, means for meciprocating the ram towards and away from the bed, a guide frame for the ram, rollers disposed between the adjacent faces of the ram and frame for maintaining the ram against bodily movement in a horizontal plane at any point in the cycle of operation of the ram, said rollers being arranged adjacent a plurality of lateral faces of the ram, and means individual to the rollers for bodily adjusting them with respect to their support.
