UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFIcE,
OSOAR G. POMEROY, OF PORTAGE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO GEORGE D. DATES, OF SAME PLACE.
METHOD OF LACING BELTS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR O. POMEROY, of Portage, county of Columbia, State of i/Vis cousin, have invented a new and Improved Method of Lacing Leather and other Belting; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which is a plan view of two belt ends laced together by my improved method.
The object of my invention is to provide a lacing for belting in which the liability to wear out or tearout the holes of the belt is greatly diminished; and it consists .in puncturing the 1 5 belt ends with a series ot'rows of holes, one above the other, and lacing together theends of the belt by passing the lace through all the holes in these rows in a peculiar manner, as hereinafter more fully described.
In order that those skilled in the art may make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have .carried it out.
In the said drawing, A represents one end or" 2 5 the belt, and B the other en d. Each end is provided with a series of rows of holes, 0 D E F, to
receive the lacing. Two strings are spliced together, and one end is passed through hole 1 in row D, nearest the scam, in piece A, until 0 the center of the strings about rests in the hole. The ends of the string are then, in opposite directions, passed through hole 2 in row E,
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 228,390, dated June 1, 1880.

near the edge of piece B, thus forming a stitch across the seam. Then draw in opposite directions the ends of the strings through hole 3 5 3 in row F, and thence again through hole 2, thus forming a double stitch around the space back of the first row of holes, E. Next draw the strings, as before, back through hole numbered 1, thereby doubling the stitch over, the seam, next through hole numbered 4 in piece A, and back again through hole numbered 1. This forms a solid or continuous double stitch over the seam and around the blocks both sides of the seam. Next carry the strings di- 4 5 agonally to hole numbered 5 in piece B, and, starting from hole 5, proceed precisely as when the start was made from hole 1, passing the strings through holes 6 and 7, back through 6 and 5, and then to 8, and so on, applying the same method to any number of holes.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improvement in the art of lacing belts, the belting A B, provided with four series of holes, 0 D E F, in combination with the lacing-string G, applied and arranged in the order shown and described.
OSCAR o. POMEROY.
