A. S. MANN.
CORSET LAGING.
Patented July 24 N. PETERS Phowuma n her, Washington D,
UNITED ABRAM S. MANN, OF ROCHESTER, NE\V YORK.
CORSET-LACING.
SPECIFICATION forming part: of Letters Patent No. 386,642, dated July 24, 1888.
Application filed July 19, 1890. Serial No. 208,506.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ABRAM S. MANN, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lacings; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to lacings for corsets or other articles of wearing-apparel, and it is of that kind where the lacing-cord passes alternately from side to side around bearings or l1olders,the ends being drawn up by the wearer to close the sides of the garment. I use asingle or continuous lacing-cord, and form and arrange the parts in such manner as to allow the two ends of the cord to come out together at one side of the garment, to be taken hold of for the purpose of tightening.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 isa side elevation of the two meeting edges of a garment-for instance, a corset-showing my improved form and manner of lacing; and Fig. 2, an elarged cross'section on line at a; of Fig. 1.
Referring to the parts shown in the drawings, A A indicate the opposing edges of the corset to be drawn together by the lacing cord B.
G O are the bearings for the cord, secured to the edges of the corset. 1 form one side of the corset with a marginal longitudinal channel, b, and the other side with a similar marginal channel, 0, in each of which channels I place rollers d, to receive and hold the cord. These rollers constitute spacers for the respective walls of the channels 11 c, to hold said walls asunder, and they are formed with peripheral grooves, and are mounted upon axial pins 6, which pierce the wallsf of the channels, and external plates, 9, to which latter said pins are secured by being riveted or otherwise. The
rollers in the two sides of the corsets are alternated, so that the cord, when carried around them, follows a zigzag course.
In addition to the channel 0, the right-hand side of the corset is formed with a narrow inner channel, a, adjacent to and parallel with the channel a, formed for the purpose of re- (No model.)
turning the end of the string to the place of starting after it has been carried around the rollers, as shown.
The cord is in one continuous piece, and after being carried upward, for instance, by being threaded around the rollers in succession the upper end is returned through the channel a to the lower-end of the corset to join thelower end of the cord. The loose part of the cord occupying the channel a is confined and protected, and being thus covereditis not liable to be caught and pulled to one side or out of place by other parts of the clothing or by other means.
The rollers are covered from view by the walls of the channels, and the cord when passed around them, as stated, is carried fully into the respective channels I) and c, the bends being out of sight on account of said walls.
The portion of the corset appearing at the right in Fig. 1 is provided near its upper end with a roller or sheave, it, placed out of line with the rollers in the channel 0, it being so placed as to overhang the space within said channel or sheath, so that the string or cord will be carried substantially centrally down the channel.
It is known thatsingle cords have been used in lacings-for shoes, for instance-but the advantages possessed by my invention I am not aware have heretofore been obtained.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described device forlacing, comprising a garment having rollersd on its meeting edges, and a side channel, a, a separate roller, h, in a different vertical line from that ofsaid rollers (Land in line with said side channel, anda cord passing over said rollers d and said separate roller It and down said channel, substantially as shown.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ABRAM S. MANN.
