May 19, 1942. E. MURRAY SLIDE FASTENED CLOSURE CONSTRUCTION FOR SHEER GARMENTS Filed Juhe 20, 1940 INVENTOR. E Murra ATT Patented May UNITED STATE coiwsraucr on FOB SHEER GARMENTS Marjorie a. Murray, Meadvllle, '1... assignorto Talon, Inc, a corporation of Pennsylvania application Juneau, 1940. Serial No. 341,547.
' s (cos-14)- lhislnvention relates to'garments and more particularly to dresses and the likamade of thin,
, flimsy and sometimes sheer ma rial. Examples of such materials are sheer sheer cotton slide fastener when it is-movedup or down. 'Ih-iscatching of the flap material in the "slider is due to the buckling and feeding in of the 1 flimsy material between the slider and the instiiiness andchange in the appearance resulting from their use.
My invention provides a. greatly improved placket construction which, without stiflening fabrics and some flimsy artificial silk materials, 5 and changing the appearance of the covering and the term =flimsy' as used herein and in the flap, nevertheless prevents the material of theappended claims refers to that degree of limpfl p. even though 'very limp or flimsy, from ness found in such materials as distinguished catching in the slider of the slide fastener. from the relatively stifier materials such as used A further object of my invention is th overin men's trousers, woolen skirts, etc. coming of the above difliculties withthe s ghtestf In recent years, many such dresses have been possible increase in cost over former construcpr'ovlded with slide-fastened side placket clos tions. ures and the general object of this invention is Still another object of the invention is to pro: t provide. an improved slide-fastened placket vide an improved placket construction which construction for dresses and similar garments will require no additional material or labor on made from such sheer materials. the part of a .dress manufacturer. and which Most slide-fastened dress plackets are made will actually facilitate the attachment of a slide with a covering pleat or flap formed by doubling fastener in a placket opening. over the edge of the garment material. This In general my invention embodies a simple flap, usually about $5" to wide. extends and eillcient guard member which vfunctions free over ,the metalparts of the slide fastener to lift the flap out of the way of the slider as and more or less conceals the same from view. the slider prggressively moves along the fas. It is highly desirable that this flap be made of tener. Not only does this guard member tend the same material as the dress and be relatively to lift the flap out of the way of the slider, but thin so that it will have the same appearance serves effectively to block oil the entrance to and degree of flexibility as the material of the the slider channel. The slide fastener is covered by the flap or pleat 2| which is formed bydoubling over the edge of the thin material of the front waist panel I. and front skirt panel l6.
The details of-the placket construction of the garment of Fig. 1 are shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5.
The slide fastener includes stringer tapes 22 and 23 provided with adjacent reinforced edges 24 and 25 respectively, .upon which reinforced edges are secured rows of complementary interlocking fastener members 26. Conventional top andbottom stops (not shown) may, of course,-

opening which'extends, as above described, into the lower portion of the side waist seam i2 and into the upper portion of the side skirt seam IS, the joined edge portions of the back waist panel II and the back skirt panel ll are folded over upon themselves, as shown at ||a in Fig. 4, to
form a double ply edge portion. This double ply edge portion is secured by a row of stitching 29 directly to the stringer tape 23 of the slide fastener. The ioined edge portions of the front waist panel I. and the front skirt panel l6 are likewise overlapped upon themselves to form a relatively wider double ply edge portion, as shown at -||ia which constitutes the above-described fastener covering pleat or flap- 2|. This double ply edge portion which forms the pleat or flap 2| is secured by a row of stitching 30 to the fastener stringer tape 22, as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4. This, above-described, structure is sometimes known as the knife pleat placket.
The illustrated embodiment of the flap-guardingmeans and lifting means comprises the longitudinal cord 32 which is secured to the stringer .tape22 by means of a line of stitching 3|. The
The application the principles of this invention to a "double knife pleat or "box pleat slide fastener closure construction is illustrated in Fig. 6.- As shown in Fig. 8, the joined edge portions ofthe front waist panel I! and front skirt panel In attaching the'slide fastener in the placket It are folded over upon themselves, as shown at lib, to form a two-ply pleat or flap ll terminating substantially midway of the width of the fastener. progressively block the critical outer corner p'ortions of the slider mouth openings, and while beaasaoea ing moved both outwardly transversely of the closure opening, progressively thrusting the overlying pleats or flaps it and ti upwardly and outwardly away from the path of the slider for efl'ectively preventing the feeding of the sheer material a of the pleats or flaps 40 and ti, eitherinto the space between the interlocking fastener members zainadvance of the slider, or between the slider and the interlocking fastener members 26 at the upper mouthportions of the slider. It will be observed that the cord or cords may ,be attached to the slide fastener by the fastener,
or pleat. My invention although embodying only theuse of flexible cords or their equivalent which are relatively cheap in themselves and relatively cheap to attach a. slide fastener, makes it prace tically impossible for anyone to catch the flap materlal'in the slider and jam the fastener. It not only causes the flap material to be lifted tape on that side of the opening to, which the flap is attached and located between the rows of fastener members and theline of attachment ofsuch stringer tape to the garment material,
-.to prevent the'flimsy flap material from catching'in the slider as the slider is fastener members.

At the same time, this flap remains flimsy and in the case of thin transparent materials, itstill has the same thin transparent appearance and flex- .ibility, thus carrying "out the sheer effect of the It is, of course, to be understoodthat the above description is merely illustrative and in nowise limiting and that I desire to comprehend within my invention such modifications as are included within the scope of the appended claims.
two thicknesses of such material, such flap extending over the rows of fastener members, and a cord-likemember extending along the rows of fastener members substantially the entire length of the slide fastener and attached only to the stringer tape on that side of the opening to which the"flap is attached and located between the rows of fastener members and the line of attachment of such stringer tape to'the garment material, to prevent the flimsy flap material from catching in the slider as the slider is moved along the fastener members.
3.-In a dress or the like of flimsy material having a side placket opening, a slide fastener for closing the opening including a 'pair of-. stringer tapes attached directly to the garment material on opposite sides of the opening, rows j ,fof interlocking fastener members on adjacent edges of the tapes, and a slide'r movable on the fastener members for opening and closing the fastener, a covering flap formed wholly of the same -flimsy material as the dress attached to the garment material on one side of the opening and overlying the fastener members, and a guard member to prevent'the flimsy flap material from catching in the slider as the slider is moved along the fa tener members,. said guard member comprising 1 the flap and the adjacent fastener tape, said cord Having thus fully described'myinvrition, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
