GELSTON SANFORD, OF POUGHKEEFSIE, NEW YORK.
BURSTONE-MILL.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 22,829, dated February 1, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GELsToN SANFORD, of Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Constructing Conical-Bur Mills for Grinding and Flowering Purposes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention relates to the securing a bur block of conical form, to a shaft, and also in fitting two other blocks of bur or other stone thereto, in such a manner that, each piece shall form a half circle and fitted together with a vertical joint and also of the manner of securing the last mentioned blocks to a bed piece or frame of a mill.
To enable others skilled in the artto make and use my invention I willproceed to describe its construction and operation.
The letters of reference onthe different figures refer to the same parts.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of the mill. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same and Fig. 3, is a section of the cob and corn grinding part; Fig. 4, a section of the cone B, and B the casing; E, the furrows; 1, the elevators; 2, 2', the teeth, or cogs, for breaking the cob and grinding the corn; 0, C, the hoppers; C the hopper for the cob, and C, the hopper to be used for shelled corn, or grain.
G, is a lever with a pin G, cast on it, which works in the groove H, for the purpose of readilyfastening and detaching the casing blocks B, to a bed piece or to the floor, which save the trouble of bolts. The lever G, working against the wedge K, secured to the side of the casing block serves to press and hold the shell firmly together. And the same device may be applied to the top bolt. The great advantages in this method of forming the casings with an upright or vertical joint J, is, that the mill is much more readily put up and taken down, and the convenience in picking the casings, as heretofore it has required a particular kind of pick, whereas, in this construction the common pick may be used, and the cone in this case is readily got at to be picked, while in its bed. While heretofore it, the cone, and shaft has had to be displaced by unscrewing a number of bolts and detaching the belts.
Having thus fully described my improvements what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. I claim the mode of constructing the casing or shell with a vertical or upright joint J in combination with the lever Gr, and wedge K, as a fastener for the shell.
2. I claim the grinding part 2, 2, and the elevating part 1 in combination with the cone B and shell B, when constructed and operated in the manner and for the purposes above specified.
GELSTON SANFORD.
