Be it known that I, FRANKLIN FREY, of Liberty, in the county of Adams, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Machine for Picking Hair to be mixed with plastering-mortar; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and-use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification.

' Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional side elevation ofmy improved hair-picking machine.

Figure 2 is a top view or plan of the same. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in the construction of a machine for picking or breaking up the matted knots of hair usedformixing with mortar to plaster houses, and consists in gearing two cylinders near to each other in a box, one'of which has teeth set coarsely or wide apart on its periphery, and the other has teeth set nearer together orfiner on its periphery, each of the cylinders working overand within concaves, also set with teeth in a corresponding manner, so that the matted and knotty masses of hair shall first pass between the cylinder and its concave set with coarse teeth, to break them up and separate hard substances mixed therewith, and then passbetween the other cylinder and its concave set with finer teeth, in order to separate the hair and finish it ready for use in mixing with mortar for plastering. This machine will pick or separate the hair completely, and save much hand labor and cost required by. the old method of beating.

A represents a box, provided with a cover, 13, and C the frame of the machine. D D are cylinders, hung in the frame within the box, which take their motion in the same direction from pinions we on the extremity of their shafts, actuated by a spur-wheel, E, to which is attached a crank, 12, to turn it; A fly-wheel, F, is fixed on the shaft of one of the cylinders. Below the cylinders a bottom piece or floor, G, is suspended at one side to a rod, 0, pivoted with set-screws d at the other end, to raise or lower it for adjustment. In .the floor G are concave surfaces, corresponding :with the circumference of the cylinders D D, and the cylinders and the con- -cave surfaces are both set with pins or tehth e e, in such. manner that when the cylinders revolve, the.teeth on the cylinders and in: the concave surfaces shall pass between each other respectively for the purpose of pulling apart the matted hair to be picked. The teeth 0 set in the cylinder D, and the corresponding concavity in the floor G, are coarser than the teeth e and its corresponding concauity. On the side of the cylinderD is alsloping feed-table or hopper, H, from which the machine is fed regularly with the matted hair, to be discharged at the opposite side after being thoroughly disintegrated bypassing into the rotating cylinders.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent The cylinders D D, and adjustable floor G, suspended in the rod 0, and having concave surfaces corresponding to the cylinders, provided like them with teeth a a}, in combination with the box A and feed-table H, the whole being arranged to operate as and for the purpose described.
