Description
TAYLOR,
Com Mill.
Patented May 31, 1859.
UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
JOSHUA W. TAYLOR, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CORN-MILL.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 24,249, dated May 31, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSHUA V. TAYLOR, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Constructing Portable Grain-Mills; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The same letters refer to like parts.
The nature of my invention consists in applying, in both the upper and lower concave or shell, (of common iron mills,) a number of oblique projections, for the purpose of increasing the grinding surface.
In constructing the cob cutter, I use ordinary circular saws. These cutters, however, do not stand at right angles with the shaft on which they are placed, but by means of the collars or washers are made to assume an angle of about 10 degrees. By this arrangement the various cutter teeth are brought in contact with different parts of the cob, while at'the same time they (the cutters) carry the grain and broken cob into the mill, where it comes in contact with the corrugated surfaces of the revolving cone and stationary concaves or shells, in which are the oblique projections.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the lower concave. Fig. 2 shows the corrugated cone and cob cutters in their proper position, a portion of the upper concave or shell being removed. Fig. 3 is a transverse sec tion through Fig. 2 at g 3 Fig. 4c is one of the saws or cutters. Fig. 5 is one of the washers or collars. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section of the cob cutter.
a is the shell or concave; b, the revolving cone; 0, the oblique projections; cl, the collars or washers of the cob cutters; e, the saws or cutters; f, the outlet for the meal or flour; g, the shaft; h, the pulley; i, the nut for securing the saws or cutters in proper position on the shaft 9.
I am aware that the corrugated concave or shell of the mill and the cone or bur have long been known and in use. Therefore I do not claim such parts of the mill; but
WVhat I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The application and arrangement of the oblique projections c to the shell or concave a, operating in the manner and for the purpose set forth and specified.
