WALTON D. SMITH, OF PROPHETSTOWN, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO GEORGE SEYLLER, OF SAME PLACE.
SKYLIGHT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,282, dated June 1, 1880.
Application filed March 2, 1880.
10 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTON DUANE SMITH, of Prophetstown, in the county of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skylight-s; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention relates to skylights; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinaf- 2o ter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The frame of my improved skylight consists of a metallic plate provided with openings B B, surrounded by collars U 0, having shoulders or flanges D D and rims E E.
F F are glass covers, which are fitted upon the rims E of collar 0, and provided with flanges G, which rest upon the shoulders D of said collars, a packing of felt, rubber, or other 0 suitable material being preferably interposed, as denoted by letter H. These glass covers may be secured in position by means of waterproof cement, or in any other suitable manner.
By this construction it will be observed that 3 5 the skylight is rendered absolutely waterproof, the flanged glass covers preventing any moisture from leaking through the joints.
(No model.)
To prevent moisture from accumulating and freezing upon the inside of the glass covers,
I secure upon the inside of the shoulders D additional flat glasses or panes I I. I also secure upon the underside of the metallic frame a backing, J of non-conducting material, such as cork, felt, or paper. When not thus protected moisture invariably accumulates upon 5 the back of the frame, and drips from thence down upon the floor. By the use of the back ing J this annoyance is avoided.
Ribs K K may be formed upon the under side of frame A to increase its strength. Where large lights are required any number of sections may be bolted or otherwise secured together.
In operation I prefer to secure the skylight in a wooden frame, with which it is mounted in position.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- I11 a skylight, the combination, with aframe having openings surrounded by raised collars O, providedwith shoulders D and rims E, of the glass covers F, having flanges G, and the supplementary panes I, secured upon the under sides of the shoulders D, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WALTON DUANE SMITH.
Witnesses JAMES SoARRrr'r, J r., GEORGE HAMILTON.
