The present invention relates to skylights of the type which has been described in my United States patent application Serial No. 193,897, filed November 1950, now Patent No. 2,610,593, patented September 16, 1952, and provides an improved method of construction in flat and slanting roofs. The present constructional means and method are intended to offer in some respects a more simple and convenient construction, easy to install and simple to fabricate.
In the present invention the skylight plate of dome is constructed of plastic material which is preformed for the desired size of skylight opening and arched to provide suflicient strength to withstand the unusual severe conditions to which a roof is put. The material is preferably a thermoplastic acrylic resin of clear or white translucent or ultra-violet absorbing sheet. The plastic dome of the skylight is formed integrally with an outwardly extending lip or flange by means of which the plastic skylight or dome is attached to the roof opening.
Further details of construction will be fully described and more completely understood from the specification set forth below when taken in connection with the drawing illustrating an embodiment of the same.
In the arrangement indicated in the drawing, the dome 1 is formed of a single plastic sheet molded or blown to the desired size, with a dome-like shape and with an outwardly extending flange 35 which extends about the entire periphery of the dome terminating in a downwardly extending section 36 which extends all the way around the skylight frame 37. The flange 36 is provided with slots or holes spaced preferably uniformly around the flange through which rivets 43 pass clamping the dome to the skylight frame 38 in the manner which will be explained later. The rivets 43 are a split metal rivet preferably made of brass or other non-corrosive material with a slightly enlarged or split spherical end 16 which may be spread or opened to hold the various elements clamped in position. The shank of the rivet is considerably smaller than the hole through the plastic flange so as to allow for expansion and contraction of the dome and thereby prevent cracking or warping of the plastic under changing weather conditions. The frame stud or rivet 43 has an enlarged head 17 and under this head there is a washer 2. The rivet or stud 43 is tightened by separating the split end element 16 until the plastic flange and the gasket 34 are held tightly together. The gasket 34 may be cut at the corners to permit water to drain outwardly as shown in my earlier case above referred to. In the construction just described, the plastic dome will have sufficient give to allow for its expansion or distortion in the peripheral flange without disturbing the tightness of the structure. Since too, the holes in the plastic are larger than the rivet shanks and larger than the holes in the flange 42, there will be no difficulty of lining up these holes with the holes in the downwardly extending flange 42 through which the shank of the rivet must pass.
Suitable gaskets 34 may be used between the flange of the plastic dome and the top of the frame to provide a firm or snug fit of the flange of the plastic dome on the skylight opening, and also to prevent seepage of water beneath the flange of the dome.
The flange 35 of the plastic dome terminates with a downwardly extending section 36 which extends all the way around the skylight frame 37. The skylight frame 37 may be topped by the supporting frame 38 with an Patented Nov. 2, 1954 inwardly and upwardly extending flange 39 as well as a downwardly extending flange 40 by means of which the frame is attached to the roof frame of the skylight opening through suitable nails or screws 41. The downwardly extending plastic flange section 36 may be held in place against the downwardly extending flange 42 of the frame 38 by means of rivets 43 as described above.
While in the arrangement shown in the drawing, the dome is made a specific size, there is considerable leeway allowed since suitable gaskets may be used between the flange section 36 and the flange 42 to take up the space between these two elements. Since however the rivet 43 is loosely held this space need not be kept filled under all conditions. A flashing 42 may be held between the flange 42 and the side wall of the curbing 37.
Having now described my invention I claim:
1. In a skylight construction wherein the skylight opening is bordered by a curbing, a metallic curbing frame having a portion covering the top of the curbing and a portion extending downwardly on the outside of the curbing, a plastic dome covering the opening having a dome shaped area forming the greater portion of the plastic dome with an external terminating bordering flange extending outwardly from the dome shaped region and then downwardly thereof, said outwardly extending portion thereof lying on and supported by said metal curbing frame and said downwardly extending portion thereof positioned in face to face relation to the downwardly extending portion of said metal curbing on its outside, and means in the downwardly extending portion of said bordering flange for clamping said plastic dome to the downward extending portion of the curbing frame.
2. In a skylight construction wherein the skylight opening is bordered by a curbing, a metallic curbing frame having a portion covering the top of the curbing and a portion extending downwardly on the outside of the curbing, a plastic dome covering the opening having a dome shaped area forming the greater portion of the plastic dome with an external terminating bordering flange extending outwardly from the dome shaped region and then downwardly thereof, said outwardly extending portion thereof lying on and supported by said metal curbing frame and said downwardly extending portion thereof positioned in face to face relation to the downwardly extending portion of said metal curbing on its outside, and means in the downwardly extending portion of said bordering flange for clamping said plastic dome to the downward extending portion of the curbing frame, comprising a plurality of spaced rivets passing through said downwardly extending portion of said'flange of the plastic dome and the downwardly extending portion of the curbing frame.
3. In a skylight construction wherein the skylight opening is bordered by a curbing, a metallic curbing frame having a portion covering the top of the curbing and a portion extending downwardly on the outside of the curbing, a plastic dome covering the opening having a dome shaped area forming the greater portion of the plastic dome with an external terminating bordering flange extending outwardly from the dome shaped region and then downwardly thereof, said outwardly extending portion thereof lying on and supported by said metal curbing frame and said downwardly extending portion thereof positioned in face to face relation to the downwardly extending portion of said metal curbing on its outside, and means in the downwardly extending portion of said bordering flange for clamping said plastic dome to the downward extending portion of the curbing frame comprising a plurality of spaced clamping elements passing through said downwardly extending portion of said flange of the plastic dome, the downwardly extending portion of the curbing frame and into the curbing.
