SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,268, dated June 1, 1880.

To all whom t may concern Beit known that l', DAVID H. NATION, of St. Louis, Missouri, have made a new and use- I'ul Improvement in Ranges, ot which the fol- 5 lowing is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part ot' this speciiication, in which- Figure I is a top View of the improved range, a portion of the top plate being rerc moved; Fig. 2, a bottom View of the range,

the bottom plate being removed; Fig. 3, avertical section taken on the line m x of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 a vertical section taken on the line y y of Fig. 1.

.I have heretofore made an improvement in ranges which combined the advantages of a three-tlue cookstove and a range.

The present construction is a modification 2o of the one referred to, and it combines the following special advantages: The upper corner of the oven is not cut into, as in the former construction. There are six boiler-holes, all of which receive the direct heat from the fire- 2 5 place, and the entire range is very compact and readily made.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the improved range, B being the fire-place, C the flue leading from the lire-place, D the 3o oven, E E the diving-fines, F F the side bottom tlucs, G the center bottom flue, H the ascending tlue, and I the escape-flue. The latter is arranged just beyond the entrances to the diving-dues, and it leads from the center of the range, at the end a thereof, 3 5 to the back a of the range, and thence along the back to the final exit a2. The iiue is formed by means otl the end plate, a3, strip a4 a5, and plate a6. The direct entrance to the escapeflue is at a", which can be closed by the damper 4o J. The ascending tlue H connects with the tlue I at h.

The direct draft from the due O to the exit a2 is indicated by the arrows in Fig. I, the damper in such case being turned down, 0pen- 45 ing the entrance a7 and closing the passage h'.

To heat the oven the damper is turned up, as in Fig. 4, and the draft is then through the iiues E E, F F, G, H, and I to the exit a.

I claim-f 5o 1. The combination, in a range, of the iiues O and I, the former extending from the fireplace beyond the boiler-holes, and the latter extending along the end a ot` the range and thence along the back a', substantially as de- 55 scribed.

2. The combination of the lues O E E F F G H .I and the damper J, said tiue I being arranged beyond the diving-dues E E and extending along the end a and back a of the 6o range, substantially as described.
