SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,347, dated December 14, 1880.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GILEs F. FILLEY, of St. Louis, Missouri, have made a new and useful Improvement in Cooking-Stoves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a view, in perspective, of that part of the stove with which the improvement is immediately connected, the damper being turned up, and a portion of the outer and inner walls of the stove being broken away to exhibit the interior construction; and Fig. 2 a similar view, but the damper being turned down.

The present invention isan improvementin three-due cookingstoves, and it is one of a series of moditications of the construction patented to David H. Nation, June 1, 1880, and numbered 228,270.
ln the construction referred to a divisionstrip is extended transversely from one side of the range to the opposite side thereof, just beyond the divin g dues, and the heat-currents, in passing along the top flue, are drawn to the sides of the liuc, and the heat is thereby applied to better advantage. This improvement has especial relation to the construction ofthe division-strip above mentioned and the arrangement of the damper.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the improved stove, having the lire-place B, the flue C leading from the fire-place, the (living iues D D, side bottom dues, E E, center bottom iiue, F, ascending flue Gr, liuc-space H, and-oven I, all as in the construction referred to.
K represents the division-strip, extending from the side a of the stove to the side a', but mainly cut away at k' k, immediately over the diving iiues D D, leaving only a narrow portion, lc k,over theues D D, and only for the purpose of providing shoulders for the twowing damper M M to strike against. damper MM, in place of being arranged entirely below the level of the oven-top, as in the former construction, is arranged partly below the oven-top i. the tlues D D are extended upward higher than in the original construction shown in Nations patent, but are not extended as high as the oven-top, and the damperMM extends from the tops ot' the plates d d upward sufciently to close the entire opening beneath the parts lc 7c', and as shown.
To heat the oven the damper is turned up, as shown in Fig. 1, and the heat-currents are then directed as indicated by the arrows in that ligure. For direct draft the damper is turned down, as in Fig. 2, and the heatcur rents then pass partly through the openings k k in the strip K and partly through the tops of the iiues D D. The exit is at N, at the rear end of the stove.
The iiue G is raised and constructed at its upper end as shown at g, giving a larger opening into the space H.
ln the drawings, the strip K is shown cut away over the lines D D somewhat more than inthe model. Either form, however, can be used without departing from the principle of the improvement.
I claim- 1. In a stove, A, the combination ofthe dues C, D D, and H, said lues G and H being separated by the strip K, and said strip being extended and cut away at k k, as described, and the tlue H, having the escape N arranged at the end of the stove, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a stove, A, of the iiues 0, D D, E E, F, G, and H, and damper M M', said tlues C and H being separated by the strip K, and said strip being arranged, extended, and cut away at lo k, as described, and the ue H having the escape N arranged at the end of the stove, substantially as set forth.
