IMPROVEMENT IN HEATlNG-STOVES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,707, dated September 9, 1873; application filed June 24, 1873.

Be it known that we, EZEKIEL G. LITTLE and DAVID H. NATION, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and in the State of Misiouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves; and do hereby deelare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the let- ;ers of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

Our invention relates to that class of heatin g-stoves wherein the oval is made transverse, and the flue is made to encircle the bottom part of the oval from side to side; and the nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a heating-stove, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which Figure l is a front elevation, Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section, of our stove.

A represents the fire and combustion chamber. Bis the flue encircling the lower part of the body of the stove. G is the flue or division plate. D is the exit-flue chamber. E is the hearth, extending the whole length of the body of the stove. F is the hearth-plate, through which the draft is admitted. G is the angular plate or gratefront. H is the damper; I, the exit-pipe; J, the door-frame; and K the door.

The novelty of this invention consists in makinga front of what has heretofore been a side of an oval heating-stove, by the application of a hearth, E, and a door, K, by which means we are enabled, by the addition of mica or perforated tin, to obtain a beautiful illuminated parlor-stove; and by admitting the draft at the center of the fire-box through the damper F, we obtain a more perfect combustion of the fuel than in the ordinary method at one end of the fire-box. Another point of novelty is, the construction of the exit-flue chamber D, it being made in two parts, divided at the center, and the flue-plate 0 carried through the outside casin g sufficiently far into the flue-chamber to support the damper H at an angle, so that it will stay up when closed, and when open the damper will lie on a horizontal line with the plate. This fluechamber D is made separate from the body of the stove, mounted together, and riveted or bolted to the body of the stove.

When the damper H is closed, the heated products of combustion pass over and down the flues each side of the front door-opening or grate-front, making the circuit of the lower part of the body of the stove through the flue B into the flue-chamber D, and out of the exit-pipe I. When the damper H is open or lies on the horizontal line, the heat passes immediately off into the flue-chamber D and out of the exit-pipe I.

Our invention can be used on stoves having either cast or sheet iron bodies and therefore we do not confine ourselves to either material in the construction of these stoves.

The object and advantage of this invention are, that we obtain, by the aid of mica or perforated tin, a handsome parlor-stove, and, dividing the heat by means of the front opening, we effectually heat the outside of the stove.

Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The oval heating-stove described, provided with hearth E, hearth-plate F, and mica doors J K on one of its sides, and exit-flue chamber and pipe-opening upon the opposite side, whereby the draft is admitted at the center of the fire-box, and extends across the narrow portion of the stove, substantially as set forth.

2. In an oval heating-stove, the combination of the flue-sheet G, extended beyond the stove body, the exterior flue-chamber D, and the damper H with the flue B, all substantially as set forth.
