4 Claims. (01. 223-91) My invention relates to improvements in garment hangers, the principal object in view being to provide an inexpensively constructed, strong, lightweight hanger for ladies coats, skirts and dresses, as well as mens suits, and. which may be used in a closet or locked to any size clothes line as desired. a
Other and subordinate objects are also comprehended by my invention, all of which, together with the precise nature of my improvements, will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claims are read with reference length of wire II is coiled convolutely around v the shank portions 8, 9, with its upper end bent to the drawings accompanying and forming part 7 of this specification.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a garment hanger embodying my improvements,
Figure 2 is a similar view illustrating the movable clamping bar swung upwardly away from the relatively fixed clamping bar,
Figur 3 is a view in vertical transverse section taken on theline 33 of Figure 1 and drawn to an enlarged scale,
Figure 4 is a view in horizontal section taken on the line 4-4 of Figure l,
Figure 4 is a view in perspective of one of the Figure 6 is a view in transverse section taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 1 and drawn to an enlarged scale, 7
Figure 7 is a view in perspective of the hanger thereof, and Figure 8 is a similar perspective view of the clamping rod.
, Reference being had to the drawings by numerals, in the illustrated embodiment thereof,
my improved garment hanger comprises a hanger frame including a hanger hook I, a shank 2 depending from said hook, a pair of upper stretches 3 extending oppositely from the lower end of said shank with major portions inclining outwardly and downwardly to outwardly bowed end stretches 4, and a lower stretch 5. A pair of downturned open loops 6 are formed in the upperstretch'es 3 adjacent the end stretches 4, and a pair of upturned similar loops 1 in the lower stretch 5 directly opposite the loops 6 and for a purpose presentlyclear.
The described hanger frame is formed, with the exceptions presently noted, of a single piece of suitable gauge wire having one end bent to form the hook .I and a, straight shank portion ii, and its other end bent to form a straight shank portion 9 alongside the portion 8 and terminating at the base of the hook I in an eyeinto another eyelet l2 arranged opposite the eyelet I0 and offset to the other side of the por tio'ns 8, 9. A rod-like clasp member I3 is suspended in the eyelets l0, l2, said member having a loop end I4 extending through the eyelets lil, l2, so that the clasp member is vertically swingable in said eyelets, and a hooked opposite end l5 adapted to be hooked around the lower end of the shank 2 in a manner such that a clothes line l6 may be clamped between said clasp member I 3 and shank 2 to lock the hanger to said 11 he. The clasp member is formed ofresilient bendable wire so that clothes lines of different sizes may be clamped between the same and said shank 2 in a manner which will be clear.
A- pair of wire brace links I1 extend between the pair of loops 6 and the pair of loops 1 to brace the lower stretch 5 of the hanger frame.
Afixed garment clamping bar I 8, preferably of light strong wood, and having a longitudinal bottom groove 19 therein, is fitted over the lower frame stretch 5 between the loops 1, said bar having end slots 20 straddling, in part, the loops 1, whereby the bar is prevented from turning on said stretch 5. A pair of split clamping bands 2| of resilient metal surrounding the clamping bar 18, adjacent opposite ends thereof, secure the latter to the frame stretch 5. Th fixed clamping bar I8 is provided with a fiat side face 22 for a purpose presently seen.
For cooperation with the fixed clamping bar I8, a similar movable clamping bar 23 is pro- Suitably secured to the inturned ends 28' of links '26, as by soldering, not shown, is a clamping rod 29 adapted when the yoke is swung downwardly to extend alongside fixed clamping bar It.
. The movable clamping bar 23 is provided with a longitudinal bottom groove 30 by means of which said bar is fitted over said rod 29 between the links 26, and end slots, not shown, but similar to slots 20, and straddling the links 26 to prevent said bar from turning on the rod 29. A pair of bands 3| similar to bands 2| secure the movable clamping bar 23 to said clamping rod 29.
Means are provided on the described yoke 25 and hanger frame for variably and yieldingly locking the movable clamping bar 23 in clamping relation to the fixed clamping bar and now to be described.
The yoke 29 is provided with resilient end extensions 32 having terminal ends 33 adapted to abut laterally the end stretches 4 of the hanger frame when the movable clamping bar engages the fixed clamping bar I8, said extensions having intermediate bends 34 forming notches laterally spaced from the stretch 5 of the hanger frame when said bar 23 is in the described engaging position. A pair of rings 35 are slidably mounted on said extensions 32, respectively, and on the frame stretch 5 in encircling relation thereto, the arrangement being such that if said rings 35 are slid along said extensions 32 toward the terminal ends 33 of the latter, into different set positions, the clamping bars I3, 23, may be urged into variably spaced clamping relation, and, on the other hand, if said ring 35 are engaged with said bends, Or notches, 34, said bars I8, 23 will be locked with a snap action into more closely spaced, yielding and clamping relation.
As will now be manifest, in the variably spaced relation of the bars I8, 23, garments of different heavy weight cloth may be clamped loosely, or tightly, as desired, between the bars, and in the more closely spaced relation of the bars [8, 23, garments of lightweight cloth may be similarly clamped between said bars.
The rings 35 may be slid along the frame ends 4 clear of the terminals 33 of extensions 32, so that the yoke 25 and movable clamping bar 23 may be swung upwardly, as shown in Figure 2, to facilitate hanging clothes over the fixed clamping bar l8. Clothes may be also hung over the movable clamping bar 23 and the same lowered alongside the bar l8 so that the capacity of the hanger is doubly increased by said bar 23 and yoke 25 as regards loose hanging.
The frame stretches 3 may be used in the usual manner for hanging coats, vests and other garments.
As will further be manifest, the described clamping features of my invention render the hanger exceptionally useful in suspending trousers smoothly by the cuffs thereof.
Also, by means of the described clasp l3 for locking the hanger to a clothes line, garments on the hanger may be suspended from such lines without danger of being blownto the ground or blown off the line and thus lost.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the subjoined claims.
