' Patented Feb. 24, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MATCH BooK rumor.V
Henri Daniel, New York, N. Y. Application December 11, 1940, Serial No. 3695536 Claims.y (Cl. 206-29) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a match book brace.
The invention particularly proposes a brace adapted to be used in combination with a book of matches having a wire stitch mounted through and holding the bottom portions of the cover and match sheets together. The invention contemplates characterizing the brace by the fact that it is constructed from a V-shaped strip of rigid material of a length substantially equal to the width of said book of matches, and adapted to be mounted on the bottom portion thereof so as to have its arms extending over the front and back portions of the wire stitch. It is proposed to constructthe arm portions of the V-shaped strip With inturned edge portions engaging over` the front and back portions of the wire stitch for holding the V-shaped strip thereon.
-It is proposed that the said V-shaped strip be constructed of sheet metal, composition, or other rigid materials. It is contemplated to imprint, engrave or in other way de corate the outside faces of the strip with ornamentation or with individuals initials, or other attractive material or advertising.
A dominating feature of the brace resides in the fact that it extends over and covers the Wire stitch, which is not very ornamental. Moreover, it protects ones clothing from being pierced by the pointed ends of the wire stitch. Furthermore,
the brac-e firmlysecures together the bottom portions of the book of matches preventing the cover, or portions thereof, being accidentally torn away from the wire stitch. Moreover vin those books of matches having match striking material on the bottom portion thereof, the brace will extend forwards of the striking material and protect it from being Worn away, or soiled with Wet fingers, Y
c. r Still further the invention contemplates a modification in which resilient means is mounted within the V-shaped strip, and engages the boterence will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
l Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a match book provided with a brace constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2` is a fragmentary -enlarged edge elevational view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a front elevational view of a book of matches with a brace mounted thereon constructed in accordancewith a modified form of this invention.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the book match brace shown in Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a transverse vertical sectional View as though taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
The match book brace, in accordance with this invention, is used in combination with a book of matches I 0 having a wire stitch II mounted through and holding the bottom portions of the cover I2 and match sheets I3 together. The cover I2 has a bottom front flap I2a which continues into back section |217, which continues into the front cover section |20. The bottom edge of the front cover section I2cengages behind the bottom front iiap I2a when the book of matches is closed. Match striking material I4 is mounted on the outer face of the bottom front fla-p Iza.
The brace, in accordance with this invention, comprises a V-strip of rigid material I5 of a length substantially equal to the Width of the book of matches III and mounted on the bottom portion thereof with its arms |5a extending over the front an-d back portions of the book of matches, and over the front and back portions IIa and IIb, respectively, of the wire stitch II. Inturned edge portions I6 are formed on the edges of the arms of the V-shaped strip I5 engaging over the front and back portions IIa and IIb of the said wire stitch Il for holding the V-shaped strip I5 thereon.
i The V-shaped strip I5 may be made of sheet metal, composition material, stiff paper, and other similar material. Preferably gold plated sheet metal should be used, or other precious metals so that the brace may be of a permanent character. It then may be removed from one book of matches when the book is consumed, and placed on another. The outer faces of the arms of the V-shaped strip I5 may be suitably decorated, or imprinted, or engraved with ones initials, or with advertising material, to enhance its permanent character. The brace may be removed from the book of matches by forcing it laterally in one direction or the other so that it slips oif from one or the other sides of the book of matches.
In Figs. 4 to 6 inclusive, a modied form of the invention has been disclosed which distinguishes from the prior form in the fact that resilient means has been associated with the V-shaped strip I5 so as to engage the bottom edge portion of the book of matches II! urging the strip and book of matches part so as to firmly engage the inturned edge portions I6 against the Wire stitch II. This resilient means comprises a leaf spring I9 having a central upwardly projectingportion I9a With inclined sides. The ends of the leaf spring I9 extend along the center of the V-shaped strip I5 and slidably engage beneath a pair of inturned lugs Il, preferably formed from the material from which the strip I5 is made.
In other respects this form of the invention is identical to the previous form and like parts are identified by like reference numerals.
The operation of this form of the invention may best be understood by examining- Fig. 4 and noting that the brace may be removed by forcing it laterally in one direction, or the other, so that it slips off from the book of matches. The' brace may then be engaged on another book of matches and properly iit this book of matches irrespective of the fact that the wire staple II thereof may be in a different vertical position. rIhe leaf spring I9 Will compensate for such different positions. In each case the central projecting portion ISa will engage the bottom of the book of matches forcing the brace downwards so that the inturned edges I6 engage the Wire stitch II.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it -is to be l' understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modicati'ons coming Within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, vvhat I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
