Description

G..TAYL0R. .Boot and Shoe.
Nog-221.318. Patented may 4, lso.
N. PETERS. PNDT l f r UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE TAYLOR, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGN OR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO JOSEPH A. HURD, OF SAME PLAGE.
BOOT AND SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part'of Letters Patent No. 227,318, dated May 4, 1880.
Application filed February 16, 1380.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, in the county ofEssex and State of Massa- 5 chusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to 1o which it appertains to make and use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in boots and shoes; and it consists in interposing a narrow elastic gore between the upper and the sole from the toe to the shank on one or both sides of the boot or shoe, so as to provide for a perfect and easy fit andto prevent undue binding of the upper on the foot.
This invention is equally applicable to all kinds of boots and shoes, as well as slippers, whether made of cloth or leather, and it can 2 5 be applied to sewed and pegged work to equal advantage.
I do not confine myself to any particular manner of uniting the said elastic gore or gores to the sole and upper, as it may be done by 3o means of sewing or cementing the respective parts together, or in any other manner, as may be desired.
On the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a side elevation of a boot made in 3 5 accordance with my invention, and Fig.2 represents a cross-section on the line A B, shown in Fig. l.
Similar letters refer to similar parts whereever they occur on the different parts of the 4o drawings.
a represents the boot, on which b is the upper, and c is the sole. d d represent the elastic gores, as described, extending from the toe to the shank, preferably on both sides of the boot or shoe, as shown, and for the purpose set forth. v
The said elastic gores may be made of sheetrubber or Woven elastic fabric, as may be desired, according to the nature of the material of which the boot or shoe is made-as, for in- 5o stance, for leatherwork I may pret'er to use gores made of sheet india-rubber, and for clothwork I may prefer to use woven elastic fabric gores, but I do not wish to confine myself to such precise construction.
In making the said elastic gores of sheetindia-rubber they will serve to prevent dampness from striking through atthe junction of the upper and the sole, in addition to the advantages heretofore set forth. 6o
I am aware that elastic gores have been inserted in the insteps and in the tops of the front portions of the uppers of boots and shoes; but these gores do not give that ease to the wearer afdicted with corns, bunions, or tender toe-joints which is obtained by the insertion of the gores at the junction of the upper and sole, and are not my invention.
Having thus fully described thenature, construction, and operation of my invention, I 7o wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim- As an improved article of manufacture, a boot or shoe having an elastic gore, d, substantially as shown, at the junction ot' the upper and sole, on one or both sides, and extending from the toe to the shank, a-s described.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE TAYLOR.
