This invention relates to stoves and has special reference to that type of sheet iron heating stove commonly known as a wood-burner.
Stoves of this character generally include an oval drum or body having a top provided at its forward part with a large charging opening provided with a sheet iron lid or closure, the top also having at its rear part a smoke pipe connection flange. The sheet iron lid for the charging opening is generally somewhat dome-shaped and also does not present a plane surface whereon cooking may be done.
One important object of the invention is to provide a closure for the charging opening of a wood-burner stove of this character with a lid or closure constituting a heating surface.
A second important object of the invention is to provide such a lid of a form adapted to be used as a frying pan, griddle and the like A third important object of the invention is to provide a novel pivotal connectionbetween such a lid and the top of the stove.
A fourth object of the invention is to provide a novel form of channel joint between the lid and the stove top especially arranged to prevent the escape of smoke or ashes or the emission of gases of combustion.
A fifth important object of the invention is to provide a novel combination of top and lid in such a stove whereby the heavy lid is supported in such manner as to avoid flexing of the stove top downwardly under the weight of the lid.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stove and lid constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the front portion of the stove and showing the lid closed in full lines and open in broken lines.
Figure 3 is an enlarged section on the line 3P3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a similar section on the line 44 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a bottom view of the lid removed from the stove.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawing there is provided a sheet iron drum I0 oval in plan and having vertical side walls I'I. At the front of the drum there is provided draft controlling means I2,the details of which are not here disclosed since this device is old and well known and forms no part of the present in-- vention.
The stove top includes a flat portion 13 around the periphery of which is a downwardly inclinedportion I4 which merges into an upstanding wall I5 which extends above the main portion I3 of the top. At its upper edge this wall I5 merges into a downwardly extending flange I6 between which and the wall I5 is secured the upper edge of the wall II. 'The portion I4 and wall peripheral channel II extending around the top. The top I3 is provided at its rear part with a thimble I8 for connection of a smoke pipe (not shown).
At the front of the top there is provided a charging opening I9 and the metal of the top is bent upwardly around this opening and then inwardly and downwardly to form an upstanding bead I9 and a depending skirt 2B which extends well down below the main portion l3 of the top. At two points in its extent the bead I9 approaches close to the channel H.
The lid has a circular body 2| fitting within the bead I9 and provided peripherally with an upstanding and outwardly flared flange 22 which merges at its upper edge into an outstanding flat rim 23 from whence depends an outer flange 24 which flares outwardly and rests normally upon the top portion I3 just outside the bead I9 The rim 23 is provided with diametrically disposed and'outwardly extending lugs 25 and 2B. The lug 25 is provided with an opening 21 wherein is engaged the eye 28 of a one piece wire handle 29, the shank 30 of the handle normally resting on the junction of the parts I5 and I6 so that the handle 29 is held clear of the heated stove parts. Extending downwardly and then outwardly from the lug 26 is an L-shaped pivot member 3| which normally passes through a pivot opening 32, the top I3 being reinforced at this point by a washer 33 fixed to the under side of the top and through which the pivot 3I also passes. On the under side of the lid is a downwardly extending stop lug34 which engages with the head 22 at one point to limit the swinging movement of the lid when in closed position and at another point to limit opening movement of the lid.
It will be noted that the lid may be disengaged from the top by swinging the part at the lug 25 I5 combine to form a upwardly so that the pivot 3| may be withdrawn from the opening 32. The fiange 24 is bevelled upwardly at the lug 25.
It is to be noted that the skirt or flange member 20 extends well down below the main flat portion l3 of the stove so that the traveling gases or smoke as they strike against the skirt member 20 are deflected downwardly towards the flue.
It is also desired to point out that the rim 23 of the grid member approaches, at two points, close to the channel H, the inner wall of the channel thereby transmitting to the side walls of the stove, the weight of the relatively heavy grid member and in this way the relatively thin stove steel supports the relatively heavy cast iron lid.
The lid is preferably made of cast iron or steel of sufllcient thickness to provide the necessary strength andto prevent buckling under heat. It has been ascertained that a thin steel top not only lacked the strength necessary to function as a grid, but buckled under heat. Further, a thin steel grid is subjected to corrosion. The lid of the present invention is of sufficient thickness to retain heat during cooking operations whereby the lid may be used as a griddle, frying pan, or other similar cooking utensil. Various articles may be cooked on the griddle, as for example fish, batter cakes, eggs, bacon and the like.
While the grid member is preferably made of ,cast iron which will resist heat, warping, and corrosion, said cast iron being preferably a high silicon-low sulfur cast iron, steel alloys may be used, as for example chrome steel or stainless steel.
It is within the province of the present invention to construct the grid of any material which is resistant to heat, corrosion, and will not warp.
The fuel which is fed through the charging opening I9 is preferably wood, although it is obvious that coal, coke or any other fuel may be substituted for the wood.
It is to be noted that the swinging griddle top or lid member forms a cup joint with the bead I 9*, as clearly shown in Figure 4.
What is claimed, is:
1. The combination with a stove having a sheet iron top provided with a charging opening and having peripheral stifiening means, a reinforcing bead upstanding from said top and surrounding said opening, a heavy metal lid having a downwardly open peripheral channel adapted to fit over said bead, a lug projecting outwardly from said lid, said lug having an L-shaped pivot, said top having a reinforced opening to receive said pivot and a handle projecting from said lid.
2. The combination with a stove having a sheet iron top provided with a charging opening and having peripheral stifiening means, a reinforcing bead upstanding from said top and surrounding said opening, a heavy metal lid having a downwardly open peripheral channel adapted to fit over said bead, and lugs projecting outwardly from said lid, one of said lugs having an opening therein, a handle having an eye engaging with said lug opening and having a shank normally resting on said stiffening means, the other lug having an L-shaped pivot, said top having a reinforced opening to receive said pivot.
3. The combination with a stove having a sheet iron top provided with a charging opening and having peripheral stiffening means, a reinforcing bead upstanding from said top and surrounding said opening, a skirt depending from said bead and extending below said top, a heavy metal lid having a downwardly open peripheral channel adapted to fit over said bead, and lugs projecting outwardly from said lid, one of said lugs having an opening therein, a handle having an eye engaging with said lug opening and having a shank normally resting on said stiffening means, the other lug having an L-shaped pivot, said top having a reinforced opening to receive said pivot.
'4. The combination with a stove having a sheet iron top provided with a charging opening and having peripheral stiffening means, a reinforcing bead upstanding from said top and surrounding said opening, a skirt depending from said bead and extending below said top, a heavy metal lid having a downwardly open peripheral channel adapted to fit over said bead, said bead being adjacent said stiffening means at at least two points, andlugs projecting outwardly from said lid, one of said lugs having an opening therein, a handle having an eye engaging with said lug opening and having a shank normally resting on said stiffening means, the other lug having an L-shaped pivot, said top having a reinforced opening to receive said pivot.
