ARTICLE HOLDER l Filed Oct. 26, 1940 l 3mm W 'cfoflfnsaz Patented Jan. 27, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT" AOFFICE y r y ,2,271,262y f -v L ARTICLE HOLDER William v. Johnson, washington, D. c. Application October 26, 1940, Serial No. 363,038v
4 Claims.
This invention relates to an article holder and has relation more particularly to a device of this character especially designed and adapted for use in the holding of pipesv and other articles for personal use.
. It is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind which can be readily engaged withan article of clothing, such as a belt, the waist band' of a nether garment, etc.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind comprising a plurality of hingedly connected plates normally urged into clamping action and whereinsaid plates may be expanded or extended upon pressure to permit an article to be applied thereto or removed therey The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and'arrangement of the several parts of my improved article holder whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise lmore convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. *Y
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing,'wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of an article holder constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and applied to a belt, said belt being in fragment and the device being also illustrated in holding engagement with a DIPE;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view in end elevation of the device as herein disclosed;
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 3; l
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 5 5 of Figure 3.
As herein embodied my improved article holder comprises two substantially -duplicate articulated sections S, each of said sections comprising two plates I and 2 substantially of the same dimensions and being of considerable width but herein disclosed as of a width in excess of the length. Adjacent end portions of the plates I and 2 of each section Sare formed to provide the interfitting and inwardly disposed knuckles end portions of the sections S while disposed through the knuckles 5 and 6 at the opposite or upper end of the device is a pintle 8 whereby said end portions of the sectionsare also pivotally connected.
Thepintles 1v and 8 between the knuckles 5 ,are .surrounded by the coil springs 9 of-predetermined tension. One extremity of each of the springs 9.is,provided with an extension I0 contacting from without, with the adjacent portion oftheplate IA or 2of one of the sections and having at its opposite end an extension I I, contacting with theadjacent portion ofthe plate I or 2 of the second section. These springs v9 are of a tension suiicient to normally maintain the plates I and 2 in compacted or folded relation and under a tension suiciently to effectively hold an article inserted between the sections S, as for exampleA the stem of a pipe P as particularly illustrated in Figures 1 vand2 of the drawing.-
vBypressing upon the ends ofthe device, as by a squeezing action of a hand, the device may be caused to expand sufficiently to facilitate the insertion within or the removal therefrom of the stem of the pipe P or other desired article.
The side margins of the plates I and 2 are provided with the inwardly disposed anges I2 extending substantially entirely along said margins and which flanges yprovide means for maintaining between the sections S the tubular gripping member M, the walls of which are iiexible.
When the holder is in its normally compacted or closed adjustment, as eifected and maintained by thesprings 9 as illustrated in Figure 3, this member M substantially entirely overlies the opposed faces of the plates I and 2 of the sections S with theintermediate knuckles 3 contacting the intermediate portion of said member M. The folds of themember M andthe radii of the knuckles 3 are such to prevent the intermediate pivotalconnection between the plates I and 2 of the sections S passing inwardly beyond 3 through Which are directed the pintles 4 where- 55 dead center so that upon pressure on the outer end of the device the pivotally connected inner ends of the plates l and 2 will swing outwardly and for a distance sufficient to permit the ready insertion through the member M of the article to be held or to allow the removal of such article.
The anges I2 are not required at both ends of all of the plates I and 2 but said anges I2 may be in staggered relation as illustrated in the drawing.
The pintle 8 is of a length to extend a slight distance beyond the adjacent sides of the assembled sections S and has its extremities continued by the outwardly and substantially perpendicularly related short arms I4. These arms I4 have their outer ends continued by the elongated arms I5. These arms I4 and 'I5 'arein substantially right angular .relation and the outer end portions of the arms I5 are connected by `a cross arm I6. The arms I4 are of such length as to permit the ready insertion of the arms I5 rearwardly of a belt B, the waist band -of a nether garment, or other article of clothing worn by a'person, and with the sections S overlying the outer endsof the belt B or the like ras `particularly illustrated in Figures 1 4and 2. As
illustrated in the drawing, the arms I5 are to be inserted from above behind the belt B or the like to facilitate the maintenance of the holder in place. f
`With the device applied to a belt or the like, it is believed to be obvious that the sections S with or without an article therethrough may be readily swung upwardly about the pintle 8 to facilitate the applic-ation or removal of the article, Asuch as the pipe P. `It is also believed to be apparent that after the application or removal of the article from the holder the holder vproper .as comprised in the sections .S will swing downwardly by gravity to lie close against the belt B or the like.
AFrom the foregoing description .it is thought to be obvious that an .article holder constructed in accordance with my invention Vis particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenienceand facility with which it maybe assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. An article holder comprising two overlying sections, each of said sections comprising two fiat plates, means for pivotally connecting the adjacent inner end portions of the plates, means for pivotally connecting the outer end portions of the plates of one section with the outer end portions of the plates of the second section, and means for constantly urging the plates of one section toward the plates of the second section.
2. An article holder comprising two overlying sections, each of said sections comprising two `flat; plates, means for pivotally connecting the adjacent inner end portions of the plates, means for pivotally connecting the outer end portions of the plates of one section with the outer end portions of the plates of the second section, means for constantly urging the plates of one section toward the plates of the second section, anda flexible tubular gripping member .interposed between the sections and substantially overlying the opposed faces of the plates.
3. An article holder comprising two overlying sections, each of said sections comprising two fiat plates, means for pivotally connecting the adjacent inner end portions of the plates, means for pivotally connecting the outer end portions of the plates of one section with the outer end portions of the plates of the second section, means for constantly urging the plates of one section toward the plates of the second section, a flexible tubular Lgripping member interposed between the sections and substantially overlying the opposed faces of the plates, and means for holding the 4gripping member between the sections.
4. An article holder .comprising two overlying sections, one of said sections comprising two at plates, means for pivotally connecting the adjacent inner end portions `of the plates, means for pivotally connecting the outer end portions of the plates of one sectionwith the outer end portions of the plates of .the second section, said pintle extending beyond opposite sides of the sections, angularly disposed short arms carried by the extended portions of such pintle, and substantially perpendicularly related elongated arms at the cuter end portions Vof the short arms, said arms providing means for .engaging the device with a support.
