Description

J. .l. GODARD.
UMBRELLA HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED N-0V.29, 1919.
Patented July 27, 1920.
Inventor JJ Godard I UNITED STATES JOSEPH J. GODARD, OF MOBILE, ALABAMA.
UMBRELLA-HOLDER.
Application filed November 29, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH J. GoDARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mobile, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in umbrella holders and has for one of its objects the provision of a clevice of this character which can be conveniently and quickly applied to a person so that an umbrella will be supported over the head leaving the hands and arms free for other use.
Another object of this invention is the provision of an umbrella holder of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
\Vith these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invent-ion, reference is to be had to the following description, and accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of an umbrella holder illustrating the same applied to a person,
Fig. 2 is a sectional view illustrating the means of securing the shoulder straps to the base,
Fig. 3 is a detail view of a clamp.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a supporting base which is adapted to be disposed vertically against a persons body as illustrated in the drawing and is constructed from any material suitable for the The upper end of the with pairs of spaced slots 2 to receive shoulder straps 3. The straps are passed through the slots and may be permanently secured to the base if desired. One of the shoulder purpose. base 1 is provided Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 27, 1920. Serial No. 341,459.
straps is provided with buckles 4 at its ends to receive the ends of the other shoulder straps after said straps have been placed about the shoulders of a person whereby the upper end of the base is securely fastened or supported to the body of a person. The lower end of the base 1 is provided with spaced slots 5 to receive the Waist band or strap 6 which is provided with a buckle so that the same can be adjustably secured about the waist of the person.
A block 7 is secured to the base 1 adjacent its upper end and is provided with a groove 8 to receive the staff 9 of an unibrella 10. A substantially U-shaped clamp 11 is detachably secured to the base and overlies the block 7 and staff 9 of the run brella 10 to firmly secure the staff within the groove 8.
A substantially tachably secured U-shaped clamp 12 is dcto the base adjacent its lower end and is adapted to straddle or overlie the handle 13 of the umbrella 10, thus it will be seen that the umbrella is firmly secured to the base and will be supported over the head of a person or the wearer, leaving the hands and arms free for other purposes.
lVhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination, and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimec.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. An umbrella holder comprising a vertical base having pairs of spaced slots therein, shoulder stra as passed through said slots, buckles secured to the ends of one of the shoulder straps and adapted to receive the ends of the other shoulder straps after said straps have been placed about the shoulders of a person, said base having a pair of slots adjacent its lower end, a waist band passing through the slots and the lower end of said base and adapted to be adjusted about the waist of a person, and clamps detachably securing an umbrella to the base.
2. An umbrella holder comprising a base of elongated formation, shoulder and waist straps secured to said base and adapted to i r be adjusted jacent its upper end and having a groove 7 and adapted to receive the staff of an umbrella, a substantiallyU-shaped clamp secured to the base and straddling the block and staff of the umbrella,
a second sub stantially U-shaped clamp secured to the base adjacent its lower end andadapted to straddle the handle of the umbrella.
In testimony whereof I afilx mysignatnre in presence of two Witnesses.
7 JOSEPH J. GODARD.
