3 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in holders for small articles which are mounted on cards and similar objects.
More specifically, the invention proposes to characterize the holder by a short length of elastic cord, and a barb mounted on each end thereof and of a certain construction so that the barbs may be engaged through openings in a display card, or other cards or objects, and assume positions behind the card while the elastic cord extends across the front of the card and over an object to be held.
Still further the invention proposes to characterize each barb by the fact that it is formed from sheet metal, and has a tail section at one end portion and a cylindrical section at the other end portion, and the cylindrical section being clamped on the cord so that the cord extends from the central portion of the barb.
Still further it is proposed that the ends of the sections of the barb be blunt.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a lug portion stamped from the sheet metal member which forms the barb, and arranged in such a manner that a section of the elastic cord may be wound around the barb and engaged beneath the lug portion, whereby the length of the elastic cord may be varied to better suit various types of articles to be displayed or held on the display card or object.
Another object of the invention is the construction of a device as described which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended. claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure- Fig. l is a fragmentary front elevational view of a display card, displaying pencils which are held in position with blunt barb elastic holders constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary enlarged sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary enlarged detailed view of a rear area of the card shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective View of one of the elastic holders as it appears before it is engaged upon the display card.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary elevational view looking in the direction of the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 66 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a schematic developed view showing the blank from which the barb is formed.
Fig. 8 is a side elevational viewof one end of a blunt barb elastic holder constructed in accordance with another form of this invention.
Fig. 9 is an elevational view looking in the direction of the line 9-9 of Fig. 8, but showing the elastic cord removed from its position around the barb.
The blunt barb elastic holder, in accordance with this invention is particularly intended to hold small articles on display cards, and on other similar objects. In Figs. 1-3 inclusive, a display card 10 is illustrated upon which a plurality of pencils II are supported by blunt barb elastic holders I2 embodying this invention.
Each blunt barb elastic holder l2 comprises a short length of elastic cord l3 and a barb M mounted on each end. Each barb M comprises a sheet metal member having a tail section Ma at one end portion and a cylindrical section Mb at the other end portion. The cylindrical section Mb is engaged about an end of the cord l3 and clamped on to the cord so that the cord extends from the central portion of the barb. The ends I 40 and Md of the barb are blunt, that is, they do not have any piercing points.
The barb M is constructed from a sheet metal stamping M. In Fig. 7 a developed View of one of the sheet metal stamped parts is shown. It
should be noted that the sheet metal stamping M has a narrow tail end Mau. which will comprise the tail section Ma of the finished barb, and it has a relatively wide end Mbb which will comprise the cylindrical section Mb of the barb. The ends M00 and Mdd of the sheet metal stamping M are blunt, that is, they are not pointed. These ends will form the ends Mo and Md, respectively, of the barb.
The display card I0 is formed with a plurality of pairs of openings l8 through which the barbs M of the holders l2 may be inserted to mount the holders on the card. An article displayed on the card H), such as a pencil II, is engaged beneath one or more of the cords l3 of the holders I 2.
In Figs. 8 and 9 a modified form of blunt barb elastic holder has been disclosed which distinguishes from the prior form in the fact that each barb M has a lug portion 20 stamped from the sheet metal material thereof. These lug portions 20 may be used to hold end sections of the cord l3 for decreasing the over all size of the holder l2. In Fig. 8 the cord I3 is shown Wound around the body of the barb and engaged beneath the lug portion 20. The holes 18 in the card I0 through which the barb I4 is intended to pass must be of a sufficiently large diameter so that the barbs M with the wound cord thereon. as illustrated in Fig. 8, may pass through.
If it is desired to increase the operative length of the elastic holder I2 it is merely necessary to slip the cord l3 from beneath the lug portions 20 and unwind it. This increases the distance between the barbs M on the ends of the cord l3.
On the other hand, if the holder I2 is used to support an object of a certain size and the elastic stretches from age, or is too long, its operative length may be reduced by winding end portions of the elastic cord I3 upon the body of the barbs I4 and engaging sections of the elastic cord l3 beneath the lug portions 20, as illustrated in Fig. 8.
While I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity, I realize that in practice various alterations therein may be made, and I therefore reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction or otherwise altering the arrangement of the correlated parts Without departing from the spirit or the scope of the appended claims;
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
-l. A blunt barb elastic holder, comprising a short length of elastic cord, a barb mounted on each end of said cord, each barb having a tail section at one end portion and a cylindrical section at the other end portion, said cylindrical section being clamped on to said cord so that the cord extends from the central portion of the barb, and holding elements on said barbs for releasably holding turns of said cord thereon.
2. A blunt barb elastic holder, comprising a short length of elastic cord, a barb mounted on each end of said cord, each barb having a tail section at one end portion and a cylindrical section at the other end portion, said "cylindrical section being clamped on to said cord so that the cord extends from the central portion of the barb, and a lug portion. on said barb, and the cord adjacent said barb being wound around the barb and engaged beneath said lug portion, whereby the cord may be slipped out from beneath said lug portion and unwound for increasing the distance between said barbs along the length of said cord.

A .blunt barb elastic holder, comprising a. short length of elastic cord, a barb mounted on each end of said cord, each barb having a tail section at one end portion and a cylindrical section being clamped on to said cord so that the cord extends from the central portion of the barb, and a lug portion on said barb, and the cord adjacent said barb being wound around the barb and engaged beneath said lug portion, whereby the cord may be slipped out from beneath said lug portion and unwound for increasing the distance between said barbs along the length of said cord, said lug portions being located upon the backs of the barbs.
