It is preferable that tongue and groove members be provided at the back part of th foot and the forward face of the buttress so that the tongue of the one member engages the groove of the other. By this construction the foot is prevented from turning relative to the bracket plate. Such an arrangement permits the bathtub to be shifted longitudinally to one position or another at the time that it is being installed without disturbing the foot positions or placing undue strain upon them.

In the device shown in the drawing there are two buttress members 4, one extending from the upper face of the boss of the bracket plate and the other extending from the lower face. Each is similarly configurated and the device is reversible, that is, it may be mounted at either the left-hand face of a stud, as shown, or flopped over and mounted on the right-hand face with the foot portion extending beyond the forward edge in either case. As shown in the drawing, the faces of the support buttressesare at approximate right angles to the face of the bracket and the platform of the foot support extends in a direction which is approximately at right'angles to but beyond the forward edge of the wall studding.

The modified form of foot shown in Figure 5 is adapted for use in conjunction with bathtubs made of enameled cast iron. Such tubs have a rim which extends in a substantially horizontal direction, and a lip depending from the outer edge of the rim. The modified form of foot has a portion I 9 which slopes away from the platform thereof, in such manner that the lip engages the sloping surface and thereby causes the tub to hug the wall. The platform in this instance is positioned to engage the underneath surface of the rim.

In the utilization of the device, the bracket plate I is fastened to the studding by means of the lag screws 7 at such a height from the floor that the surface of the foot platform is at approximately the proper elevation relative to the rim of the bathtub. The bathtub is then moved into position so that the rim of it lies adjacent the wall studding and extends over the foot support. The nut I6 is then adjusted until the bathtub is elevated to its final position. During this adjustment the lip or tongue rides within the groove and therefore guides the foot as it is being raised or lowered. The nut l8, thereafter, is operated to lock the bolt in position.

Since the rim of the tub is supported from the wall there is no sagging of the tub or separation of the tub from the plaster or tile wall surface of the bathroom. In a typical installation it is usually best to use two hangers for supporting the tub at the lengthwise rim and one hanger at each of the crosswise rims at the ends.

From the foregoing description of the preferred embodiment of the invention it is believed that those skilled in the art readily will understand the various modifications which may be made without departing from the spirit of the present improvement.

Having described my invention, I claim:

1. A bathtub hanger comprising a bracket plate which is adapted to be fastened to a wall stud or the like, a boss extending from the bracket plate, suspension means supported from said boss, a foot member carried by said suspension means, the said foot member terminating at the one side in a support portion and at the other side in an abutment portion, and a buttress connected with said bracket plate, and providing a of a bathtub, support means carried by the bracket plate for suspending the foot member therefrom, and buttress means extending from the bracket plate for engagement with the foot member at the side thereof opposite the platform portion of the foot member, thereby preventing canting of the foot member under a load imposed upon it with complementary tongue and groove means intermediate the buttress member and the foot member for preventing the foot member from being rotated relative to the support means.

3. A hanger for a bathtub, which comprises a bracket member adapted to be secured to a wall stud or the like at the one side, suspension means residing in spaced substantially parallel relationship with the bracket member and carried thereby at the other side, a hanger member extending sidewisely from the suspension means and terminating in a platform portion having a serrated surface adapted for engagement at the underneath portion of the rim of a bathtub, and buttress means for preventing the suspension means from canting under the load imposed upon said platform portion when a bathtub is rested on it.

4. A hanger for a. bathtub, which comprises a bracket member adapted to be secured to a wall stud or the like at the one side, suspension means residing in spaced substantially parallel relationship with the bracket member and carried thereby at the other side, and a foot member extending sidewisely relative to the bracket member and terminating in a platform portion having a serrated surface adapted for engagement at the underneath portion of the rim of a bathtub, the said platform portion being inclined with respect to the suspension means, so that when the suspension means resides in a substantially vertical plane the platform portion is positioned to fit the contour of the underneath portion of the rim of a bathtub.

5. A device for suspending a bathtub from a wall stud or the like, which comprises a bracket plate adapted to be fastened to a face of a wall stud, a boss extending from the bracket plate opposite the stud engaging face, the boss having a bore therein, a bolt extending through said bore and carrying a nut for engagement with said .boss, said bolt, at the end opposite the nut, carrying a support member providing a foot portion adapted for engagement with the rim of a bathtub, and a buttress extending from said boss and positioned to engage said support member at a point opposite the foot portion thereof.

A device for suspending a bathtub from a wall stud or the like, which comprises a bracket plate adapted to be fastened to a face of a wall stud, a boss extending from the bracket plate opposite the stud engaging face, the boss having a bore therein, a bolt extending through said bor and carrying a nut for engagement with said boss, said bolt, at the end opposite the nut, carrying a support member providing a foot portion adapted for engagement with the rim of a bathtub, a buttress extending from said boss and positioned to engage said support member at a point opposite the foot portion thereof, and another buttress member extending from the boss at the side opposite the said support member and being similar to the first buttress member for enabling the device to be mounted reversibly upon either face of a wall stud.

'7. A devic for suspending a bathtub from a wall stud or the like, which comprises a bracket adapted to be fastened to a wall stud and providing a boss extending therefrom, adjustable suspension means carried by said boss, a support member terminating in a platform portion carried by said suspension means, and a buttress member extending from said boss in opposite directions and providing faces extending substantially parallel with said suspension means, the abutment member adjacent the said support member being adapted to engage the support member and prevent lateral movement of it, and the face of the buttress member on the other side of the boss being similarly disposed, whereby the bracket may be reversibly mounted upon either face of a wall stud.

8. A device of the class described, comprising a bracket plate adapted to be mounted to the face of a wall stud or the like, a support member extending outwardly from the bracket plate, a buttress member extending from the support member and providing an abutment surface disposed laterally relative to the bracket plate, and a footed hanger adapted for engagement with the rim of a bathtub carried by said support member and having a portion engaging abutment surface of said buttress means.

9. A device of th class described, comprising a bracket plate adapted to be mounted to the face of a wall stud or the like, a support member extending outwardly from the bracket plate, a buttress member extending outwardly from the bracket plate and providing an abutment surface residing laterally with respect thereto, and a footed hanger member adapted to support a bathtub, dependingly carried by said support member, the abutment surface of the buttress member having a longitudinal groove therein and the said hanger member having a tongue positioned for slidable engagement with said groove.

10. A device of the class described, comprising a bracket adapted to be fastened to the face of a wall stud or the like and providing a boss extending outwardly therefrom, the said boss having a bore therein, a suspension bolt passing through said bore and carrying a nut for engagement with the boss, a foot member carried by said bolt, the foot portion terminating in a platform adapted for engagement with the rim of a bathtub, and a buttress member extending laterally from the boss in a direction substantially parallel with said bolt at the side of the foot member beyond the platform, the buttress member being adapted to support the foot member against lateral displacement when the weight of the bathtub is rested upon the platform.

11. A hanger device of the class described comprising a bracket element adapted to be fastened to a wall, means extending outwardly from the bracket element, providing an abutment surface which is disposed laterally with respect to the bracket element, a foot element having a portion adapted to engage the rim of a bathtub, and another portion adapted to engage the said abutment surface, and means for supporting the foot element from the bracket plate.
