Description

11. DUNSGOMB.
Box.
Patented April 13,1880.
IINVENTOR:
TTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL DUNSOOMB, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 226,502, dated April 13, 1880. Application filed February 21, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL DUNsooMB, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a box and the cover in perspective. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional elevation of box and cover. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cap.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved cover designed especially for dredging-boxes or for boxes intended to hold powders of any kind.
The invention consists in a cover, preferably metallic, having a central aperture, and of a perforated metallic cap having a downwardprojecting notched elastic rim, which cap is removably fitted into the aperture of the cover.
In the drawings, A represents the cover, provided with an aperture, a. B is the cap, having perforations b b, and provided with a downward-projecting rim, 0, which rim 0 is notched, as shown at cl (1, so that it may have sufficient elasticity to be pressed into the aperture a of the cover A, and to then expand or spring out again and hold in position with sufficient firmness to resist accidental displacement.
The contents of the box 0, to which the cover A is applied, may be discharged through the perforations b b, or said contents may be discharged through the aperture to of the cover A, on removing the cap B, by means of the fingers or other convenient appliance, the said cap B being sufficiently raised above the otherwise level surface of cover A to admit of its easy removal. When this cover A is applied to a box designed for the transportation of powders a coating of shellac mixed with some pigment, or a covering of paper or woven fabric, is secured over the cap B to prevent the escape of the powder through the perforations b b, and when it is desired to remove said powder from the box the covering of the cap B may be punctured over the perforations b I); or the cap B may be entirely removed, as set forth.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a box, a cover constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of the coverA, provided with an aperture, 0, and cap B, having perforations b b, and provided with a down\vard-projectin g notched rim, 0, as set forth.
