Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH M. L. GARDNER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CUSPADORES.
S ecification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,439, dated December 19, 1876 application filed May 24, 1876.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH M. L. GARDNER, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ouspadores and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom panying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvemente in the construction of cuspadores, the object of which is to facilitate the operation of cleansing the same, and also to lessen their liability to be broken.
The accompanying drawing fully illustrates the nature and character of my improvements, it being a vertical cross-section of aspittoon or cuspadore constructed in accordance with the principle embodied in my invention, similar letters indicating corresponding parts wherever they occur.
My invention consists in constructing a cuspadore in two parts, A and B, combined and arranged as shown, the former constituting the inner receptacle or body of the spittoon, and the latter an outer covering, and a protection therefor, susceptible of being removed and adjusted at pleasure, or whenever it is necessary so to do. The inner receptacle A, when the outer shell is removed, being entirely open at the top, presents no obstruction to its being easily, speedily, and thoroughly cleansed, as will be obvious.
By thus constructing a cuspadore in two parts, as above set forth and shown, I am enaprotected by the outer covering or shell B, which may be made of sheet metal, guttapercha, or other appropriate material, and is provided with suitable spring or catches a, so arranged as to engage with the body A, for the purpose of preventing its accidental removal or displacement, but not so as to resist a slight pressure when necessary to separate the parts. A slight recess, b, is made in the side of said body, in which the ends of said springs orcatches fit, all substantially as shown and indicated. Said body A is also provided with an annular groove, 0, on the inside at the bottom, to receive the ends of a tripod, which may serve as a handle and device to lift it by when necessary to cleanse it.
It will bcobserved that there is no hinge employed to couple the parts together, and no necessity for one, and, the bottom being broad, it will not be liable to overturn.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. A cuspadore consisting of an inner receptacie, A, and an outer protecting-casing, B, connected to and entirely detachable from the inner receptacle, as set forth.
2. The receptacle A, open at the top, combined with the casing B, having a depressed top and central opening, and provided with springs a, as set forth.
3. The receptacle A, provided with recesses c c, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH M. L. GARDNER.
