Description
I. W. BIRDSEYE.
Corset.
N 226,268. Patented April 6,1880.
N. PETERS PHOTD-UTHOGRAFHER. WASHINGTON D C,
' IJNrrED STATES ISAAC \V. BIRDSEYE, OF BIRMINGHAM, CONNECTICUT.
CORSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,268, dated April 6, 1880,
Application filed February 14, 1880 To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ISAAC \V. BIRDSEYE, of Birmingham, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new improvement in Corsets; and I do hereby de clare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the let ters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents a perspective view.
Thisinvention relates to an improvement in corsets, the object being to prevent wrinkling or breaking at the hips and insure an easy and comfortable fit of that part of the corset and the invention consists in the construction, as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claim.
A represents the front or breast section; B, the rear section, and C C the hip-sections. At the bottom the hip section is cut away at near its forward edge, up over the hip, and near to the rear edge of the hip-section, then over this section from under the arm a staypiece, D, extends downward and centrally over the opening or cutaway portion. E to the line of the lower edge of the corset. At the lower end the stay-piece D is connected to the rear by an elastic piece, F, and to the front by a similar piece, G, as shown.
This construction takes away that portion of the corset over the hip which is liable to wrinkle, but provides firm hip-stay and elastic lower edge, which readily yields to the movement of the body and retains its position.
I do not wish to be understood as broadly claiming the introduction of elastic material or stays at the lower edge of the corset, or, broadly, cutting away a portion of the hipsectiou, as such, I am aware, are not new; but
What I do claim is In a corset, the hipsection, cut away at its lower end, combined with the hip-stay D, extending from under the arm down over the cut-away portion, and connected to the front and rear edges in said out-away portion by elastic piece F G, substantially as described.
ISAAC W. BIRDSEYE.
