This invention relates to broom sewing machines or the like, and more particularly to a device of this character which is provided with a work carrier adapted to receive a broom at an initial idle position and to be shifted to an operative position in proximity to the sewing apparatus. The general object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device for facilitating the shifting of the work carrier.
In machines widely in use at the present time, the main frame of the apparatus encloses a space within which the broom to be sewed is adapted to move, and suitable stitching mechanism is provided upon either side of this space to bind the broom straw firmly together as the broom is fed past this mechanism by a gradual movement of the carrier. The carrier in such a machine is pivotally mounted upon a lower or intermediate portion of the main frame and includes a vise for firmly clamping the partly completed broom during the sewing operation. In its initial idle position the vise projects outwardly from the general connues of the main frame and clear of the needles, loopers, and
other parts of the stitching mechanism; and after the broom is clamped in the vise, the carrier is grasped by hand at any convenient portion thereof and shoved by main force into position between the stitching devices for effecting the sewing operation.
In these machines, means are usually provided for starting the power operated sewing mechanism automatically upon throwing in the vise, and at the same time initiating the gradual feed of the carrier outwardly during the sewing operation. Means are also generally provided for automatically springing the jaws of the vise open at the end of the outward feed of the carrier after the stitching has been completed.
VThe present invention contemplates the provision of foot operated means for throwing in the work carrier or vise; and in its preferred embodiment a foot lever is culcrumed upon a stationary part of the main frame, preferably at a point below the horizontal pivot of the carrier, and is operatively connected with the carrier or of its trunnions by means of a chain and grooved pulley segment, whereby upon apr plying pressure to the lever, the carrier frame vise will be rocked into starting position.

Inl the drawings, wherein isv more or` less diagrammatically illustrated a l-broom sewing machine incorporating the novel throw-inV mechanism forming the subject ofthe present invention, the main frame vof the machine is desighated generally by thereference numeral i9, as best seen in Figures 1 and 5. Projecting from the front of the main frame lil-are a pair'of brackets ll which are provided withbearings i2 within which are adapted to rotate v the trunnion shafts i3 and ld which serve to pivotally support the work carrierdesignated generally by the numeral IS-with respect tothe frame. Both of the trunnion shafts I3 and I4 vare rigidly received within the cylindrical bosses Il and I8 of the frame of the work carrierv l5.
The work carrier l5 comprises essentially the vise jaws 2B and ,2l between which a broom is adapted to be gripped forystitching. The carrier assembly also includes numerous other elements pertaining to the operation of the jaws, the vertical adjustment of thek work, and ,certainv other mechanism, only a portion of `,which is necessary to an understanding of the present invention. and thus only such portions will be described in the present specification.
Before entering into a description of the mechanism comprised in the carrier, the general movements of the Carlier lwill be explained. The carrier is shown in full lines in Figures 1 and l3 of the drawings in an intermediate position in which the sewing operation has progressed about half way. Secured to the main frame IB as by means of a bracket23 isa portion of the sewing mechanism indicatedf diagrammatically at 25. A corresponding oppositely disposed sewing device 25 is shown in Figure 3, and it is obvious that the carrier with a broom clamped in its vise is adapted to move between the sewing mechanisms 25 and 25 during the operation of the machine. Each of the sewing assemblies are of conventional construction and may include thread loopers 26 and 2'6, through which hooked needles (not shown) are adapted to move in order to transfer the thread through the broom from one side to the other to form the binding stitches.
The initial idle position of the carrier I5 in which it projects outwardly of the sewing mechanism, in readiness to receive a broom, is indicated by dotted lines and is designated by the reference character A. The center line of the mechanism, While in this position, is shown at a. and of course passes through the axis of the trunnion shafts I3 and I4. The position in which the carrier is disposed when it is thrown in to start the sewing operation is indicated by the broken lines at B, and the center line of the device when in this position is shown at b. The intermediate position shown in solid lines may be conveniently designated C.
The movement of the carrier from the position designated B to position A is effected gradually or in a step-by-step manner while the broom is being sewed, and the throwing in of the device from position A to position B is effected by novel means which will now be described. Rigidly secured to one of the trunnionsthe one designated 4 in the embodiment shown in Figure 5-is a sleeve 28 which carries -a pulley segment 38, the segment being grooved as at 3| and having secured at one end thereof as at 32 a chain or other flexible arrangement 33. The upper portion of the chain 33 lies in the groove 3| and its lower end is secured to a link 34 pivotally connected to a foot lever or pedal 35, as at 38. The
pedal 35 is pivotally mounted as at 31 to a bracket 38 secured to the lower portion of the main frame l0. It will be readily perceived that upon depressing the pedal 35 the segment 3U will be rocked about the axis of the trunnions in a clockwise direction as viewed in Figure 1. This of course will rock the entire work carrier l5, together with all of its associated mechanism, from position A to position B for initiating the operation of the machine.
From the position indicated at B the carrier is moved during the sewing operation outwardly of the main frame I back to position A. For purposes of concise illustration, a device of relatively simple construction for feeding the carrier is shown and described herein, but it is understood that this exemplary embodiment does not represent the most modern and improved construction, and furthermore that any desired practical type of step-by-Step feeding mechanism may be employed in the present invention without departing from the scope thereof as defined by the appended claims. Suitably secured to the carrier as by means of a bracket 40 is a bar 42, the remote end of which extends through a depending box-like portion of the main frame designated 43. Extending in parallel relation with the bar 42 and also passing through the box frame 43 is the bar 45, the outer end 45 of which is normally spaced from the abutment 41 carried by the rod 48 which is adjustably secured as at 49 to the upper portion of the bracket 40. The rod 48 is threaded through this bracket portion and is manipulated by the knob 5l) and secured in adjusted position as by means of the lock nut 5|.
Abell crank lever 54 is fulcrurned as at 55 to a downwardly projecting lug on the bar 42 and has its upper end pivotally connected as at 56 to a projection 5'| secured to the bar 45. The other end of the lever 54 is provided with a roller 58 for contact with the rising and falling plate 60, this plate 6|! being provided witha cam roller 6| for contacting with an operating cam (not shown), by which it is vertically reciprocated during the operation of the machine. The bell crank lever 54 is biased in a clockwise direction as seen in Figure 3 by means of the spring element 62 secured at its respective ends to a pin 64 on the lever 54 .and a pin 65 on the bracket 4|).
The right hand end 46 of the bar 45 has a downwardly projecting portion through which a set screw 68 is threaded and adapted to be secured by means of the lock nut 69. The end of the set screw is adapted to abut a projection 10 extending upwardly from the bar 42.
Within the box-like frame portion 43 there are pivoted, above the respective bars 42 and 45, the upper ends of the levers I2 and 15. The lower portions of these levers carry rollers 11 and 'I8 which are adapted to be intermittently and alternately moved by cams rotated by the main drive of the machine. Each of the bars 42 and l5 within the box 43 is provided with a clamping jaw such as illustrated at 8|) in Figure 4. The jaws 8|) are periodically clamped upon the respective bars 42 and 45 by pressure of pins or bolts 82 carried by the cam levers 12 and 15.
During the operation of the machine, the bars 42 and 45 are alternately clamped and released. When the bar is released it is drawn by means of the spring 62 against the adjustable stop 4l. By adjusting the stop 4'| any desired amount of relative movement between the rods 42 and 45 may be attained, and this regulation of the stepby-step movement of the feed will determine the length of the stitches effected by the sewing mechanism during the movement of the work carrier therebetween. Next, when the rod 45 is clamped by the appropriate motion of its cam bar l5, and the bar 42 released by the opposite movement of its lever l2, the work carrier 5 is moved forwardly by means of the vertically oscillating plate or rail 6!) which rocks the lever 54 through Contact with the roller 58. The adjustable stop 68, 'I0 prevents excessive movement of the vise during this forward step. This positive gradual step-by-step feed of the work carrier is cont-inued until the carrier reaches the initial position A.
Upon completion of the sewing of a broom, it is removed from the carrier, a new broom inserted, clamped in vise, and the carrier is again thrown into operative position by depression of the treadle 35.
As best seen in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, tlie jaws 2i) and 2| are clamped upon the work by means of the following mechanism. Pivoted as at 85 to a relatively stationary portion of the carrier I5, upon either side thereof, are the levers 85. These levers are provided with inwardly turned end portions which are provided with openings through which the horizontal bar 88 extends. At the ends of the levers 86 are pivotally connected the links 89 which are in turn pivotally secured to the jaw 20 as at 90. At other points along the levers 85 upon the opposite side of the fulcrum 85 are pivoted the links 92, which are also pivotally connected as at 93 with the jaw 2|. Through suitable connections, including preferably a turnbuckle 95,
the rod 96, the offset link 38, and the bell crank 99, the levers 86 are connected for operation to the bifurcated foot lever or treadle |00, which is pivoted on a stationary fulcrum supported by the main frame. The bell crank 99 is fulcrumed as at I0| between and to the arms of the lever |00 and has a downward extension |02 'which is pivotally connected to one end of a horizontal lever |04 which is pivoted at an intermediate point |05 to a relatively stationary portion of the carrier I5. 'Ihe forward end of the lever |04 pivotally carries as at |05 the locking lever |08. This lever is biased in a counterclockwise direction by means of the spring |09. The lever |08 is provided with a series of teeth |I0 which are adapted to be engaged by a dog I|2 carried by the treadle |00. The lower end of the lever |08 is provided with the spring pressed dog II5 adapted under certain circumstances to abut the projection IIS carried by a bracket II'I secured to the lower part of the main frame I0. These connections are substantially the same as those shown in the patent to Oyler and Parker 1,071,332 and reference to that patent is made for further disclosure of the details of the machine not directly concerned with the present improvement.
The operation of the vise actuating means will be readily apparent. In order to clamp the jaws 20 and 2| upon a broom the treadle |00 is depressed which, through the elements 99, 08, 06, S5, and 8B, will rock the levers 05 in a clockwise direction as seen in Figure 2. This movement, through the links 89 and 02, will move the jaws 20 and 2| toward each other and clamp the broom. Arrangement is made for clamping brooms of differing thicknesses, and thus the downward movement of the treadle |00 will continue until the dog IIZ engages the proper tooth IIO on the lever |08, the spring |09 urging the lever |08 toward dog engaging position. After depressing the treadle |00 and properly clamping the broom, the pedal 35 is actuated in order to throw the entire work carrier device I5 into operative position.
The vise jaws 20 and 2| are adapted to be automatically opened upon -completion of the sewing operation by the contact of the dog II5 with the abutment I|6, whereupon vthe lever |08 is rocked in a clockwise direction and the tooth I|0 is released from the dog I I2. A spring |20 connected between a pin |2| on one of the vise jaws and a point |22 on the foot lever |00 exerts a lifting force on the lever and, when the latching lever |08 is released, the foot lever is raised and the vise is opened.
Various changes and modications may be made in the embodiments illustrated and described herein without Ideparting from the scope of the invention as defined by the following claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
In a broom sewing machine of the class described, in combination, a main frame, sewing mechanism thereon, a. broom carrier frame provided with trunnions supported in fixed bearings carried by said main frame for limited swinging movement from an initial idle 4position for the insertion of a broom to be sewed, to an operative position with respect to said sewing mechanism,from which latter position the 'carrier frame may be fed back to the initial position during the sewing operation, means for swinging said carrier frame from said initial idle position to said 0perative position comprising a pedal fulcrumed on said frame at a point below the trunnion mounting of said carrier, a peripherally grooved pulley segment xed upon one of the trunnions of said carrier, -a chain secured to said segment, trained through said groove, and connected with said pedal, whereby the depression of said pedal causes the trunnion to rock and the carrier fr-ame to swing into operative position.
