2 Claims.
This invention pertains to certain speciilc improvements in flame hardening torches with relation to controlling the flame jets from which issue the oxyacetylene flame for flame hardening the surfaces of work pieces. Particularly, this invention pertains to a novel construction of a flame hardening adapted by simple adjustment to controlling the number or flame jets which may be rendered operative for flame hardening purposes.

In order to provide proper distribution of the combustible fuel and to prevent the chamber I! from igniting the combustible fuel at times when the burner is turned oif or being initially lighted, a flash back checking device comprising the tubular member I having a central bore l5 connected to the chamber H in the adjusting member 6 and being connected through radially extending ports it which permit the fuel to pass into the chamber II but prevents flame from burning back from the ports it into the chamber H and the remainingpassageways I, I, and 3 of the torc which might result in damage due to the combustion and explosive burning of these mixtures in these passageways.

In the torch body I, are formed the flame jets I! which are appropriately arranged in predetermined relation to the ports I! in the adjusting member I, so that as the adjust-1B8 member is rotated, various sets of jets I! may be connected through the ports II with the chamber l2, so that any selection of flame jets may be had from a 6. In this way, the burner is arranged to most eiflciently be easily and rapidly adapted to any width of work piece to be flame hardened without loss of gas where the work was narrower than set of jets of the burner. Thus fuel economy is greatly improved and alsothe more eiflcient application 01' the flame to the specific type of work piece to be flame hardened is thereby accomplished.
The member 6 is provided with an integral threaded portion 20 upon which-is threaded the nut 2| having abutment shoulders 2la and 2) respectively engaging the surface In of the torch body i and the surface 22a, of the dial indicating collar 22 fixed on the surface Id of the torch body I by appropriate screws 22a. Also on the projecting outer end of the adjusting member 6 is provided the squared end portion 6a, to which may be applied a suitable wrench for rotating the member- 6 to the desired position. Also fixed to rotate with the member -6 is the indicating pointer 23 which travels over the dial indicating graduations 2| formed on the collar 22 in such a way that rotation of the member 6 to predetermined selected positions may be directly efl'ected by noting the relative position of the pointer 23 with regard to the graduations 24. These graduations 24 are marked with numerals indicating the number of jets I! brought into operative condition. The arrangement just described greatly facilitates the manipulation of the adjustment of the torch to bringthe .various desired numbers of flame jets I! into operation.
In the event the plunger 6 should become tightlyengaged or stuck-in the bore 5, the nut 2| may be rotated by applying the usual spanner wrench in the spanner wrench holes 2lc and rotated so as to cause its abutment surface 2la to bear against the surface in of the torch body I so as to dislodge its taper surface 1 from the bore making it easy to turn to the desired se-' lected position by rotating the member 6 by application of a wrench on the squared end portion minimum, which in this particular ports Ila and be in alignment with the the flame Jets l9, and so that required of the full making a gas tight connection between the tieriphery 1 thereof and the tapered bore 5 in the burner I.
Coolant medium for with the flame hardening jets I9 is delivered through the annular slot 25 which is connected through the dual passageways 26 to the longitudinally extending coolant passageway 21 from which issue the coolant jets 28 for applying the coolant medium to the work immediately following the passage of the flame jets l9 over the work.
Thus in this combination of an adjustable flame hardening torch is provided 'a means whereby a torch may be provided with a plurality of flame jets and means whereby one or more or all of these jets may be quickly put into operation or cut out of operation by the simple manipulation of a control device associated with which is a dial indicating device for directly reading the condition desired of the burner.
Having thus fully set forth and described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. In a gas burner, a body, a tapered bore in said body, flame orifices in said body opening into said bore, a rotatable tapered adjusting member bore, means for rotating said adjusting member toselected positions, means for withdrawing said adjusting member from engagement with said bore when rotating said adsaid body, flame orifices in said body opening into said bore, a rotatable tapered adjusting sleeve mounted in said bore, means for withdrawing or flrmly engaging said sleeve in said bore comprisin. After thus selecting the desired number of flame jets iii to be put into operation by rotating the member ,6 and noting the position of the pointer 22, the nut 2| is then rotated in opposite direction causing its abutment surface 2|c to engage against the abutment surface 22a of the dial indicating collar 22 and again flrmlylodge the member 6 in the bore 5 of the torch body i ing a nut threaded around a concentric stem portion at one end of said sleeve, means on said body engaging the faces of said nut adjacent its periphery to restrict its axial motion relative to said body, and means on said nut whereby it may be rotated'in said body to axially adjust said sleeve'longitudinally of said tapered body, a fuel chamber in said sleeve, radially extending ports in said sleeve opening into said chamber and adapted to be brought into selective ALBERT L.
