BLOWTORCH Filed NOV. 14, 1947 v 2 SHEETS-SHEET l ATTD RN EYE Patented Dec. 23, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BLOWTORGH Fred Hinton, Modesto, Calif.
Application November 14, 1947, Serial No. 785,927
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to an attachment for a ninety degree burning torch whereby the torch can be quickly converted to burn circles of various sizes. a
An object of the invention is to provide a device of this character that will permit a quick conversion of the torch without the necessity of cutting oii the acetylene and oxygen valves at the torches.
The old type of circle burners required the complete change of burner units which necessitated cutting 01f the valves and then disconnecting the burner from the supply lines.
The type of burner attachment constructed in accordance with the invention eliminates these disadvantages, and saves time in the conversion of the burners involved.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists of the novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view partly in section of an embodiment of theinvention as connected to a ninety degree burner;
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 and Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal section through the adapter, head carried by the tubes and head illustrating the connecting passages through the parts and with the parts shown on an enlarged scale.
Figure 5 is a cross section taken on line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a View similar to that shown in Figure 4 showing the burner tip positioned in the head carried by the tubes.
Figure 7 is a view also similar to that shown in Figure i showing the adapter with the parts thereof separated and connected by dot and dash lines.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the reference numeral ii! designates a ninety degree burner. The burner it comprises the hand con trol valve II, which is connected to the supply tanks of acetylene and oxygen, and is controlled by the control lever l2.
The valve H is connected to the pipes 13 and Hi respectively, which conduct the acetylene and oxygen from the valve H to the manifold or mixing head I5.
Under ordinary circumstances, the tip It would be cemented to the manifold [5, but to connect the burner to a circle burner, the attachment or adapter I! embodying the invention is connected to the manifold I5.
This adapter has the conical end or shank is similar in all respects to the conical end or shank (8' of the tip l6, and this tip is provided with openings l9 as is the end It provided with openings 19'. The shoulder or collar 28 on the end l8 seats on a corresponding shoulder in the head I5 and prevents mixing of the two gases within the manifold [5 in a manner similar to the functioning of the shoulder 20 on the tip it. The threaded end 2| of the adapter is similar to the threaded portion 21 of the tip it. Thus when the adapter I! is connected to the manifold l5, the same construction is encountered as if the tip it were connected to the manifold 15. The nut 22 on the adapter provides means for turning the adapter by a wrench or the like for threading the adapter or the attachment to the manifold IS in the same manner as the nut 22' is used, as will be later described.
The attachment comprises the tubular portion 23 having ducts or passages l9 which extend from the opening lid in the inner end of the head I 5 to an annular channel 2 in the collar 25 of the adapter and the channel 2 is connected to an opening 43 in the inner end of the manifold 21 by a tube 24. The adapter is also provided with a center passage 3, the inner end of which is provided with openings i that extend into an annular channel 5 to provide communicating means between the center passage 3 and the tube it. The gasses are thus still separated at the time they enter the manifold or mixing head 21 of the attachment into which the tip it is inserted. The tip i6 is also provided with a center passage 6, the inner end of which is provided with openings 7 that extend into a channel 8 that connects the passage 6 to the tube 25. The nut 22 provides means for turning the tip 16 for screwing the tip in place in the manifold 21 in the same manner as the nut 22 secures the adapter to the manifold l5.
The manifold 21 is provided adjacent its outer end with an annular recess 28 in which is seated the collar 29. Secured at right angles to the collar 29 is an arm 83 on which is slidably mounted the block 3|. The block 3i carries a set screw 32, whereby the block is fixed to the arm 3d, and a supporting leg or pin 33 which supports the outer end of the arm 38.
It will be seen in Figure 2 that the tip l8 carrice the mixing openings 34 that are conventional with tips of this construction.
In use, when it is desired to cut a circle, the
tip I 6 is connected to the attachment I1, and the attachment I1 is connected to the manifold [5. This does not interfere with the flow of the gasses, since such gasses are cut off at the valve H. The leg 33, which is pointed at 35 at its free end, is positioned at the center of the circle to be cut. The tip is set a distance from the leg 33, equal to the radius of the circle to be cut. The reversal of the operation can be used also, where the tip is set at the periphery of the circle, and the block is slid on the arm 30 until the leg is located at the center of the circle. The set screw 32 is tightened, and the burner is ready for operation.
Rotating the burner on the axis formed by the leg 33 will cut the circle desired.
There has thus been provided an attachment which will convert a ninety degree burner into a circle cutting burner. Such conversion is rapidly and easily made without interfering with the flow of gasses to the burner.
It is believed that from the foregoing description, the construction and operation of the device will be apparent to those skilled in the art, and it is to be understood that changes in the minor details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts can be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
In a blow torch having acetylene and oxygen tubes extending from a control valve, a hollow tapering cylindrical shaped head carried by the tubes with the tubes entering one side of the head at spaced points and with the head tapering outwardly away from the tubes, said head having an annular shoulder therein positioned between the said spaced points where the tubes are connected to the side of the head and the outer larger end thereof being internally threaded, an adapter having a shank with openings in the end, an annular collar spaced from the end and positioned to seat on the annular shoulder of the head and a threaded section corresponding with the internally threaded end of the head, said threaded section of the adapter being spaced from a collar providing an annular recess and the shank of the adapter having an opening therein extended from the recess into the interior of the shank, said adapter also having hollow cylindrical shaped head on the end of the shank opposite to the end positioned in the tapering cylindrical shaped head carried by the tubes and positioned with the longitudinal axis of the adapter head perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the shank of the adapter, saidadapterhead having spaced openings in one side thereof with one of said openings communicating with the openings in the end of the shank and the other communicating with the opening that extends from the interior of the shank to the annular recess between the collar and threads on the outer surface thereof, said adapter head having an annular shoulder therein positioned between said spaced openings, "and the end of the adapter head extended from the end having the spaced openings therein having internal threads corresponding with the threads of the head carried by the tubes from the control valve, and a burner tip having .a shank with a center passage therein and with radially positioned passages extended therethrough and having an annular collar on the outer surface and spaced from one end whereby with the tip positioned in the head of the adapter the annular collar seats against the shoulder in the head of the adapter wherein said radially positioned passages extended through the burner tip shank are in communication with the openings extended through the shank of the adapter, said shank of the burner tip also having an opening extended from the center passage to thc opening communicating with the center passage of the shank of the adapter, the shank of said burner tip also having threads thereon corresponding with the internal threads of the adapter head and also of the head carried by the tubes.
