Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VINCENT D. l?. J. SLA'ITERY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COAL-CART..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,726, dated March 23, 1880. Application led February 4, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VINCENT D. l?. J. SLA'L- TERY, of New York, in the county ot' New York, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Goal-Cart Attachments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an end-gate and chute for coal and other carts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is aperspective view of a cart embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 shows an auxiliary gate in the end-gate.
A represents the body of a cart, such as is commonly used for hauling and delivering coal and other articles, said body being mounted on an axle, B, with wheels C C.
D represents the end-gate of the cart, provided with hooks a a at the top, one near each side, said hooks taking into eyes b b, formed upon the ends of metal straps or bars E E, which are secured to the sides of the body A, so that the end-gate can be easily swung outward or removed altogether, as desired.
When the end-gate D is closed it is held in place by a hook, f, on each side, as shown.
In the lower portion of the end-gate Dis an opening of suitable size for discharging the contents of the cart without opening or disengaging the entire end-gate, and this opening is closed by an auxiliary gate or slide, F,
moving in suitable guides e, attached to the inner side of the end-gate. This auxiliary gate or slide F is provided with a handle or stem, G, having two holes, fr one near the upper and the other near the ,lower end, as shown in Fig. 3. These holes are for the purpose of receiving a split pin, h, which passes through an eye, I, on top of the main gate D, for holding the auxiliary gate or slide F either closed or open.
L is a chute of substantially the curved form shown, provided with a series of hooks, m, to fasten in eyes a on the outside of the end-gate D, so that the upper end of the chute will cover or inclose the opening in the end gate.
The chute L is to be carried on top of the load, and when the cart is backed up for unloading the chute is put on, and then the slide F opened, when the contents of the cart can be easily discharged through the chute.
I am aware that a chute for dumping-carts has been used before; and I do not claim such, broadly, as my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention,
l what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a dumping-wagon, the combination of a hinged end-gate, D, provided with an adjustable slide, F, and a removable chute, L, the several part-s being constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of January, 1880.
