Description

J. A. GRISWOLD. Handling Barrels.
No. 224,527. Patented Feb. 17, 1880;
N. PETERS. PHDTO-LHHOGRAFHER, WASHINGTON D C.
, UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. GRISWOLD, OF PORTLAND, MICHIGAN.
HANDLING BARRELS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 224,527, dated February 17, 1880.
Application filed December 13, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that 1, JOHN A. GRISWOLD, of Portland, Ionia county, Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Devices for Handling Barrels, of which the followingis a specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of devices particularly designed for swinging barrels under counters or shelves; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the various parts, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is across-section, showing the barrel swung under the counter, and in dotted lines when swung out. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the adjustable clamping device. Fig. 3 shows the barrel resting on the shoulder b.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents the counter or shelf, and B the floor, to which is rigidly secured the pedestal G, which terminates in a point, a, and shoulder b; Immediately over this pedestal, and secured to the under side of the shelf or counter top, is a circular stud, D.
E is an adjustableclamping device, slotted as shown, which slips over the edge of the barrel, and is secured to place by a thumbscrew, 0. On the top of this clamping device E is a semicircular bearing-plate, F, its center being eccentric to the center of the part E.
1 In practice, a barrel is placed with one end near the chine upon -the point a, and the clamping device is secured to the opposite end, directly over the lower point, and is so adjusted that when the barrel is raised to a vertical position the bearing-plate F will rest against the circular stud, the weight of the barrel and contents keeping the parts so ongaged, which eccentrically pivots the barrel, so that it can be readily swung under or from under the shelf or counter. Should the barrel be sufficiently heavy to cause the point a to pass through the head the barrel will then rest upon the shoulder b of the pedestal, as shown in Fig. 3.
What I claim as my invention is 1. An adjustable clamping device for bolding and turning barrels, consisting of the slotted part E and set=screw 0, having a semicircular bearing, F, secured to its upper end, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with the clamping device E, constructed substantially as described, and the circular stud D, the pedestal 0, provided with the point a and shoulder b, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
JOHN A. GRISWOLD.
